Man that's normal with carbon parts -- just go over it with a thick layer of 2K filler primer in a spray gun. Then send it down. It might seem as a tedious job but it really isn't. Anyway the OEM part is a better choice indeed ... Keep it up ! ;)

Anyway I have experience with performance carbon parts and sometimes in order to achieve lighter parts of just by accident we had these pinholes there. i don’t really want to discuss the quality of the panel since it was free. Filler primers has problems dealing even with 1.8 guns, so I can only imagine how diluted they are to work with a can... one reason they just can't fell and level small pin holes, as composites weaves.. I have painted many things made of carbon fiber, and I have found that when you sand it with 320 like as if it were fiberglass, works well. When I paint I sand the resin down almost to where the weave starts and then clear over top, sand again with 800 then primer. No fisheying after that🤷♂️. Kinda dumb to give up on something just because it’s not working right the first time, with a bit of effort, that carbon could have been painted flawlessly

I build carbon parts as part of my business. Any time you want to paint, or clear a carbon fiber part you should start with a very thorough cleaning with quality wax and grease remover then scuff with your prep grit then W&G remover again. Then your first coat should be applied very wet where it will look like you are painting a screen door. While it's still very wet, take a rubber squeege and work that coat into the pores of the material. Once it cures, sand and repeat until you get to a smooth base to paint over with normal quality practices. It's a huge pain. If you want to clear one it's the same process except you use a clear meant for carbon fiber like Duratec Sunshield which is a heavy filling and UV protecting product.

Perhaps our guy will get a few more wheel well parts and do this repair correctly. Even if it takes another $ 1,000 to do a good repair, that is better than losing $ 10,000 + in resale value. No sanding etc. 6:40 - 9:34 - roadtrip 9:35 - 12:24 - process of buying and loading OEM quarter panel, MAYBE it is something closely related to old time BIFB, so OK, another 2min 49sec of proper ,,show" 12:25 - 20:41 - hotel fun, drinking drinks 20:42 - 20:55 - outro. @@fiisho I think that acronym came after the term rice. I'm pretty sure rice is just a dig at a car being Asian. And also it's pretty rice, it won't make the car faster, and for all intents and purposes Chris is leaving this car stock.

If you ever get into an issue like that with a carbon panel again, skim coat it with a layer of West Systems epoxy mixed with some micro balloons. That will pill the pin holes and make it easier to work.
@michaelcoffin43646 жыл бұрын
Welcome to a poorly made carbon part. It's just air bubbles that were trapped in the laminate. It could be because of several reasons. Improperly stirred pot of resin that wasn't degassed before infusion, a vac leak that introduced air into the part, etc. There are products by hawlkeye industries that fix stuff like this.
@michaelcoffin43646 жыл бұрын
@@lb-innovations Sorry man but I completely disagree. I have many years of composite manufacturing experience and own a company called F6 Carbon Fiber. You can see my work if you look me up on facebook. While I do agree the panel doesn't seem to be prepped properly from what we get to see. Sanding the panel down to the point of removing those air voide will get you into the actual carbon cloth. This will actually cause more texture problems. This is 100% air trapped in the laminate between the first layer of cloth and the mold. If it were fish eyes, they would all be perfectly round. Look closely, some of them have square edges. This is an air bubble trapped at the cross hatches of the carbon weave. There are a dozen reasons this could happen. Everything from improper resin mixing technique, bad layup practices, too fast of an infusion, pinhole in the bag, leak at a pleat, leak at the gum tape, infusion bucket got too low and the inlet tube hit open air and sucked some in, etc. This is easily fixed several way. 1, don't let it happen to begin with by using proper techniques or an in mold clear coat. 2, use the hawkeye industries product I mentioned in my first post. Spray it on and work it in with a yellow bondo spreader and sand flat. Then proceed as usual. There are several different ways to do mold release on a part. Wax only, pva only, pva over wax(my personal fav), and a multitude of other chemical based release agents. Each method has it's pros and cons as well as being the prefered choice of each fabricator. 😉

Sounds crazy, but i would recommend you to paint on the high fill primer, and sand afterwards. That way it will go down in all the low spots.

What MPG is your FJ suppose to get? 13.3 doesn't seem too bad considering the bigger tires. I just got 9.6mpg on my 600 mile trip with my Silverado 2500HD. And that has no lift or bigger tires. 13.3 would have been amazing.

This was a great, fun video, just for the sake of breaking up the seriousness and nitpicking of the last couple videos. AWESOME find/deal on that quarter panel, I'm insanely jealous. I think for the carbon fiber panel, you may need something like a heavy duty 2-part epoxy filler primer from your spray gun and then some sanding in order to get an adequate basecoat to start with. Granted, you'd probably have to repeat the process a couple times, but it would be a lot easier and more effective than using rattle cans. But with a whole OEM sheet metal quarter panel, you'll probably have better luck with fitment, and you can start fresh rather than taking chances with repaired panels.

The easiest way I've found when painting over composite with weave showing through (and I think the "correct" way) , be it fiberglass or carbon fiber composite, is to spray a gelcoat over it, sand, then prime (sand again) and paint. I suggest you never try to rebuild a Corvette if you are not willing to do this. A clear epoxy coat will work if you are not painting color over the carbon fiber.
