I've said it once, I'll say it again: Sylvester is the single most underrated character in the Looney Tune canon - and maybe in animation in general. He's insanely malleable, and he's the best acted in his cartoons. He can make you belly laugh in one scene, and absolutely break your heart (case and point: Birds Anonymous). He's brilliant and deserves far more love than he gets.

Well at the time this was made, in the 1950s, people hadn't quite adopted the mindset that animation is for kids. There was no rating system yet, all films were either passed or rejected by the Hays Production Code. So Looney Tunes back then were never made for kids.
@schizoidboy3 жыл бұрын
In response to your response it was said by Chuck Jones that they were not thinking of making cartoons for kids but they were looking for something that would make them laugh. So it was probably made with adults in mind.

Hanna-Barbera felt their limited budget TV animation wouldn’t be appreciated by adults due its stiffness and such. So they catered it towards children and it stuck due to how popular the shows themselves were. I'll second this one--it's not even a spoof actually but rather a really well done homage to the detective noir. Yes, Garfield is having a fantasy sequence in which he's a detective, but it's handled straight. There's a legitimate murder, a trip to the morgue where Garfield asks the mortician to show him the body, two very lovely (human) females who Garfield has feelings for and lots of coffee. It's surprisingly adult for a cartoon series about a fat cat who hates Mondays, loves food and kicks his dog buddy off the table. It is however no surprise that the original version of this story was in the book "Garfield:His 9 Lives" which is what the special by the same name is based upon--except this one got its own special. The original also featured everyone being a cat and done in a more realistic style.

I like the ending with the orange cat breaking down and Sylvester holding him down. It's played for laughs, but like the rest of the episode, there's a lot of truth in it. Sometimes it's easier to be stronger for someone else than for yourself, and in that way, the ending shows how a mentor who needs you as much as you need them can be more powerful than the perfect mentor the orange cat was trying to be the whole episode.

It about O mega wanting revenge against deveostors for betrayal in there past. Prime is trying to convince him that revenge won't change anything which leads the two butting heads the entire episode. I don't know if I suggest this before, but just in case, here's another Looney Tune dark cartoon you should look at it (back when it was originally known as Merry Melodies): Porky Pig's fish tales, an episode where Porky goes fishing, and ends up about to be eaten by a family of fishes and gets chased by an eletric eel, a sword fish and a big octopus in the end.

Weird that Friz Freleng “flies under the radar” today as he made more Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies cartoons than any other director (and won the most Oscars). He may not have been as consistent as Chuck Jones' later output, nor as groundbreaking as as Avery or Clampett, but he made so many of the all-time classics!

In the 50th Anniversary VHS special, this episode was premiered in a theatre to all the nominated Looney Tunes episodes. At the part where Sylvester was crying, Clarence had a brief talk with Sylvester. After the episode ends, Sylvester noticed that Tweety was missing, and Clarence walking out of the theatre. Sylvester ran ahead and pulled Tweety out of Clarence's mouth saying... Sylvester: I'll take that, buster. You certainly can not be trusted. *then was snatched by granny.* Granny: And that goes for both of you. Tweety: It's like the saying, in one cat and out the other.

When I first saw this as a kid, I always thought it was very cruel how Tweety writes off all cats as "bad." I mean, I know cats are geared to hunt, and even I note that change is particularly rare in human beings, but he just wrote them all off as utterly, and completely irredeemable, or treatable. And as I recall, HE was the one asking if Sylvester "liked" him anymore, so it's almost like he's knowingly taunting him while knowing it's in his nature to hunt birds. That's what got me.
