Dad didn't get the memo: It isn't HIS birthday.... Maybe he thought the "1" represented... "I'm number 1." It is the unwritten rule in Gorilla World.... Seems to me the male ate the whole cake by himself. It upset me that the zookeepers didn't arrange things to let the twins really enjoyed their party.

(Very late, but I've been very very busy the last months) The zookeepers made sure the others got enough too; I witnessed that. But I focused on the silverback and the 'special cake'. As with all gorillas (both in the wild as in captivity) the silverback can claim all he want. And if it's very jummy he will. That's gorilla life! Keeping the silverback apart from the others is never an option!! That would frustrate him. Not because of the food, but because he can't do his job: watch and protect his family.

Obviously I know zookeepers can’t separate daddy gorilla from the family & in the wild it wouldn’t matter if the rest of the family got any of the special treat or not. As with any species first dibs on food or anything always goes to the dominant male in return for their protection. Yes this family is in captivity but the family dynamics don’t change...and the silverbacks role is still to protect his family at all cost. The silverback isn’t going to differentiate between being in the wild & captivity when it comes to his position in the family. I was glad to hear that zookeepers did make sure that the entire family did get to enjoy a good amount of special treats and the person filming the moment had just focused on the silverback reacting to the special birthday cake which was just as fun to watch! I didn’t think zookeepers would just have one special cake for everyone...They know the families different personalities better than anyone therefore would have known “sharing” the cake wouldn’t have been an option for daddy silverback and had to have made sure the rest of the family could also enjoy the treats too.

The point was to celebrate that the twins turned one. Not many moms can do that job. Not 'all the oter gorillas' ate their cake by the way. The silverback, any silverback, can and will always claim food. Especially when it's his favourite. Luckily every gorilla got more food a few minutes later.

Yep, silverbacks can always claim all the food if they want to. That's why they normally spread food over the entire island in Burgers' Zoo. That way they all can have their share. In Apenheul they have a gorilla presentation where they throw food to the group. If Jambo (their silverback) sees something he likes, he can claim that too even though it's thrown to another gorilla. But he doesn't do that often. The same is in Gaia Zoo with silverback Makula. But he's the most relaxt silverback I know when it comes to food.

I think it was some kind of syrup, but I'm not sure. Silverbacks are always greedy and not sharing. If they want to have something, they even steal it from their kids. But most of the time just looking at a piece of food makes sure that the others don't touch it. But other gorillas get enough food too.

The adults will eat up everything it's the twins birthday and they aren't there to get a one so all the treats mostly went to greedy dad that's a shame so watching this what was the point so sad look at that a big mess a lot of them still aren't going to get to eat they are going crazy better off just giving each of them food and treats the dad was eating oranges already and he left with arms ful .

You cannot split up a gorilla group. If the silverback is seperated from his family, it would cause a lot of stress for him. He needs to protect his family 24/7. Luckily the keepers also gave the other gorillas food by throwing it at them from the roof.
