Pause at 9:47 and at the very top left corner you'll spot a fish who almost hot through the net but is getting its eyes popped out of its skull. What a way to go.
@sammylacks49372 жыл бұрын
It eyes are popped out not from the net but from the pressure change coming from the bottom or near the ascending up to the surface. Nearly all fish have a swim bladder along it's belly to allow neutral buoyancy. As it leaves the bottom the water pressure lessens and the gas in the bladder expands pushing outwards causing eyes to pop like you see. No it's probably not a pleasant way to end life. If that fish or any brought up from deeper water were to get out that net or thrown back for whatever reason it would helplessly flop at the surface because of expanded gas in bladder. I ve never been on a factory ship like this but did fish from my much smaller pleasure fishing center console. The fish we incidentally caught or ones not legal we had a small diameter needle that we inserted in th belly just enough to deflate the bladder and the fish returned could swim back down. This causes no harm and in a couple of days it's bladder is refilled normally. Factory ships like this and other commercial fishing ships may not appear humane and do take vast amounts of fish from the ocean but are the only economical feasible manner to feed the population. Bon appetite.

Overfishing is depleting all species. Our kids and theirs will have to face this man made tragedy if we don't stop this. Companies like this don't even share any significant percentage of the profits with all the people doing all the work. Those people busting their hump risk their lives every single day and for what? A tiny salary(compared to the effort and the risk)! This has got to stop. Inland fish farms/aguaponics is a great solution.
@Groucho667710 жыл бұрын
John, this is not "overfishing", this is Icelanders reaping the rewards of careful, sustainable management of their seas. If you want to see "overfishing", go South to the waters that are "managed" by the European Union, where for years, perfectly good fish were discarded back into the sea, simply because they were the "wrong" fish for that particular area. The madness of the EU has decimated what was once the richest fishing grounds in the world.
@johnarizona382010 жыл бұрын
I hear ya man but the irony is we can actually produce these fish in a land based sustainable method. Eventually give population increase producing fish in controlled environments will be the only way possible to meet demands so must we completely deplete the oceans first? Another consideration is all wild caught sea life has had years of pollution to consume as well as naturally occurring toxic elements such as mercury which is poisoning people. I choose to pursue this and hope others can see the common sense in doing so as well. If you want change you gotta start with the man in the mirror. mj
@johnarizona382010 жыл бұрын
One further note to learn from others and not repeat historical tragedies: In Alaska many use fish wheels to haul large numbers of fish and now that is halting due to over fishing. The trawl you see in this video should be obvious the exact same thing is happening. You cannot simply calculate one countries take from the sea and think your only reaping a reasonable portion. That is wearing blinders to the full picture. Many today lie to themselves due to greed for so long the truth is completely obscured and others simply don't have the ability to understand global impact facts. The time is very close to being past a point of repair and history will remember both sides and all those associated.
@Ray.Norrish9 жыл бұрын
You make that comment based on.. nothing. In fact you are so deluded, you don't even realise that fish farms are more harmful due to the requirement of up to 6 times the biomass for feeding (plus the resulting fish is a poor substitute in most species)
@johnarizona38209 жыл бұрын
Were you taught to attack everyone you disagree with or did you invent that yourself. I am guessing you learned this by watching the people you grew up around so I won't blame you directly. Personal attacks in a disagreement in general negate your point and by proxy lend credit to those you disagree with so you are losing before you even begin. If you are going to dispute someone then show facts and not emotional rants like a child. If you learn nothing else here learn this: the best rule of any debate is to attack an idea but never the person offering it. Peace friend and maybe together we can help solve the problem rather than waste time and energy fighting over it. Make sense? I hope so. Take care.

That's debatable. If there's not a market for it, then it wouldn't be profitable. At the very least it should be done in a responsible and sustainable way. yeah right and people can survive without air, Adam Simjee. it's proven that fish can feel pain, they have a quite complex nerve system, these fish are first crushed in a net, then they are pulled out of there habitat, tossed on deck, stepped on and then they get sweeped of the deck like they are some sort of dirt, ohw yeah and I forgot, meanwhile they are struggling for oxygen which they can barely get from the air. It can take up to a couple of hours for some fish to die. Inhumane does not cover this it's mass murder with an utmost disregard for life, because that is what those fish are living animals. If we would treat cows and pigs like this when they go to the slaughterhouse animal protection agencies would scream out for it to end, unfortunately for the fish they do not posses a petting factor so these horrors go unnoticed by the general public. I hope you refrain yourself from stupid rants in the future that fish can't feel pain and they do not deserve our respect even when we eat them.

+jonyb0b13 Fishing isn't wrong. It's the means which are objectionable. This population of fish will not recover for decades, even if these waters are left unperturbed. Trawling nets destroy redfish habitat while harvesting entire populations. Chalking the issue up to some stupid black and white morality circle-jerk isn't helping. It isn't pro-fishing vs pro-ocean, we're all in the same boat! Ten years from now we will need the spawn of these fish, and because of these factory trawlers there will be not be the populations we need to survive. We need sustainable practices, not quick and easy dollars. You can help AND you can eat fish! Just make sure they come from a sustainable fishery. Don't eat red fish or tuna!
