No, the muzzle is so he doesn’t eat mice and chipmunks and grouse chicks. He’s got very fast hunter even on a leash.

Although I respect your opinion, published research proves otherwise. I am referencing Stephen Herrero, Professor Emeritus of Environmental Science at the University of Calgary. He is recognized worldwide as the leading authority on bear ecology, bear attacks, and behaviour. In his extremely valuable reference "Bear Attacks: Their Causes and Avoidance", he states: "...dogs will normally sense a bear before a person will and thus increase your chances of early detection of a marauding bear. The right dog can give you a valuable extension of your senses in bear country." Regarding dogs provoking bear attacks, he states, "My records indicate only one incident of this nature." He explains that the incident occurred 55 years ago in 1968 in Lake Louise after a bird dog chased a sow with cubs. I highly recommend that all backcountry travellers read this book cover to cover before venturing into the woods. Happy hiking!
