Amazing footage! That looks like a huge (do you know what kind?) fish the Heron caught! The fish was struggling, but the hungry Heron managed to fully consume (alive?!) it all okay? It looked like the unlucky thing was still desperately kicking inside too! I wonder, does the large fish stand any chance of escaping if eaten in that condition? Maybe it can turn around inside the elastic neck/stomach and has a chance of survival here.

Loved this video, I’m glad you filmed as long as you did. There’s so much going on and they’re incredibly fascinating to watch. One of the many cool things was after baby pushed baby into the pool, mama came a running to dole out some discipline to the offender by nudging him in the rear, lol. This is my take on what followed: When the same offender got on top of her baby in the pool, she really became displeased. She gets in the pool, thrashes the water, nudges mr. mischievous in the butt several times and actually mounts him to further hit home her point. She really meant business with this guy. I wonder if he’s picked at her baby before and she’s sick of it or if she’s mad that his mother (probably the other female that came up and is standing by the pool) isn’t dealing with him. This might sound like I’m engaging in Anthropomorphism, but as many know in elephant society mamas are extremely protective of their young and adults dole out discipline to keep orderliness within the herd. Again, fantastic video, thanks for sharing it.

A herd of elephants in a barren, treeless enclosure - how friggin sad. There is nothing natural about their lives or their behavior.

Shannon, yes, apparently that's a tag, and being in its right ear indicates it's a male.

Sure its not a Red Diamond Rattlesnake? Western's aren't really found in Anza Borrego. They are farther east. Just a heads up is all...

+Silence Dogood , thanks for your comment. I am not an expert on snakes. I just tried to identify it by doing some googling and making my best guess. Are there any distinguishing characteristics that you can see in the video that would confirm your identification? Thanks. John

+Espresso Coffee Snobs No worries. They are very close in appearance. The first giveaway for me was the red tint it had. But the biggest is that the geographical range of the two don't really overlap. The Western is mostly in the south east of california and the Red is mostly in the south west of california. Anza Borrego is in the south west part of the state. The best site that I have come across so far is california herps. www.californiaherps.com/snakes/pages/c.atrox.html www.californiaherps.com/snakes/pages/c.ruber.html Hope this helps!

Thank you so much for sharing this amazing video! Enjoyed it!!! I love Elephants, and I watch these Elephants every day on the webcam. The two Elephants in the beginning are, Msholo on left, the oldest bull in the heard, and Vus'Musi' aka "Musi" or Moose, the first Elephant born in this herd. He is the next oldest bull. Msholo is mentoring Musi to become a strong bull. When he goes down close to the ground he allows Musi to see him as a "smaller" Elephant and less overwhelming and they do, "play spar" a lot. Musi's Mother is, Ndulamitsui, aka Ndula, and she appears in the video around the 9:39 time frame. Musi will be ten years old this year in. Feb., and Ndula still has a close relationship with him. Musi's little brother is Lutsandvo, aka, "Luti." who was in the pool with them and playing. Thanks again for sharing the "Ellies" with us. You filmed some great coverage!
