Record breaking heat wave. Will my gouldian finches still breed for me?

Hey Chris, Randall here, in southern Ohio. I am a small red canary breeder. I didn't have a good year (only 7 babies out of 9 pair.) I had a health problem that made me very late into my breeding season. Next year will be better. You might try hanging a wet rag in front of your fan. That's called a swamp cooler. It works by cooling a little bit by the process of evaporation. I used this method.. not as good as regular aircondioning but every degree that you can lower, is a good thing.. I have not heard of any canary breeders doing this, but it absolutely works. I trained my first pair to drink from a hamster bottle. Now ALL 25 of my canaries are bottle babies. It is always clean and far easier than washing poopy water dishe clean. Every few months i clean with warm soapy water. I don't use red color , calcium or meds in these water bottles

Hi :) If I may....A lot of smaller birds, like zebrafinches tend to prefer the wicker baskets. I think the reason is that it allows the birds more ventilation and they can see a lot more of the world outside. However, my Gouldian finches have got their toenails caught in them. So far I haven't had any accidents, but I know Chris had birds loose toes or worse. Just my 2 cents

Sherri, thanks for the comment. Truthfully I do t like the wicker baskets as I have had several birds get their toes stuck one them or worse. But I do have some birds that will not nest in The boxes that I have and will only nest in the wicker baskets.

My first nest of gouldians tossed their babies for 2022. Previously, I let the gouldians build their own nest. but I'm wondering if that leads to baby tossing since they are caring too much for the nest. I'm trying only adding nesting material in the nest box to see if they less attached to the nest and it reduces baby tossing.

Could be young parents not experience yet. Also in the future if they go again, during the hatching time, sit and watch who is tossing the chicks out.

@@changcoua08 They are young and they toss their babies at different times throughout the day. My thought is the parents are in charge of building and maintaining the nest. When the baby hatches and they view that it should not be in the nest so it is removed. If I remove the nest building and maintain the nest maybe they won't toss the chick when they find it n the nest. Someone probably thought of it before.

@@twin2482 A trick the works also if only 1 parent is tossing the chick remove that parent for a few days so the chicks are able to get big than add them back in. Usually helps. I keep the remove parent close by so they can still see.

@@birdnerd That's cool they are a beautiful bird but can be quite territorial when breeding. The male does a really neat dance jumping up and down in front of the female...makes a buzzing sound. Hope you have luck with them. I bred a pair many years ago and was quite successful. They need quite a bit of space to breed.
