I'm bisexual and I recognise that there are more than 2 genders. But I stick with bisexual because if I say I'm pansexual people would either not know what that is or laugh at me, I don't know if I'm attracted to non-binaries, I mean, there aren't a lot of them out there and have you seen the bisexual flag? I love it. The pansexual flag looks like colours you'd see on a piñata, too bright for me.

I'm a bisexual Androgyne, which confuses people until I explain it further. :P it took me decades to figure out my gender identity, considering it's not an outspoken one and I personally hadn't heard of it till I did some Google searching on the subject. For me, gender means nothing when it comes to love. I fall for personality, not what's between someone's legs. You could call me pansexual, but like Tania stated, bisexual can also mean the attraction to other genders on the spectrum. Pisexual sounds like a fun term to use, though. :)
@MidnightSonnet8 жыл бұрын
Thanks! ^^ For me, it was trying to find ANY info at all. Androgynes aren't as "popular" as those who are androgynous. I had to make a couple of obscure google searches before I found anything finite and even then it was very little. Still, it was nice to have answers, even though I wasn't really looking for them. :P Trustworthy info is usually found in places where people of any given particular gender are, either online or offline. Looking at forums, vids, and websites created by people who "get it" was the biggest help to me. :)

That was a wonderful talk, Tania! I am in my fifties and just the last 5 years have come to realize that I am transgender, ftm. During that period I have been paying so much attention to gender and the way men and women act and the social differences. It really opened my eyes to alot. I had to do alot of soul-searching to see if I was really just afraid to be more myself and be butch. But the body dysphoria is very strong so I have figured out that I am trans. On a selfish note, it is so heartwarming to have it affirmed that there are lots of people who are fluid in their attractions, so maybe someone will be attracted to me, lol. I think our society is really opening up and tearing down all those confined ideas about what a man or woman should be. Thankfully!!! And thanks to you for this great contribution! I really enjoyed it, you really said alot, made me think a little more broadly. It was eloquent and with humor, always have to have some fun!

By removing the labels I put on myself and the ones around me, I was able to pretty much see the beauty in everyone. People weren't just, men, women, gay, lesbian, bi, straight, trans, non-binary, black, white, asian, latino, tall, short, ugly, pretty, smart, dumb, muslim, christian, bouddhiste, atheist, vegan, vegetarian, feminist, young, old, skinny, fat...they were just people and it turns out, I like people... a lot and that includes myself.
@chrissnyder20914 жыл бұрын
There are times when getting lost in all the labels can be counterproductive. In my humble opinion simply saying I'm a human I love who I love and all the details really don't matter all that much. Variety is one of the spices of life.
@katherinemorelle71157 жыл бұрын
I'm bisexual and had this very issue. I solved it by using a different (and becoming more popular) definition of bisexuality: attraction to more than one gender. "More than one" means it doesn't limit in terms of understanding that gender is varied and complex. As this definition has grown in popularity, it means that pretty much all non-mono sexualities are included under the bi umbrella- pan and omnisexual, for example. This solution fits me well.

... isn't piesexuality the same thing as pansexuality?
@SuperGreatjob9 жыл бұрын
+AnimeLover JJ I thought this same thing at first, but I think pisexuality is more an accepting nature of all expressions of gender, not just people's gender identity. So like a male who's attracted to a female who behaves in a more masculine way is still heterosexual, but they are willing to look past the traditional role of a woman and see beauty in her no matter what she does. Most pansexual people are probably also "pisexual" but it's still kinda different. Like I'd think of pisexuality as a overarching classification of sexualities.
@ALJJInkGames9 жыл бұрын
+Ben Hyclak I guess that makes since.
@drtaniaisrael9 жыл бұрын
+AnimeLover JJ Thanks for your comment! Many people identify as pansexual to signify attractions to non-binary gender as well as to express their belief that gender is non-binary. I wanted to find a way to talk about the understanding of gender that informs attractions as a distinct construct. Some people view gender as nonbinary but may not be attracted to the full range of gender. So, yes, pansexual is a useful label, but it's not the same thing as pisexual.

Wait, can I clarify coz I'm a bit unsure. Bisexual: sexual attraction to two genders, not necessarily male and female. Can be a combination of any two genders among numerous gender identities. Pansexual: sexual attraction to all genders Polysexual: sexual attraction to more than one gender Did I get that right? If not, someone pls correct me thanks.
@georgiegeorgiev36599 жыл бұрын
+Elizabeth Lim Polysexual is attraction to many genders (more than two), Bisexual is attraction to more than one gender (any two). But personally i don't understand why people put gender in words that don't mention anything about genderitself. The word is BI-SEXUAL - two sexes, so a bisexual is a person who is attracted to two (both) sexes, that is all. Not gender, gender and sex are different.
@elizabethholcomb24749 жыл бұрын
+Georgie Georgiev The "sex" part of bisexual isn't based on sex. Sexuality is what gender you are physically attracted to. Some bi people do like the 2 binaries, but some don't. Some are like me and have an attraction to anyone of any gender, but I identify as bi and not pan as a personal choice.

What a fantastic, engaging, provocative and enigmatic presentation! Much respect and admiration, and congratulations... One unexpected conclusion left by this clever & brilliant trailblazing talk (along with many talks about related themes) is that the English language (and I would contend that indeed most if not all human languages) is glaringly ill-equipped to properly facilitate such a topic. It suffers a great word-deficit in terms of: gender and its vastly varied expression; sex- the currently quite polarized duality instead of the lovely 'spectrum' of the biology and anatomy of our genitals and sexual organs; and sexuality- and the attractions that drive our sexual behavior, activities, desires and ideals. Sadly, in my opinion the unique and creative term: πsexual (while clearly not the same as pansexual as many commenters assert) is ambiguous & unclear probably because it conains the word sexual when what you're referring to is gender perspective. We definitely need a larger, more accurate & specific lexicon and vocabulary in English to describe, express & discuss the colorful, nuanced world of human psychology & behavior particularly in regards to gender, atraction & sexuality. But this is no simple or small matter! In addition to coining such terms, they must be accepted and put into use by the population- which must follow introduction to & education of the new terms. Anyway, I love this video. Thank you so much for this delightful & insightful presentation Tania!

Tania Israel Except that "bisexual" is actually defined by the bisexual community as "attraction to the same and other genders" not just the binary genders of men and women. The idea that bisexual means "attraction to only two genders" is obsolete.
@drtaniaisrael9 жыл бұрын
J Wa True, many people who identify as bisexual don't define their attractions in a binary way (although some do), but this critique of bisexuality remains. In a recent study, I found that bisexual and pansexual people had similarly positive attitudes toward transgender people, providing additional evidence that bisexual people do not view gender as binary.

+Matthew Davenport "for some reason they know my mind better than I do and many of them have hardly ever spoken to me or sometimes NEVER even spoken to me." "I would love a world where we didn't have to be given labels and could just love who we love and be who we are" I find labels only hold any power when you are the one giving them to yourself. They help define who you are, and communicate that to other people. I'm a polyamorous, transsexual lesbian. That's just three of them. I find it better to not give a damn about what anyone tries to tell you you are, especially when they have never even spoken to you. It's annoying, yes. I think people need to stop that, yes. But I don't let their labels of me affect my life. It's their problem how they see me. A quote by Anthony Hopkins: "It's none of my business what others say of me and think of me. I am what I am and I do what I do." Hope that made any sense.
@danakathryn12458 жыл бұрын
wait, so is what I understand correct? So pansexuality is being attracted to all genders. Ive openly identified as bisexual for over a year now. So pi-sexuality is more of accepting that there are more genders than just two? So isn't the sexuality part of the equation the sexual attraction? Im just confused on that aspect, however this is so interesting and eye opening, I'm just trying to have a more clear understanding. So would say that I am attracted to more than two genders, but I am completely aware and accepting to a wide range of genders, but not attracted to that whole wide range, would that mean I would be identifying as a bisexual pisexuality. My main question is how the sexuality aspect comes in to play here. This is really interesting and if my understanding is correct its the term I've been looking for. So this is basically what I understand: pisexuality is accepting all genders and that gender is a wide construct and has unlimited identifications, but also meaning that you can be attracted to more than just two binary genders. Whereas pansexuality mean being sexually attracted to all possible genders. Am I on the right track? Sorry this is all over the place. This is really interesting and eye-opening and I just would like to know if my understanding of this is clear/correct.

See, I disagree with the fact that bisexual implies that there are only two genders, because that would mean pansexuals would not exist to us... I feel like bisexual implies an attraction to both the far left and far right of the gender spectrum, unlike pansexual which encompasses a vast majority or the entirety of the spectrum. That doesn't mean a bisexual person can't be attracted to say transgender individuals or non-binary individuals.

Cis men are male (gender), cis women are female (gender), trans men are male (gender), trans woman are female (gender), intersex people are male (gender) or female (gender), not both. +coffe8300 Thanks for your comment!

Following queer theory, I see the terms [sex, gender, desire]. From Wiki: "Pansexuality, or omnisexuality, is the sexual, romantic or emotional attraction (*desire?) towards people regardless of their sex or gender identity." How would you describe your pisexuality in those terms? It seems pisexuality is not a desire but just stating the acceptance of multiple gender identites?
