The lake at Mason Park here in Irvine, Orange Country, California was stocked with "mosquito fish". Slowly but surely, more and more birds showed up each morning for a "free lunch", make that "breakfast". Does anyone know how the word gets out? For example, the American White Pelicans. It starts with one bird one day. The next there are a couple, and after a few days it's more than 50! Somehow they communicate "Follow me! I know where the easy pickings are!"
Near the end of the video you will also see egrets, both Snowy Egrets and Giant Egrets, standing at the lake edge taking advantage of the fish being chased to the edge of the lake by the pelicans. As the pelicans move around the lake, the egrets follow! Now that is "bird brained"! (Despite what we mean by that expression, many birds are actually very intelligent, and here is a great example of it.)
In the video you can see American White Pelicans, Double-Crested Cormorants, Giant Egrets, Snowy Egrets, American Coots, and possibly more.
Don't miss the full moon just above the treeline as it's getting close to setting.
