^^All things KME at bladehq (thanks for using our links!)
Join us for a look at our KME knife sharpening system accessories package that arrived in the mail today! Up until now I have only used the basic KME kit to achieve ridiculously sharp edges. I couldn't leave well enough alone and long story short I now have the tools to define a true mirror bevel with an edge that will pop a hair dropped on top of it. You guys know how much we love our knives so it only makes sense to start bringing out the most in these steels!
Please give me a quick like to get Frankie to do a sharpening video (see the end of this vid)

Got any suggests for cheap sharpening methods, I'm think about buying a ganzo g727m and want a way to keep it sharp and maybe sharpen some cheap knives for fun. I've looked at a few whetstones and such and just wanted to get your opinion. My latest discovery were some 1000/3000 grit whetstones on amazon for about $30-50 CDN not sure how great the would be for me though, thanks.

Moving on from the deluxe kit. What do you guys like better? The stropping kit with emulsions. Or the lapping film kit. I think their both $130. But which method do you like better?? Thanks Frankie and bird.
@fullfire0
@fullfire0 5 жыл бұрын
I know this is late but the emulsions and the strops will last much longer than the films and the results would be comparable. What I do is I go up to the 1500 grit extra fine stone, then the translucent Arkansas stone, Then I have 5 micron strop, 3 micron strop, 1.5 micron strop, 1 micron strop, 0.5 micron strop, 0.25 micron strop, then I finish on bare horse butt leather (really the finest leather you can come across) and my results are INSANE. I can whittle hairs attached to my arm. Also, I made my own little strops instead of buying from KME so I spent far less money and I'm getting the same results you would from the lapping films. Go to any hardware store and pick up some balsa blocks and you can cut them to fit into the KME stone holder, just make sure you buy them at the same thickness as the KME stones, then get your emulsions and stuff from really anywhere, I buy my stuff from a guy on reddit and he gives me great deals. For the higher microns I use diamond paste and for the finer microns I use poly-diamond sprays or CBN sprays, depending on the knife. Instead of spending $200 on the KME extras I spent like, 50 bucks and got the same results. You don't need the 9 micron lapping films if you have the translucent Arkansas stone as they're about equal in grit. Good luck friend

if you just follow the factory bevel and want to sharpen that back to factory sharp, you would likely start on the 300 or 600 grit stones depending how dull it is.
@danielducu

Hello team, a few questions... how do you add a micro bevel with the KME on a highly polished edge ? you just raise the angle and do the whole sharpening and polishing again ? what is your start diamond plate for the micro bevel ? do you think a micro bevel is a must on an EDC? Thanks... i'm a follower of this channel and really like you guys.
@BirdShotIV
@BirdShotIV 8 жыл бұрын
For the micro bevel I have typically raised the angle and used only one stone, say the 600 grit. I typically do not add micro bevels however, I just use the standard V edge. Micro bevels are useful though, just not necessary

hey guys. my kme is coming tomorrow in the mail, i commented on your other video a couple days ago. what angle does the newest kme go down to? i read 17 degrees but on the kme channel i heard a guy say 15 degrees. what is yours?? one other thing, with the lapping films do you need a glass blank with aluminum back plate? or just the glass. i assume its about as thick as a stone where the aluminum blanks are much thinner and wouldnt work as well with the films...i would want the glass. im thinking im going to wait as well before getting all the accessories like you guys did. i got a leather strop on aluminum plate as well for starters. last thing, how is the 140 xc diamond hone? does it reprofile well enough? or should i get the 100 xxc or the beast if it plan on doing serious reprofiling. sorry about all the questions i know you dont work for kme ha but you guys seem like you dont mind helping people
@DanielReyes-hz1qk
@DanielReyes-hz1qk 7 жыл бұрын
Paul Lonardo It'll go below 17 degrees if you flip the guide over (you can find videos on it) minimum angle will depend on the blade width though. For the lapping films just the glass blanks are needed, same thickness as the diamond hones. If you're planning on doing any reprofiling I would highly recommend the 50 and the 100. You CAN go from 50 to the 140 but the 100 is a good step inbetween

Is there any point to stropping after using the lapping films? Aren’t some of the micron ratings of the films and emulsion the same?
@BirdShotIV
@BirdShotIV 6 жыл бұрын
according to Ron, there is some benefit to using to 0.1 micron CBN to finish the bevel

+Scott McLaughlin lol, keep in mind I am an amateur sharpener, but this system allows for amazing and repeatable results.
@Macgyver46
@Macgyver46 8 жыл бұрын
I am not even amateur. My main experience with blades was learning fighting with edge weapons mainly swords then hand to hand with knives. I even was an instructor for advanced knife combat which is one of my reasons for liking cold steel knifes. A lot of companies claim tactical or military style knives but don't hold up to what I see cold steel produce. I have always like the saying a knifeless man is a lifeless man. It holds true for tactical and Survival. I also think it's one of the only tools everyone uses daily be it a butter knife or something else. Blades are an important part of living.
@Macgyver46

Oh and cold steel makes a lock up that I can feel safe I wont cut my fingers off. Almost lost 2 fingers to a failed lock up. Of all the times a blade has failed for what ever reason by God's good graces I still have all my digits.

I've modified my KME to now sharpen knives longer than 6"-8". Works better with short knives too, as the angle doesn't vary as much due to the longer distance between contact and pivot point. I also reversed that handle grip while putting it back together. I posted a picture on flickr. I think if Ron could fabricate these, they would sell, specifically for kitchen knives and knives like the Kabar. flic.kr/p/SY2tRQ

Regarding different angles when sharpening edges, every stroke made off of center is a degree off 0°. Solution: Do,t move the sharpener to extreme edges, move the knife to center after sharpening left (-) or right (+) 33°or so.

So whats the difference between the .5 micron emulsion and the .5 micron strips....? .5 micron is .5 micron. Why would you need both. Are the strips better than the emulsion or is the emulsion better.

good question! I have no idea, I have yet to try the strips but the emulsions definitely give amazing results.
