This makes a whole hell of a lot of sense! I love the science behind it and yeah when my hair grows out, it does have that thining look so I trim again.

I've hardly ever cut or trim my hair in the last 4 years and yet my ends still are extremely thick from root to tip, I used to not like that (crazy, right?) and thought about using a razor to thin out my ends but in the end I switched my thinking around and I'm now thankful for my long healthy thick hair. Your videos are so informative, thank you.

So, I was never been able to grow my hair much past my shoulders until 4 years ago when I got pregnant for the first time. Two years before that, I had cut it short. I didn't cut my hair at all except for occasional trims. I thought it was at just about terminal length. Then I got pregnant and my hair grew dramatically, and it did not fall out after the baby was born. Then I got pregnant again and experienced another growth spurt. Now it's to my waist, and I keep it braided.

My hair is just past my knees. Lately my hair looks thin on the ends but not damaged. It was driving me nuts. And my hair looks kinda puffy and unruly. I've been conditioning it like crazy but nothing changes. Now I can see why. All I have to do now is decide whether to trim a good portion off or just leave it alone ;) Thank you for your video.

This is one one the most informative and detailed videos i have seen on growing hair. We are told to trim our end so often without factoring in the science that our hair strands grow at different rates. It's not only damaged hair that is thin....Old healthy hair gets thin also!

Some people just have hair that is more resistent to damage than others. I'm jealous actually, my hair is a little on the brittle side.

I recently went on a strict vegan diet and lost 1" of thickness from my 4.5" circumference ponytail. I have since quit the diet and incorporated eggs, fish, and dairy back into my diet. The hair loss has slowed, but my hair still hasn't grown in like three months. What's the deal? Also something that should be noted: individual hairs tend to be thinner on the ends if they've never been cut--"whole" hairs. This alone can result in visibly thinner hair on the ends just because it's more wispy.

If I may add, I think every hair has even an individual terminal lengh, right? Or at least "groups" of hairs. The hair close to my forehead doesn't get as long as the hair on the back of my head. It tends to fall out much earlier. So I've got a variation of length mith the hair in my brush, that fall out.

This makes a lot of sense. Thank you so much! Since 2005, I have been struggling with this. I thought that I was doing something wrong to get thinner ends and I was driving myself up the wall trying to figure out what it was. I treated my hair well and the hairdressers were acting like I was doing something wrong because my hair is thinner at the ends.
@BellaPitaBruschetta11 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this! I love the fact that you explain it clearly and according to science. It's such a relief that thinning ends are natural and okay, I've been worried about mine even though I've gone nearly a year without heat and products!

I'm unlucky enough to have PCOS with slight hirsutism, and the only good side to this is I grow hair like crazy. I got my hair cut to a bob that was 4-5 inches about 16 months ago, and I've grown 12 inches of hair since then. That's about .75 inches a month. Some of that is also genetics because my father and mother also grow hair pretty fast and complain to me all the time about having to get it cut to keep it short. Thank you for all your wonderful videos!

Awesome video. I've been growing my hair out for the past couple of years, and I adore wispy/fairytale ends. Unfortunately, since I'm taking better care of my hair now, it's gotten WAY thicker than last winter (nearly three-inch ponytail to nearly FOUR inches) and now it feels twice as heavy with only a few inches of growth.

Well I always supplemented with sublingual b12 tablets during the diet. I think it was just a lack of protein, I was following the 80/10/10 diet (80% carbs, 10% fat, 10% protein). I have re-incorporated fish, eggs, and milk, (but no other meat) and everything seems to be back to normal. I just think my body and amount of muscle mass needs more protein to sustain itself. (after all, hair is made of protein!)

This is one of the reasons why going to the hairdresser was always such a nightmare for me as a kid and why I stopped getting my hair cut as an adult. Sometimes I think I have long hair not because of the aesthetic but because of my fear of hairdressers.

Outstanding science and presentation thereof. I love when you make these applied science videos. ♥ I do have one question - is the length of the anagen phase time purely a function of genes? So a hair is just as likely to fall out when one inch long as 4 feet long, assuming the follicle is the same age?
@noni43159 жыл бұрын
Terminal length does not exist. 80%-90% of hair is in anagen phase, the rest is in the other two phases. So hair is ALWAYS growing. When one hair follicle falls out, a new one comes and begins the anagen phase. The only reason people believe in terminal hair length is because their hair is breaking off. Props to my high school biology teacher for teaching me this.
@LucysCorsetry9 жыл бұрын
+Chelsea Volkina Did you watch the video? I mentioned the exact same thing you did - when one hair falls out, the follicle produces another one. But the length of the anagen phase defines the maximum length the hair can be. If the anagen phase is 10 years and the follicle produces on average 6" a year, then the terminal length is around 5 feet. Hair loss or thinning can be attributed to many factors, including breakage but also periods of stress, injury, illness or poor nutrition. Terminal length absolutely exists; our hair and nail production is self regulated to prevent perversion of epithelial cell turnover (cancer) or stealing excess nutrients from the body - look up the "feather duster" mutation in budgies as an example of uncontrolled production. If the bird doesn't die from predation or starvation from the feathers obstructing its eyes and beak, or affecting its ability to fly properly, then it dies of malnutrition by means of the feathers stealing too many nutrients from the body and its organs shut down.
@LucysCorsetry6 жыл бұрын
Literally the "terminal length" is the longest the hair strand grows before the follicle shifts into catagen and then promptly falls out in the telogen phase. It's implicit in your explanation as well. Some hair breaks off but all hair follicles have a rest phase. The length of time during anagen determines the terminal length of the hair strand. I had a high school teacher who didn't believe in climate change; high school teachers aren't infallible.

This is so informative!!! Thank you so much for sharing this video, it's helping people even nine years later :) my hair reaches past my knees and even though the ends are healthy and there aren't many splits, I did wonder why they suddenly thinned when they used to be so thick. The terminal length makes so much sense. I think I'll just give it a trim and sacrifice a bit of length. Thank you again!! ❤

Jep, same here. I've git quite a lot of them. ^^ Luckily, my ends still seems to be quite thick. Hope they'll continue to grow!

brilliant scientific explanation! btw didn't know you had reached such (knee-length) long length... congratulations! Now, do you have any clue on how to calculate terminal length out of growing it till it doesn't get any more long ? And how do you explain some people do have much faster growing speed like 2inch/month, and different cycle duration ? Also seems in most cases not all hair from different area of head grow the same, usually back is growing faster then front or sides?

Can I tell you my story? When I undergo periods of extreme stress, my hair falls out in clumps, mostly in the forehead/temple area. It was so bad about 4 years ago -- about a 50% loss -- that when it grew back, it looked like I had those ugly 80's chunky bangs. Well, I cut all my hair to about chin length since it was so thin anyway, let the bangs grow out, and then proceeded to grow all my hair long. Now it's about to the middle of my back (and I need a trim due to some split ends).

a couple of years back i noticed my long hair thinning (stress etc) and i decided to chop it all off. ive been taking biotin for about 6 months now and my hairs is growing back really quick and healthy. except for the hairs where your bangs are supposed to be... the weird thing is that the longest layer has really nice thick ends, but the short hairs here and there have thinning ends. i cant really cut those hair because i dont want bangs ive kind of given up hope that the hair around my face will ever be thick and long again

@LucysCorsetry6 жыл бұрын
They're simply not near their terminal length so there's an equilibrium between anagen and telogen phases. But barring fake hair inserts like parandas/parandiyan, almost everyone with long hair will see some taper to their hair, even if they have a blunt haircut and their ends look thick. They can test this by measuring their ponytail circumference at the nape of the neck vs the end of their ponytail using a soft tape measure.

I have lost about 50% of my hair although people don't notice. But it seems I can't grow thicker ends. I guess you could take the amount of hair that grows in a month or a year and then multiply by the duration of an average anagen phase (2 to 7 years) but the only way to know your actual anagen phase is to let your hair grow to that point it tends to fall somewhere between waistlength and hiplength for caucasian people

Is there a way of knowing for sure when you’ve reached terminal length?
@LucysCorsetry4 жыл бұрын
I would estimate that I’ve hit terminal length about 3 times in the span of 15 years. It simply stops getting longer, even avoiding trims for 6 months at a time. I know that my hair is still growing in general because my white hairs and bangs are growing out, but the longer hairs are simply shed and replaced by new hairs. And when health/nutrition/sleep is maximized and it still doesn’t get longer, that’s a pretty good indication that you’ve reached terminal.

Sorry to hear about your awful experiences with hairdressers :/ I had similar (even when I was in cosmetology school) and it drove me to commit hairdresser blasphemy - cutting my own hair because others seem incapable of minding my very clear and well thought-out directions (It's quite infuriating when you do hair and know what you're asking is possible and they simply refuse). It's such a shame that some hairdressers feel they are entitled to take liberties with clients hair.
