This week Dave and I go over the very basics and beginnings of some flight training (indoors) basics of how to get started. Please remember we are trying to condense the information down for you, so this is not done in "real time" - in real time you would take much longer on each phase of improvement.

These BTT vids were really awesome while they lasted... I'll be sorry to see them go! But at the same time, these videos seem like a lot of work. Do what works for you guys. I know all of our questions will be answered in due time, and if we don't get a lump of info every week, we (and our assorted feathered kids) will definitely survive. Good luck with the rest of the cruise!

BTT was a blast; hopefully you might be able to even do it at least once a month or something ("Bird Tricks Monthly", you could call them). We definitely appreciate all your time put into these free videos. I'm super excited to one day follow all of your tips with my future bird. :)

I was watching this and I am teaching my cockatiel how to safely fly indoors and I did the issue of putting her cage with her food directly below her to try and get her down and incredibly enough even though she is under six months and just learning how to actually fly correctly she did the dive and fly you mentioned and landed safely straight outside her cage and went inside!

Have a caique coming to live with me next week - my first bird. Comes from a loving family who have just grown up and know they're not giving him the attention he needs / deserves. I looked after him while they were on holiday and we bonded over kale. Which is a first for me. Have spent all my spare time researching housing, training / entertaining and feeding as I am such a newbie. And your videos / clips are the *best*. Thank you so much. Hopefully it'll help us start on the right footing. I've got my chopsticks ready. I can see how busy you guys are, but you are really changing lives for the better. Will be buying and downloading your videos once I've worked through these KZbins. Understand re not doing Weekly Tuesdays, but even just quick monthly clips would be great - just seeing how you talk and relate to your birds day-to-day is a learning opportunity. Thanks guys, xC (UK)

Owen2624 They teach birds in 'One Day Miracles' (the series) how to clicker train, touch train, and how to step up in 1 day. It will definitely take longer to teach him to step up, so maybe not in 1 day. But it is completely possible in 2 weeks.

Hi , I have a question :) unfortunetly my birds do not know step up really yet. When they are off the cage or off the t-stand they will step up for example on the floor they will both step up, but on the cage or stand no. That's where they all of a sudden get scared of my hands again. The reason the step up on some besides cage and stand is they're so busy trying to get back to the cage I don't think they really know they're on my hands .. But yeah on the cage how would I train them step and and to trust me more, I've tried using the chopstick , I've tried holding a treat so theyde have to step up. Just doesn't work.. Also on the Stand I would try get them away from the cage and then I would use a stick and my hands to teach them step up and I see progress but when I try train them like that they don't really care about treats or anything because they are too like scared or distracted to not be on the cage and I'm really worried that ruins all the training because I see that day and days after that they're acting different and more scared. Help me plzz ? :) I just want the great bird I can have or the bond with them

Parrots have great eye sight, but they are designed for self-pleasing more than people-pleasing. I think dogs are probably better suited since they go by scent and enjoy long training sessions.

Hi guys! I have a galah who steps up and comes out of the cage. But he won't let me scratch his head as whenever I try he moves his head, runs away and pretends to bite me, he is fine with me petting his wings but I know that is not the best thing to do. Any ideas to get him to like being scratched as I heard cockatoos love this and I've never heard of a galah that doesn't like to be scratched. I would like to create a strong bond with him and I feel this would help. Thanks!

@birdexepetise7568
@birdexepetise7568 9 жыл бұрын
Hi, I can help! First you need to put your hand near your Galah's head from where it starts pretending to bite you leave your hand there for 2 minutes or more until it comes down and move towards it every time once it comes down ! What your trying to do is to let your bird used to where your hand is and once you've reached the head of you galah you want to touch it slowly by touching it's feathers first if your bird turns it's head to bite leave your hand there and don't move do this and you will eventually touch it's head Hope it helps :)

With our birds we give them a signal that acts as a request. Ours is opening and closing our fingers on a hand, and if they put their head down that's them wanting it and if they don't, we back off in respect.

I see you do outdoor freeflight with your larger birds quite often. I'm curious, but have you ever worked on flight recall and freeflight with smaller birds, for example... Around pionus size or smaller? I understand that doing outdoor freeflights with smaller birds can be a bit risky, since they might be more prone to startling and flying away, as well as them seeming like an easier target for predators, but what about indoor freeflight? Also, I noticed that Storm isn't in any of your recent videos. What heppened to him? If something tragic happened, I'm really sorry. :(
@BirdTricks
@BirdTricks 8 жыл бұрын
Storm isn't our bird so he went back to his owner after the 45 days we had him for, and we saw him when we were on tour with Ringling because we traveled through his state but now we live on the other side of the country. He is well and great though :) We have trained our sun conures for outdoor freeflight but we prefer the medium to large sized birds for outdoors. Indoor freeflight is great for smaller birds because you can use gymnasiums.

Hey guys , thanks for all the great info. I have a question regarding a bird with a disability. My bird Dusty was not properly cared for in his fislrst few years of life. He was introduced into a cage with am already bred female and was thought to not be a threat because they didn't know his gender. And was left alone for hours. The nightmare this baby boy when the thru was terrifying. The female had bitten 3 toe from one foot off by the time he was discovered. Trust is not taken lightly with this bird. He bonded with me immediately and he now will literally let me do anything to him without complaint or worry. However with his foot getting worse over the years he really has a hard time when landing and walking this really seems to shake his confidence. I would like to know what you might suggest to help him not only cope but also continue to be safe when indoor flying.

BirdTricks Hi I have a question for you guys. I have a 1 year old blue and gold macaw that I have had for a little over 4 months. He was clipped when we got him but I decided I am not going to continue to clip him. So my question is, when will his wings be grown back enough for me to start flight training with him? It has been close to 5 months since he was last clipped. Thanks in advance! :)

Sarah Mangeno In case BirdTricks don't reply, birds molt 2 times every year. But it might take an entire year for all of the feathers to grow back. Plus you might have just missed molting when he got clipped. Hopefully it is soon for you, I got this info from my vet and from BirdTricks. My bird is molting currently, super hormonal as well -_-
@BirdTricks
@BirdTricks 8 жыл бұрын
Have they grown in yet? It takes a long time the larger the bird. Molting depends on diet as well, but a full year should bring your bird fully flighted again.

Jamieleigh and Dave, My lutino cockatiel is prone to flying in a panicked way. I've desensitized her to new people and new places, but sometimes something flips and she starts to panic. Sometimes she'll try and land and bump too hard, then panic. Sometimes she'll hear a loud noise and panic. She'll fly around at full speed, occasionally brushing things around the apartment. Once she's panicking, sometimes she thinks I'm a threat and will try to avoid me. Other times she'll fly around for a minute and eventually land on me. What can I do to get her to be less skittish? And what can I do to encourage her to always come to me when she is panicking? My fear is that if she ever got outside she'd panic and not come back to me.

Hi, I was wondering if you guys would be able to help me. So I had a blue and gold macaw which I sold 2 years ago. I got him back 2 weeks ago. He would step up and come to you. Now he won't. He was sort of neglected in the home he went to. He now will lung when on top of his cage and puff up when you put your hand in the cage and then start to lung. This only happens when he is in or on his cage. When he's on his perch he steps up and he's not so aggressive. Was thinking of getting rid of the cage all together. Making a big perch/play gym out of wood right now. Any advice? He's fully feathered. Doesn't scream so much because of his forging toys and when hes not forging he's actually playing with other toys. Any help or advice would be appreciated. I'm also waiting for my clicker to come in. So haven't been able to start training with a clicker. Well clicker training towards the aggression. Thank you in advance.
@Simani12345
@Simani12345 9 жыл бұрын
European Reefer You should start from the very beginning and disregard all of the previous training. It sounds like he needs to trust you, he shouldn't need to fear you. When you get your clicker try and get to a point where your bird is comfortable with you. Move a little bit forward, beyond the comfort point, and wait until he calms down. When he calms down click and step back. After a tiny bit, go to the latest calm spot and walk a step closer, wait until he calms down, click and take a step back. Eventually you will get close enough for him to be calm, then you can begin clicker training him with treats and target training. You should definitely keep the cage. I'm no BirdTricks so I might be wrong on some explaining. The series 'One Day Miracles' would explain this so much better, I would highly recommend. You can buy a clicker at a pet store if you want to start soon, it will be in the dog section though. Make sure you have the proper nutrition as well with fresh fruits and veggies. Your bird is more likely to bite you if he does not have proper health. Any organic pellets is fine, but BirdTricks sells their own pellets.
