seeing you and the smiles on your girls faces made me sub. I have two grown Adult girls myself. I love all those projects we did together. Although, now that I think of it, "my projects" seem to be for their benefit 😀 Keep it up Dad, you are the greatest influence those two have.

I’ve been binge watching your videos. Not only am I learning a bunch, but you’re pretty entertaining and I’ve laughed quite a bit, with your sense of humor. Thanks for keeping things simple, for my aspiring mind. Woodworking has become a new interest, now that the kids are all grown and having families of their own. Not a cheap hobby, but it’s been so fun with so much to learn. Thanks for your channel!

That may be true, but the same operations can be performed using many different methods and tools. If I had made the mallet with only hand tools, I'd get complaints from people saying I should have used power tools. 🤷‍♂️

Super video. I have only one question..... Why is the striking surface of the mallet cut at 2 1/2 degrees? Please excuse my ignorance, I'm pretty new at this. Thanks for your time.
@biscuittreewoodworks
@biscuittreewoodworks 10 ай бұрын
It comes down to the geometry between the mallet and your hand on the handle. When striking something with a large mallet, your hand will very naturally be slightly lower than the center of the mallet head when it strikes. If the mallet head was perfectly square, then the mallet face would be at an angle when I hit something and it could glance off the surface. However with the slight angle, the mallet face hits the surface flat with less chance of glancing off and results in a more powerful impact.

The YT guy Eoin Reardon is also a young guy that does old school tool repair. Have you ever heard of - - when you oil a project, oil it every day for a week, Every week 4 a month, Every month 4 a year. He re did his Grandfathers hatchet.

You “saved the piece of oak from the trash bin”? Why don’t you just say “I’ll be using this piece of oak”. A piece of trash bin oak that size here in the U.K. would be prohibitively expensive. So it might be a cool shop made tool but a bloody expensive one.
@biscuittreewoodworks
@biscuittreewoodworks 6 ай бұрын
I said that because I really did save it from being thrown in the trash. I was talking to a moving truck driver and he had several large pieces of oak on his truck that he was planning to throw out on the side of the road. I told him I'd like to have them for potential projects. I cut off a small piece from one of the boards that became this mallet. I can't help how much it costs in the UK, here it's typically trash or fire wood and has basically no value.
@MarcusRefusius
@MarcusRefusius 6 ай бұрын
Us Americans have lots of Native Oaks. Where I live it’s the most common Firewood for Fireplaces and wood stoves. I can buy a full pickup load for > $300. Maybe I should go into the Mallet business! Lately there’s disturbing trend of tearing out old Walnut Orchards because Californians seem to prefer Concrete, Condos and Strip malls over Farmland. Sadly. But there are a lot of people slabbing Black Walnut. Farmers used Black Walnut as rootstock for English Walnut Orchard trees. More specifically, Paradox Rootstock which is a hybrid between Black and English. The supply seems endless, but unfortunately it’s finite. Lots of people slabbing Oak and Olive too With the terrible economy good prices abound. I’m sure the UK must have a hardwood that’s common. A Mallet an be made out of any hardwood. Or even a combination of them. Cheers!

@@MarcusRefusiusNot Californians, corporate developers. If you ask the people, there would be far less concrete and far fewer strip centers. Just sayin’.

@@MarcusRefusius We have a disease decimating our native ash at the moment so ash is available cheap, and beech wood is also affordable here.

You'd be surprised how many people buy things they don't know how to use. Take me for example, I spent several thousands of dollars on cameras, lights, computer, editing software, and all the accessories with no idea how to use most of it and just try to figure it out or watch YT videos to learn little by little!
