Birds - environmental enrichment in wildlife rescue center

Parrots, parakeets and macaws spend their days foraging for food, flying here and there, looking out, playing, chewing branches, these all situations going on in the wild. They are definitely very curious and active.
In captivity they do not have such opportunity, so we must create this for them. Feeding them a proper diet is not enough. Therefore, they need constant environmental enrichment. Toys help lots but also the fact that you can put them branches with leaves, setting them in different positions and making new scenarios for them.
What are some benefit of this simple change of branches?
They hardly get stressed which means, they will not easily get sick as their immune system is strengthened.
Parrots beak are always growing, so they need to give some use of it in order to avoid overgrown which can lead to difficulty to comfortably open and close it; thus, leading to malnutrition along with a wide range of other health problems.
This is why we do this constanly every week as we take care of around 60 parrots and gladly none of them suffers this problem.

En cautiverio no tienen tal oportunidad, así que debemos crear esto para ellos. Alimentarlos con una dieta adecuada no es suficiente. Por lo tanto, necesitan un enriquecimiento ambiental constante. Los juguetes ayudan mucho, pero también el hecho de que podamos ponerles ramas con hojas, colocarlos en diferentes posiciones y crear nuevos escenarios para ellos.
¿Cuáles son algunos beneficios de este simple cambio de ramas?
Las aves dificilmente se estresarán, lo que significa que no se enfermarán fácilmente ya que su sistema inmunológico se mantiene muy bien.
El pico de los loros siempre está creciendo, por lo que necesitan darle uso para evitar el crecimiento excesivo, lo que puede ocasionarles dificultades para abrirlo y cerrarlo cómodamente; y con esto llevándolas a casos de desnutrición junto con una amplia gama de otros problemas de salud.
Es por eso que hacemos esto constantemente cada semana, ya que cuidamos a unas 60 y gracias a estos esfuerzos ninguno de ellos sufre este problema.
