July Birding in Maine is TOUGH!

Maine is jam-packed with summer songbirds. But they don't make it easy for you. By late July, most have stopped singing. Many are done raising kids. Now they're just enjoying a relaxing day in the Maine woods. They've stopped telling you where they are. July is HARD!

Visited Orono Bog on my only trip to Maine in 2013. Fun place for species not seen in western NC in July. Thanks for the birds, Bob.

True confession: I did this at Bangor City Forest and Orono Bog because I already knew where all the birds were. The challenge was getting them to pose for video, when they really didn't care.

They're not trying to make it hard. They just stopped caring about making it easy. In about four weeks, it will start to get easy again, as they form mixed flocks, fattening up for migration. The seasonal rhythms are fascinating.

Yes, it's a sickness. A bit of new gear almost every time. Added a new microphone in the middle of this one, and picked up a new gimbal camera for the non-zoom stuff a month ago. My wife is beginning to question my sanity.

Yes, I'd try the Nubble Light at Sohier Park in York, Marginal Way in Ogunquit, Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve at Laudholm Farm in Wells, and/or Biddeford Pool. They can all be fun in late summer...or really any time of year.
