Good morning! My Superb Parrot was clipped when I got him. I practiced hops and has his flights came in he flew further and further. Now he navigates the house so well and does recalls sometimes.

My 8 month old quaker parrot Kevin was clipped due to a disability (missing a foot), and he flies like a champ! When I brought him home in Nov 2020, he would "flutter" from the ground to the top of the ottoman, but I kept his play gym and playtime on the ground so he had more control over how close he could get to me or new toys while he was acclimating to his new home. Kevin just started flying by himself. I always encouraged it with treats, but flying to a human (he loves all people) seems to be self-reinforcing, so he just keeps doing it! I know I am one of the fortunate ones, and because of Kevin's foot disability, free flight has always been the dream so he can still enjoy being a bird. Within the last two months, he has even started navigating doorways, flying around corners, and recovering well from overshooting a landing. Next step is a batting cage and desensitization!

When I started to build the muscles by running around the house with my African Grey on hand with an slight up and down motion and every time he opened his wings to flap I would extitedly say good fly fly. (When I got him he used to pluck his flight feathers on one side). Now, I think out off jealousy from watching my quackers and more recently added budgies fly around the room, he no longer plucks and can do two whole laps around my living room/kitchen (open concept) and flies to me whenever he wants me.

I love the jumper! My girlfriend would go wild for it! On a more serious note, I'm really not a fan of clipping birds wings for any reason other than medical. It's so sad to see! But, it's good to see a video like this talking about how to flight train clipped birds. Some birds may be rescued clipped, or come that way when people take them on, so having a video discussing the specific ways to train a clipped bird is an awesome thing!

My Black Capped Conure had a deep clip when we got him (7-10 feathers in instead of 3-5). We got him from a Petland (cause we saw him and fell in love with him and couldn’t let him stay in those conditions - I wish I could save them all) and either the petland or the breeder clipped him. I was originally going to get a cockatiel from a nice shop with an exclusive breeder who doesn’t clip. They clip theirs AFTER they finish fledging but if you buy them before they do (which odds are you would have to because they sell so quickly) you can have them not clip. But we got our lil guy a month before schedule and he came clipped unfortunately. I’m really hoping his feathers will all grow in as quickly as possible so I can start really flight training. (He also recently had a respiratory infection from the ice storm and has some plucked patches to grow back). But I agree, birds are meant to fly! Jamie said in one of her somewhat recent videos, “would you cut the feet off of a child right before they started to try to learn to walk? It wouldn’t stop their instinct to walk, but it would make it more painful and more dangerous.” (Paraphrasing) I thought that was a perfect way to tell someone what that’s like for a bird.

@@arianavail It's good you rescued him! Some of the birds in petshops are kept in awful conditions... I do know a couple of ok ones though! They will generally grow back fine, just keep an eye on it! you can also provide extra protein to help, scrambled eggs, peas etc! Yeah, I really liked that video and it's very true! There's a few small things I disagree with BT's on. But so much I agree on! They really are good. I liked the videos JL and Dave did with Marlene too!

My nanday had both wings and his tail clipped when I got him. He wasn't even confident enough to really climb around much. But he really loved me and just wanted to be as close to me as possible whenever he was outside of his cage. So using that to my advantage I put his cage and my computer desk right up close and left his door open and went back to work. He would yell and hang out of the door trying to reach me. He eventually made the hop and I caught him. Then i just built it up from there. A few months later and all his feathers have grown back in so nicely and he flies like a rocket all over the place and is so good at recall from anywhere in the house!

I got my 2 lovebird parrots a few months ago and they’re around 6 months now. They have clipped wings from when I got them and they both try to fly often and I encourage it. I usually have them fly from their on their or in their cage to me since they always want to be with me. They do really well for having their wings clipped and I always praise and give them treats for it. I don’t move too far from them for them to fly to me so they can safely land on me without failing. I hope I’m doing all that right! Keep up the amazing and informative videos! They help a lot!

So helpful! My rescue Ekkie (got him when he was 7) was kept in cage and never learned to fly! He has very little confidence but a year after having him he stated to jump fly into my bed (very un gracefully). I used to the work fly every time he would and gave him a jack pot reward! I put up a rope by his cage and now when he’s on it (slightly higher than me). I am able to get him to fly to me if I have his whole treat jar! I’ve had to catch him a few times but he’s just learning to use his feet to catch himself! We’ve been doing one or two of those every morning, and I’m so happy with his slow and steady progress! You could tell he’s gaining confidence in his wings back! Thanks for the tips Jamie! Can’t wait to see him become sure of his ability to fly!

Of course I have to comment! I’ve learned so much from watching your videos. My only sadness is, I know someone that has 2 green cheek conures. They are a mated pair. They don’t have toys, definitely a very small cage, and they are clipped, 24/7. The owners just have them for the babies they produce. It breaks my heart. That’s why I’m so grateful for all of your VERY INFORMATIVE videos. It gives me hope that other bird parents, who don’t free fly their birds, gets the message and slowly teach their birds to free fly. Thank you again. Your videos just keep giving me more information, that hopefully, I’ll be able to use one day. ❤️🕊🦜TOL🍀💖🕊😘

Just today I drove 3 hours for a cockatiel. He is a year old and hours before I got him they decided to clip his wings. They didn't only clip the first 4-5 flight feathers.... they clipped his feathers down his whole wing! This came in perfect time for me! They even knew that the bird would get to fly all day in the bird room. I promised the little guy that his feathers won't ever be clipped again!

Your first point about the bird wanting the fly nearly made me cry. I've finally made breakthroughs with one of my young alexandrine parrot rescues with reguards to her wanting to fly. But when you explained the birds that dont want to fly; that was a complete description of my now 29 year old (got her at 28) B&G macaw, who had been clipped for about 26-27 years. There are 3 times she took flight here. She got too excited and accidentally took flight and scared herself, she unlatched the top of her cage and it fell, then another she got scared by a large object being moved. But besides that, she only walks and climbs.

we adopted a blue headed pionus and Bronze wing pionus from a rescue in August. It has been a process developing skill training parrots, but also in evaluating where these birds are at physically and mentally as they were in foster/rescue for a long time. They have been with the rescue for at least 6 years. Age is uknown, but it is thought they are perhaps 15 years old. I suspect the bronze wing was previously in someone's breeding program. She has had health issues including egg binding and is more reserved with her trust. She is more likely to aggressively posture if she does not care for a person or interaction, though she is generally a chill personality if not pressured. The blue headed is more social, but also more fearful. By a long shot. When he first showed up, there were many fear flights and a lot of crashing that distressed me greatly. Once that settled down and he (randomly chosen pronoun as sex is not known) got more comfortable with his new home, there was much less crashing, but i noticed that his desire to fly remained. I had built a closet play space with a large tree perch in is that they can navigate to from where their cage sits about 2-3 feet away and pretty soon I was noticing that he was electing to fly back to the cage from the closet perch instead of climbing back along the branches we had arranged for them to navigate. At first it was awkward, but he has begun flying quite deftly back to the cage now and I have noticed that he will fly back to the cage from slightly further distances without crashing, though in those cases, i think he is flying more to escape because he is very cage bonded and really gets uncomfortable if brought away from the cage so i have had to desensitize him to home away from the cage gradually. If I keep him away too long or go a bit far, he will decide he does not want that and fly back to the cage, but I considered that ok as he is no longer uncontrolled and crashing, but generally landing nicely on the cage. I have worked to get him very comfortable not just with step up, but spending more time on my hand or shoulder in order to train him that I am a place he can go to for security, figuring that was the next logical step in ultimately training him to recall and simply be comfortable being outside the immediate vicinity of his cage. he looks so proud nd excited every time he has a nice flight. The bronze wig is a much larger, more heavily bodied pionus and seems less excited by flight, but will fly if she is excited enough of the blue headed launches and she simply gets prompted by his flight. At first, they would crash together, but she quickly learned to launch toward the couch or toward me and get a soft landing. She is the only one of the two that has landed on me. Generally it is because I am otherwise occupied and she gets bored and decides to fly over. Then she does that stand up tall and wag the tail thing which looks very much not stressed, but pretty self satisfied. I keep hoping they will molt those clipped feathers, but so far they have not dropped a single clipped feather...

one of my birds I got recently was was from another person and her wings were fully grown out but she didn't have full control of her flights. I am guessing by her age that she was kept in a cage while she was fledging and didn't get to fledge properly so when I tried to do hands-off training and for some reason if she got distracted and flew away she would hurt herself a lot. luckily it was never something serious but this video Really helped! thank you!

I have a Cockatiel, so not a Big bird, she’s 14 weeks old I was hoping she wouldn’t be clipped but she is. It’s not the worst clipping I have seen but because she’s a baby I have been trying to get her more comfortable with moving and getting good balance. She can hop onto me that’s about as far as the “ flying” goes.

I hate clipping, my baby cockatiel was clipped as a baby before I even got him. I arrived and noticed he was clipped. He was only a few months old when I got him. This makes me scared that he won’t have the mussels to fly as well. He is about 10 months now, he is molting now! And is growing back his tail feathers (that he broke🙄) and all of his other ones. I haven’t seen any flight feathers grow in but one fell out the other day, so I am hoping that he will grow those feathers back in Also i love your vids❤️

Do you have a video on how to get birds to take a treat from your hand? I can't find one. I'm taking care of a cockatiel for a month. He has made great progress in trusting me and working with me, but will not take anything from my hand as a treat. Do I need to withhold all food from his cage and only have him get food from me? (I've had multiple birds in the past, but not for a long time.) Also took in a budgie that someone rescued that was extremely wild! I do not leave seed in her cage and only feed her by hand. Yesterday, she flew clear across the room to me on her own to continue feeding after something startled her. Great progress, thanks to all your great videos! Love you guys and your birds!💕🕊 PS I now want to get another cockatiel of my own, but want to go to a breeder in order to get one that will choose ME. Any suggestions in Colorado?

@@vijayramkirath2818 my quakers are doing great, I can only say that spent her life in a cage didn't know how to make turns in the beginning, so she kept flying into the wall and crash and I was super scared for her, but she stopped doing that within three days. If your parrot is clipped, maybe you can just let her do jumps towards you. Instinctively your quaker should use its wings, even without the flight feathers, to land on you, and by the time they grow back he already has a feel for how he can glide and flap and all that. It's definitely better than having a winged bird fighting a wall for three days, I didn't want to clip her but she was scared of my hands so when I tried to pick her up she panicked, the whole idea of befriending a human was probably not an option to her, and to fly out of panic was another thing to her, she was suddenly in the air and had never experienced to end up in the air when she flaps before, so I didn't really know how to handle her without eventually taking her freedom, which I just refused to do and trusted she'd get it after crashingninto the wall a few times. Now she likes to fly around and land on my shoulder, and it's only been three months. I had to trust in her instinct to fly, and have faith that she would realise that I'm not going to hurt her. So, I guess what I'm trying to saynis, you should have faith in your quaker. It will bring you two closer together aswell.

@@corneliahanimann2173 Great To know your quakers are doing great! Yes, i would be really scared as well if my quaker had flown into walls. And yes, i guess its just the feeling that shes gonna get hurt if she doesn't turn. When she gets off her perch, she usually jumps to my finger, or when i leave the room she flies to me. I agree, i will let her fly around the house and see what will happen. Like you said it might bring us closer as well. When i tried to pick her up the first time, she didnt let me as it was in her cage, but when i left, she slowly started to venture out of the cage, and would hop onto fingers.

A lil question: can I take outside a “bit clipped” bird that doesn’t want to fly?
@charliesflock659

I would probably say no, my teil is clipped and he doesn’t like flying, so I take him out in a travel cage or his harness, something could spoke the bird still.

This would actually be very risky. Even the slightest wind can take a clipped or "unflighted" bird up and away very quickly. Then once they land on the ground out of sight of you they are a greater risk for predator attacks. Also, when startled a bird that has shown no interest in flying can suddenly take off even without wind. I would recommend looking into bird backpacks if you want to take your bird out for a walk. 😊

You can start with trying to recall train her, if you begin the recall and have her jump or walk to you then you can just make the distance further and further and soon she'll be flying. I have t-stands all over that I would put my bird on and then hold a treat they really love and see if they're willing to come to you for the treat.

Hi Jamie. We did initially clip our baby once she fledged because our house wasn't condusive to the space needed and she was getting hurt. We did what we needed to on our end to make it safer and have let her feathers come back in. We are following your guidance and she is now flying and doing really well. Our challenge is this..now we can't keep her on her perch. She flys and gets into EVERYTHING. We normal pick her up and then set her back on the perch and use a stay command...but this doesn't seem to always work. Any suggestions for getting her to stay put UNTIL she is calld?

@@robinprivate6667 lol ya I tried to do a "stay" training, where he gets treats for staying where he is, and it got better, most of the time I still turn around and walk away to then go "Oh what is that on my head again? Long time no see Pikachu!".

She has a few videos on hormonal behaviour and how to trigger it. It's just something you shouldn't encourage because they can start thinking lf you as their mate, and they also start attacking whoever they're jealous of and they bite more and more agressively. I figure you are better off watching their video about it because it's quite educating, and I'm already probably missing crucial information by telling you what they said
