If you have small birds, don't sit paper towel rolls upright in your bird room! My budgie got herself stuck because she fell down in and I thankfully found her. But if I hadn't, she'd be dead, she was so scared and stressed.

They can definitely get themselves stuck in all sorts of places for sure - glad your little one is okay!

wow, really great video! Doesn't make me more paranoid as I already am, when it comes to my beloved birds. Having birds made me more aware of all this things, changed my eating and food-buying habits, cleaners, even clothings etc. Anything that's dangerous for birds or animals in general can not be good for humans in the long term (chocolate aside... 😆)

Thank you for this, to further defend the not having dogs and birds together, my friend lost her cockatiel to her dog attacking him when he was outside of his cage and landed. It just took two seconds. I’ve heard of another story like this too, it’s never worth it

Summary of the video for my own use, might as well post it for others. Get an airpurifyer for your own and your bird's health. These things are dangerous for parrots: 1. Any non-stick products 2. Anything airbased; candles and such. (burning or spraying anything) 3. Air Polutants; BBQ smoke, smoking any substance at all. 4. Make sure the doors/windows are shut before opening the bird cage. 5. Don't feed poisonous or unhealthy foods: Avocado, human processed food (not even a crumb), human drinks. 6. Indigestable fibers; they come from unsuitable toys (plastics, fabrics, cotton rope, etc.). 7. Household cleaners (incl the chemicals that end up in the air). 8. Mixing birds with other pets. 9. electrical cables and wires 10. Many poisonous plants (flower bouquets, See safe and toxic list in the description) 11. ceiling fans. (1 accident and you're gonna be cleaning up feathers for the rest of the day). 12. cooking when your bird is out (unless you like eating a different kind of chicken) 13. Open water (toilet seat lid up, sinks of water, bathtubs, etc.) 14. VOC's; volatile organic compounds. (off-gassing of New furniture, painting, glueing, dry-cleaning, solvents, flooring). 15. drafts; put your birds in a well circulated area, but the temperature fluctuation of a draft gives bird's body stress = sick 16. Incorrect levels of humidity and temperature. (between 50 and 70 percent humidity, minimum 18 degrees Celcius.) 17. heavy metal poisoning; galvanized material, lead, etc. (like cheap toys, metal bells need to be stainless steel)

Heavy metal - apparently some of the bird toys may have it in them - the clips and bells definitely as you say. I purchased the lead testing swabs but not sure whether the swab itself would not cause problems so didn’t test anything as yet

What about pure essential oils in a diffuser? I already attempt to keep our house as low tox as possible and stopped using candles over 5 years ago but I love using pure essential oils (low amounts) on a daily basis usually. Our small dog seems to be ok with them but I can appreciate birds might be different.

I love plants but always mindful which ones I can have in the room they are in (for whatever reason they only keep to the living room) so any potentially poisonous ones are in the kitchen (because I definitely don’t let them come there) I have a Bird of Paradise there. In their immediate surroundings I have orchids and money trees. They are not interested in any plants so that is lucky It is a minefield with the other stuff. Because one can read up on a plant but other items are often not marked or one doesn’t have any way of finding what is in there (with the VOC especially)

It really is so hard to sift through what’s safe and not - just shows that birds are not a suitable pet for everyone!

Could you talk more about avocado? Is it linked to long term effects down the line for birds? Or more immediate? Asking bc my parrot had previously been given avocado before we got him 10 years ago. We’ve never given it to him but just curious if there’s any behaviors or concerns with him that could be linked to that.
@BirdNerdSophie Жыл бұрын
Avocado can kill birds very quickly - in the wild they slowly ripen naturally on trees which eliminates the toxin persin from the fruit so animals can eat it. For avocados sold in stores, they are taken off the trees and speed ripened which doesn't get rid of the toxin. Once parrots are exposed to avocado, there isn't much of a treatment option to help them unfortunately. It's possible that your bird was very lucky and came in to contact with an avocado with much lower levels of persin but this is very rare!

Thanks once again sophie! Haha , one more question since you know so much about these lovely birds!!, are your cockatiels sometimes aggressive? Like they are tamed and will fly after you to sit on you but *sometimes* won't step up and try to bite? Please let me know! *also one more question* does your cockatiels sing when you are out of the room? Do they do that to catch your attention or want you inside the room?
@BirdNerdSophie Жыл бұрын
Sometimes they will beak us and not want to step up but if we show them a treat they usually will! And yes they will sing when we are out of the room - the do it more to annoy each other though!

Hey, thanks for this video! I have a question, you know zupreem pellets? Can I give my cockatiels the budgie size zupreem pellets or the cockatiel pellets? Is it just the size difference or the difference in the pellets ingredients?, Also what's the expiry date for the zupreem pellets onces it's opened?,where should we store it? In fridge or room temperature? How many tablespoons does your cockatiels eat everyday? Once or twice a day? Please answer all my questions! Thanks for the help you have been doing for me since I started watching your videos, such a lovely person you are. Much love to your birds aswell.

Thank you for this video! I have a couple questions, in the room next to my birds room my mum has a scented candle, she never lights it but leaves the lid off and it make the whole room and outside the room smell like the candle, I have asked her to leave the lid on or at least shut her door but she refuses to, is that going to be harmful to my birds? Also, I’m going on holiday for a week and my birds will be looked after in a different house but before we go my mum is cleaning the oven with oven cleaner so it has a week to air out before my birds come back into the house, is that going to be safe for my birds to come back into the house?? I do have a air purifier in their room and always shut the door
@BirdNerdSophie Жыл бұрын
Hey! If you can smell the scent where the birds are, then they will be breathing it in as well. Oven cleaners are very toxic to birds - I can’t say for certain if the chemicals will have gone in that time, especially if the windows and doors are closed because you are away!

Hello! I have a 2 year old cockatiel named Atlas. Atlas is currently my only bird, and I am considering getting another bird as a companion for him. Do birds only bond with other birds of the same species, or could I consider getting a budgie or GCC? Hopefully Atlas also could meet a potential new bird before we buy them to make sure they will get along.

Cockatiels tend to get bullied by other species, especially conures and budgies, so we usually recommend going with another cockatiel!

We use air purifier (Honeywell HPA 100 HEPA filter) for our Conure at night near her cage. I noticed the purifier emits a sweet smelling odor. Is such odor harmful for her?
@BirdNerdSophie Жыл бұрын
Air purifiers shouldn’t have an odour! When did you last change/clean the filter?
@kiritm829 Жыл бұрын
Thank you for prompt response. There are two filters in the air purifier. Outer filter (black foam) was cleaned a week ago and replaced after the purifier alerted. On inspection the inside HEPA filter looked clean after couple of months of constant running. Upon turning off the purifier the odor has gone away. New filters are on order. We will see if the odor returns. By the way we also have humidifier running at night near the cage at low setting; in case combination of purifier and humidity causes a sweet odor. Point is, since perfume odors are harmful to birds, could this sweet odor be harmful? Again, thank you for all the work you are doing to protect our feather families.

Wanted to ask, I am getting cockatiels soon and I have the choice of getting a pair or a single cockatiel(Hand Tamed), I have heard online that getting 2 birds could result in them not wanting to be tame at all and becoming completely untamed, is this true, or is this just another internet rumour? and if it is true, could I tame one bird first then buy another, tame that one and then introduce them?
