To be honest, I thought lost souls only existed in the universe of The Little Mermaid wherein Ursula, the sea witch, would steal the souls of those who have wronged her. This video has opened my eyes to a whole new meaning of “lost souls” which I found out that I could relate to. A soul that is lost is one that is confused as it is presented with a thousand paths yet only one that matters, however, like Elijah on Mount Sinai, the right path is a mere whisper among the thunder and the earthquakes. But, the point is that that tiny whisper can still be heard. As a teenager, it is hard for me to follow the correct path my conscience lays out for me because I get tempted by the other thousand voices that fight for my attention. But after this video, I learned that the conscience actually “places us in the presence of someone that we love.” I now realize that I should always choose the path that does not hurt the people that I love, especially God. Thank you Father Barron for opening my eyes, but more importantly, thank you for helping me find my soul again.

You can tell a lot about a person based on what they choose to 'worship'or what they prioritize in their lives. I know that people tend to ignore their conscience and when we do, it tends to backfire on us because of the guilt we may feel. Our conscience tells us what is right and is a witness to our actions and faithfulness to God. I also think that our conscience is a very powerful thing that we have to listen to especially if it's the voice of God telling us what to do. I understand now that when my relationship with God is strengthened, my conscience is too. Nice video! I definitely agree!!!

Thank You for educating me on this subject. I became a Christian 4 years ago at 45,and a Catholic last year. Before that,I was an adamant Atheist/happy go lucky/jack the lad/womaniser/love money/bad sinner who lived lived life to the full with no conscience at all for my actions. Some of them, I in fact enjoyed & took great pleasure in doing, regardless of who I hurt emotionaly (I never physically hurt anyone). Then God found me (long story) resuced me from my sinful lifestyle choices. Then brought me to his true Church (RCC). Since then my life has completely changed around. I now take great pleasure serving God,by helping others less fortunate than me,in any way I possibly can. I take great pleasure in serving God by bringing others to God. This journey however,is not perfect,as I also suffer tremendous guilt, shame for my past deeds.I also, when I unintentionally sin, feel really bad guilt, shame too. This to me I feel is the Holy Spirit, now within me,guiding me away from such actions/sins again, and chastising me like a parent does a child. I fully understand this, and accept it too. Our God is a loving ,compassionate ,and rigteous God. I praise him and glorify him always & forever. I would like to learn more about the Conscience & Morality Bishop Robert Barron. Please can you suggest, recommend any particar authors/books/Church fathers etc . Thank You. God Bless, Michael

I agree with you Father Barron. Conscience is defined as the vicar of our soul. The voice in our head that helps us what is good or evil. When you stated that our conscience is competing with thousands of voices fighting for our attention, I realized the importance of our conscience. Without it, man would be like a lost sheep; getting further and further away from our shepherd. Thank you for the realization.

Thank you very much for this Father Barron. I was thinking about conscience and had some theories and you helped me to confirm them. I would add that our conscience leads to goodness, and who is the ultimate source of goodness? Well God. Furthermore, people are often disappointed when they want to hear God's voice, they wish for God to talk to them in human language. Why? Human language is prone to error, first soul to words articulation errors, then hearing errors, then interpretation errors. We have to use the material world to talk with each other, we can't directly communicate soul to soul, well this is exactly what conscience is, direct God to soul communication, that never stops and is always there, requires no intellect to understand and exists in everyone. Our soul has two powers, the consciousness and the will. The difference between what we see (consciousness) and what we want to see (our will) manifests as feelings. Well, in addition to our will everyone has God's will in us, directly accessible via our consciousness. The difference between our consciousness and God's will also manifests as a feeling, that is the conscience. We can drown this voice out by listening to our will and our feelings rather than God's will.

Thank you Father Barron for a clear and enlightening discussion on conscience and morality. The video made me realize that our conscience was the voice of God that tells us whether what we do is good or bad. Your video made me realize that our conscience can guide us in the right direction because when we feel shame or guilt, it tells us that we aren't on the path that God wants us to be and that we can change in the future. It really shows that God is merciful and wise as he gives us a permanent guide to becoming the best version of ourselves so we wouldn't be lost in life. Thank you again!

Ever since I can remember, I have always known that there exists a little voice in each one of us that serves as a guide. As you have discussed, Fr. Barron, this voice is our conscience. The conscience is the little voice of the Lord, whispering to us in order to guide us to tell right from wrong. I completely agree with you, Fr. The problem the youth faces today is that it becomes more difficult for us to hear this tiny voice and to search it out. Instead, we are being sidetracked by a thousand other voices that dictate us to do this, to follow this, and to be this. All these voices drown the sound of that one voice that matters the most, our conscience, which must be followed. There are many of the youth today who are not aware of this, and instead are influenced by ideas of peers and media. Thus, the more there exists a need for the youth to be aware of what our conscience is, and how we must use it in the proper manner. Hopefully the rest of the youth find the time to watch this video of yours, Fr. Barron. It is truly enlightening and thank you for posting it for the world to see!

Thank you Fr. Barron for enlightening my understanding of man's conscience. Having a single-minded devotion to God perfects the conscience ("Yahweh is my God") because it is not reduced by corporeal influences. To be rewarded by conscience is good, because it means we have acted in accordance with God's moral law. On the other hand, if we are affected by shame, it is because we know have offended Him. This is especially relevant in today's society when the youth is unable to hear the voice of God because they are more focused on satisfying their own pleasures rather than pleasing God. As you said, there are several distractions in modern culture such as money and fame which pull us farther from God. This teaching reminds me of Matthew 16:26: "what good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?" Certainly, it is more important to follow God than ourselves, because He is the source of all creation and our Savior.

Greetings, Father Barron. I would like to thank you for clearing my thoughts and questions regarding the subject. I agree that the conscience, which seeks to be heard, can be ignored and lost if one is greatly influenced by other factors in society. It is our duty to help steer each other to the moral path. With the help of a clear conscience, which God has given us, we are guided through our struggles and hardships in our lives. Since God has given us freedom, it is now up to us if we listen to the little voice in our heads or turn away from it.

I find Fr. Robert Barron's comments on Conscience and Morality to further strengthen my outlook on the relationship of the two. The video was not only significant for confirming the teachings that I'd learned in school and from my family, but it also shed some light on how society today affects the younger generation. We must keep in mind that if we learn to ignore our conscience and fail to develop it, the level of understanding our surroundings and actions will remain stunted and prevent us from truly being able to improve ourselves as individuals.

This video enlightens me in so many ways. Conscience and morality go together to make us better people. It leads us to the right path so that we do not stray away from the purpose of our lives that God has paved for us. The youth today needs to realize it as it is and not look at is a restriction or hindrance to what they want to do. We need to make our decisions and choices considering the morality of the act and what our conscience, which is the vicar of Jesus in our soul is telling us. Thank you for shedding some light on us, Fr. Barron! God Bless You!

The message of this video is especially significant in today's society, where the conscience is seen just as a voice formed by society, and something that is easily ignored. The conscience is often drowned out by the thousands of voices that tempt young people, myself included, to do things besides what is moral. I can easily relate to what father Barron said about the uniquely rewarding feeling and the uniquely punishing shame that conscience brings about. Through the video, I learned that we cannot reduce the conscience to just a voice, when it is something so powerful and clear. Father Barron has helped me to realise the importance of recognising my moral obligation to properly form and to constantly obey my conscience. I can make it a point to pray everyday for the grace to hear and follow that little voice inside of me. Thanks for this video!

Thank You, Father Barron because from the video, I learned that since conscience is the aboriginal vicar of Christ in the soul. Conscience rewards us whenever we do the right thing. It is the voice which tells the wrong from right. So we, as children of God must see to it to hear the whisper of the conscience to lead us to do good things. A person is defined by the things he values. So in the video, I learned that we have to value important things because we are named by this. Like Elijah, since he values God, vey much, it is very evident in not only his name but his character. Things of little value such as material things should not define us but rather higher spiritual values. There are a lot of voices telling us to follow what its saying but we have to pay more attention to the right whisper of our conscience. Especially nowadays, that we are very much inclined to peer pressure and what most of our generation does which may not be morally correct and sound.

I agree with you that there are other voices that make it difficult for teens such as myself to distinguish what is actually morally right and what is morally wrong. Because of the type of culture we have now, teens get easily influenced by the ideas the media portrays as the "right" ones. And so, these are the ideas a teen's conscience is based on. They should understand that we have to try hard to find that voice that is God's because he teaches us truly what is right and what we should follow. If only they knew this, they can live lives of holiness and worship to God. Thank you so much for sharing your ideas with us, Fr. Barron!

Thank you Father Barron for sharing your enlightening insights about conscience and morality. I definitely agree that conscience is the "tiny whispering voice" which can be ignored due to the other one thousand voices competing for attention as well. This video made me realize that although it is very hard to listen to that "tiny voice", I need to pay attention to it because it is the voice which will help me recognize the right from wrong and vise versa. Now, I have a very clear understanding of conscience especially when it comes to applying it to our daily lives. Thank you again and God Bless!

Thank you for uploading the video, it is absolutely inspiring. The youth today sees conscience and morality as the voice that limits themselves from "having fun" which is nothing like it. Conscience and Morality go hand in hand that does not limit the amount of fun that people can have but it helps us grow closer to God and when done properly, we can have fun in the process. Our conscience only tells us the effects of what's wrong and what's right while Morality is what tells us if it's wrong or right. Without morality, there won't be any peace in the world. Without peace, we cannot enjoy. Thank you for the inspiring message!

Being part of a generation wherein there are many factors that have the ability to cloud our sense of morality, this video has been of great help. It is true that nowadays, we tend to listen to the voices of so many things or people around us that we forget to listen to the most important voice, which is God's voice inside us. I really liked the part wherein you said that "our conscience places us in the presence of someone we love" because this is where I saw the essential connection between conscience and morality."Someone we love" here refers to God and from this, we see that actions that are morally right make us feel happy, because we know that these actions are pleasing to God. Meanwhile, actions that are morally wrong make us feel sad and heavy inside, because we know that these actions are not pleasing to God. Thank you, Father Barron for posting this video and for clarifying the connection between conscience and morality, especially for us youth!

This is a great video Fr. Barron. Your video can help alot of troubled people out there since many of them are in need of God's guidance. People need to realize that they should not do things on their own without listening to their conscience. If people do not listen to their conscience, they are constantly ignoring the inner "God" inside of us. I hope people realize how lucky they even are to be gifted with something so special and unique to only us, humans. They should show their gratitude by at least listening to their conscience. I hope your video makes an impact on everyone else like it did to me.

I agree, Father Barron. What we value most is usually what our lives revolve around. This video helped me realize that I have not been putting God in the center in my life, but I should. Also, thank you for enlightening us about conscience which is the aboriginal vicar of Christ in the soul. I realized that I have to listen to that "little voice" that internally guides me in my life even if I may be surrounded by people who would contradict it. Of course, I have to make sure I have a sound conscience which will help me perform good moral acts. Thank you so much for sharing this knowledge with us.

Thank you Father Barron for what you've shared. You insights about conscience really gave me a new perspective about it. I realised that it isn't something to overlook but rather something to pay attention to. Your video has also helped me keep in mind that our conscience becomes a reminder that tells us that we should include God's voice and/or Will in every decision that we make. It really seems as though in every minute of our lives, God intends to direct us towards the Good. This then gives me comfort knowing that Christ is with me at all times. Again, you have my thanks. Thank you, Father Barron for this enlightening video on conscience and morality. I now realize that conscience helps us have a stronger moral foundation because it leads us to do good if we listen to it and if we train it to teach us what is according to God’s will. This video helped me understand that conscience is the tiny whispering voice that is hard to hear because of the many voices in our heads that are much louder, such as the criticisms of what society thinks of us. But, if we listen to our conscience and do accordingly, we will be “rewarded in an absolutely unique way.” However, if we go against it, it will “punish us in an absolutely unique way.” Conscience is also the “aboriginal Vicar of Christ” in our soul, which is why I should learn to value and listen to my conscience more.

Hi Father Barron! After watching your video, I learned that there is a difference between the voices in your head that talked about your senses and emotions and the voice of the original Vicar of Christ in my soul which is the conscience. I also did not realize that conscience is not just a voice in your head telling you what is right and wrong but also a powerful voice that represents Christ in my soul. I was happy that I was able to figure this out because now I will have more confidence when I listen to my conscience and that I know it is not merely a voice but rather it is a voice that is in the presence of someone I love. I now know that the conscience is something that tells us what to do and what not to do for that person whom we love. I am grateful for being able to learn more about conscience through your video! Thank you because it can make me a better Catholic by making sure that I learn more about my conscience which gives me a straight and correct guide to live a life for Christ despite the many distractions from society today. Thank you Father Barron for this eye- opening video! Your enlightening words made me realize that the conscience is not just that little voice or angel vs. devil battle we see in the movies. Rather, it is a connection we have with God. This is a very important teaching that the youth must know, considering the many distracting voices in our minds and hearts, so that we may be guided towards the moral truth. There have been many occasions when I would simply give in to these voices because of social pressure.I have come to realize that I need to be more discerning of the voices and noises around me so that I may make good decisions and become the person God has destined me to be.

Thank you Fr.Barron for posting this video. It is only now that I have completely realized the power of our conscience. The conscience, as you have said, is the "voice" telling you whether an action is right or wrong. Different from our sensibility, the conscience places us in "the presence of someone we love." I have never thought of conscience in this way. I have always been told or taught that by following the right path, I am representing a "good person." Instead, this video taught me that when we do a morally right action, we are rewarded by our conscience or we please someone we love. Additionally, if we commit sin or make a bad decision we feel shame. This shame is rooted in the "disappointment of someone we love." This represents the contact with God. Now, I see the connection between God and my conscience in a clear relationship. Our conscience can be drowned out with all the other voices, but I now understand that by strengthening this bond with God, I will continue to be morally right. Again, thank you so much for this video!

Father Barron, this talk helped me realize how the conscience, being given by God, is actually his voice in us. I realize that when I do something that my conscience was telling me is right, then not only am I pleasing myself, but even my Father in Heaven as well. Sometimes, I may try to disregard the voice of my conscience, but after watching this, I know I must never do so because this will bring me to the right path of morality. All our decisions should be in accord with our conscience, to be pleasing to God. This video has given me a new outlook on my actions, thank you very much Father Barron!

It made me realize that conscience is always the one speaking to us on whether our action is right or wrong. Although it is sometimes hard for us to follow the good that our conscience is telling us to, we should always try to follow it for the love of God and for our greater selves. After watching this video, I immediately contemplated and reflected on the question-- "What is my highest value?" and then realized that I have failed to always put God first. You made me realize that I should value God and that I should always listen to this "aboriginal vicar of Christ in the soul"; my conscience. This powerful and clear conscience that tells me right from wrong; that either rewards me if I do something morally right or punishes me when I do something morally wrong. Because of this, I will always take the time to listen to my conscience when faced with obstacles that require decision-making. Thank you Father for the very enlightening video about conscience and morality. I had never really given much acknowledgment towards my conscience since as you said, it was a tiny voice compared to the other voices competing for my attention. The part about the conscience making us feel different emotions when we do something morally right or wrong gave me goosebumps because that is so true. The conscience really makes me feel like I have a divine parent in my head judging me for my actions. Your video gave me a realization how much morality and conscience go hand-in-hand since when I do something morally wrong, the voice would chide me but when I do something morally right, it will reward me. When I thought about Elijah listening to that one voice at Mt. Sinai, it made me admire him so much because he could easily hear his conscience and I want to be able to do that as well. Listening to my conscience will help enforce me to become a better person so that I can be closer to God. Thank you so much again, Father for uploading this video to enlighten so many of us, youths, again about our conscience and how important it is to listen to it.

Thank you very much Fr. Barron for your insights on Conscience and Morality! At present, we (the youth in particular) take our conscience for granted and tend to dismiss what our conscience tells us what is right and what is wrong. But you have reminded me and certainly several others to follow our conscience and to be like the Prophet Elijah, who listened to that tiny whispering voice, to make good decisions for ourselves and to not listen to the several outside voices that may stray us away from making good decisions. I believe that your video will help me and the youth to avoid shame through our thoughts and actions and to really allow our conscience to place us in the presence of someone that we love. It really makes sense how you said that when the conscience rewards you, you get the happy feeling like when you please someone you love. And the opposite for when your conscience punishes you. From this, I realize how important it is to listen to my conscience because it is my personal contact with God who guides me to follow his teachings. Im very glad I watched this video and I'm looking forward to watching more! God bless you!

Hi Father Barron! Thank you so much for sharing this with us. I think this video is very helpful to me because of my situation nowadays. Im also exposed to many different people who tell me to do this and that so it has always been a challenge to discern what is right from wrong. After watching this it has opened my eyes to pay attention more to what my conscience is telling me. As you said, the conscience is the aboriginal vicar of Christ, and i know that my conscience will bring me closer to God and to bring me closer to becoming a better child of God. I have been thinking of ways so that the little voice i hear, which is known as my conscience, may be heard louder. Perhaps i can go to confession more, seek spiritual guidance, and pray more. After watching this video, I realized that there is much more to the conscience than we think. Conscience is not just merely something to be overlooked but it is something very important and something we have to listen to. This is very important for the youth to know because sometimes we forget to listen to our conscience due to the many voices coming from the outside (like parents, peers, teachers, and many more). Thank you for reminding us this because now when I make a decision, I can be reminded that our conscience is not just merely a random voice, but the voice of God. The conscience is something that is really important. Through this video, I also understood that the conscience is different from the other feelings that we may feel at certain moments in our lives. The conscience is not just the feelings I may feel about a certain decision, it is, in fact, the Vicar of Christ in the soul. This video is something that the youth should most especially watch because it is something that our generation needs as of now. There are many things that can make one person ignore his or her own conscience and these things can include family, friends, peers, and society. This video taught me that I must not give in to the others and instead, I should listen to my conscience because my conscience is God leading me to the right path. I should listen to my conscience more because, through my conscience, I can make better decisions and become the person God has destined and wants me to be. I definitely learned a lot from this video and I hope to be able to apply this in my daily life.

Thank you, Fr. Robert Barron for this enlightening video! I definitely agree with what you said about conscience. It's that tiny whispering voice that we all recognize which rewards us in his absolutely unique way when we have done something generously kind and Godly and at the same time punishes us in that unique way when we have done something against God's will. After watching this video, I have realized that sometimes I tend to listen to the other voices when I should be listening and paying attention to that one "little voice" coming from God. I have clearly understood what conscience really is. Like what was mentioned from the video, Elijah had a great grace to be able to hear that voice, but the problem is conscience can be ignored because there are thousand voices competing for attention. I have realized that I need to be aware in listening to that "tiny whispering voice" which will guide me to make the right decisions in life and to find myself in greater union with Christ. Thank you again for sharing this video to us!

Thank you for posting this video, Fr. Barron. We, as Catholics find this very relevant in our lives. Growing up as a teenager, I feel that we're at a certain point in our lives where morality and conscience especially gets questioned a lot and thanks to this very insightful video, I now understand how my morality affects my conscience and how my decisions made through my conscience come from my morals.

Thank you Father Barron for this video because I finally understood the importance of my conscience. I never knew that my conscience was God because as what you said people at my age have a lot of distractions that keep us from hearing our conscience. Before, I never knew my conscience was important but because of your video I realized it was God talking to me. Everyone should realized that they need to have a quiet moment and listen to their conscience when they make decisions. Thank you so much again Father Barron.

Thank you Fr. Barron for making me realize how powerful the human conscience could be! I never saw my conscience as the "Vicar of Chist in the soul" - how beautiful! I really like what you said about the feeling of doing something morally right is like the feeling of pleasing someone whom we love. Through this video, I have learned that it truly is important to pay attention to the tiny voice I hear in my head because it is actually God who is talking to me. I shouldn't ignore my conscience because as you've said in this video, I should not want to feel ashamed of my actions. From now on, I will make sure to listen to my conscience at all times so that I won't have anything to be ashamed of and also so that I won't make the same mistake in the future. Thank you for enlightening me, Fr. Barron! God Bless!

Thank you Fr. Barron for your inspiring video about Conscience and Morality! Your video helped me realize that conscience is something so essential to my life as a Catholic. It also helped me realize that in order to live my life according to God's will, I have to listen to my conscience because it will guide me to the right path. I acknowledge that it may be difficult at times because what is right may not necessarily be what I want to do, but I now know that conscience is Jesus' voice in our minds telling us what to do and who to follow. Thank you for helping me understand how important it is to do what is morally right with the help of my conscience. Your video will inspire many people to make the same realizations as well. Thank you Father Barron for an enlightening lesson of the Conscience. As part of the youth, there is a constant pressure to fit in to what is 'cool' in society, pressures from parents to be the best students and daughters, pressures from ourselves to be someone we aspire to be at a certain planned point in life. You teach me that although there are so many voices that lure me to all of these pressures the voice that I must be responding to is my conscience because it is my conscience that will lead me to become the best version of myself or the person that God planned me to be. In the bottom of my heart, I myself don't know who I am or capable of becoming and by this confusion, I could fall to 'lose my soul'. Thank you for teaching me that I can be my best self or make the best decisions by following my conscience. God Bless!

Thank you Father Barron for shedding light on the topic of conscience and morality. You really made me realize how important my conscience is, and you make me want to take more care of it. I especially loved how you differentiated it from other feelings that I have. My conscience is not just me being feeling good or bad with the decisions I make, but it is the voice of God in me because it places me in His presence, and as Cardinal Newman said, it truly is "the Vicar of Christ in the soul." As a teenager growing up in this century, it is difficult to listen to my conscience because there are so many other voices telling me what to do. However, your video reminds me that I must not give in to these voices, and listen to my own conscience because it will lead me to the right path. Thank you again. I really appreciate it!

I especially liked how you compared the conscience to the way we may hurt or please someone we love and how it truly is God's voice within us. You really reminded us to listen to that tiny voice in our heads especially as we are at a time when music and "noise" may keep us from listening to God. You have also reminded me to take some time off from all the "noise" in our lives and to just sit down and listen to what God has to say. Thank you for this video, Fr. Barron. This is relevant most especially for the youth because it is true that conscience is something that can be ignored, and is in fact ignored by many of us in a lot of situations. In teenager's worlds at present, there are those thousand other voices around them that for a fact hinder them from listening to what their conscience is telling them. Our conscience is the inner voice from God, telling us what to do and what not to do. Hence, our conscience is the one thing we should follow. For every reason we have not to follow it, there is always an even greater reason to follow it. Thank you again for taking your time to share your thoughts with everyone. God Bless!

Thankyou Father Baron for sharing such a profound and insightful video about conscience and morality. Through watching your video I have realized that my conscience is a vicar of Christ from my soul. The little voice I hear in my head that requires me to follow my morals is the voice I should listen to in order to follow the right path that God sets for me. Especially with the temptations that is present within my society today, it is easy to lose track of what path I should follow in order to find God. I realized that when I use my conscience wisely, I am able to be in the presence of God and please Him at the end of the day. I am able to see that God's love is really eternal and perpetual because He gives us this tiny voice in our head to lead us to Him and eternal happiness.

Thank you so much for this video, Fr. Barron!! It's helped me so much to realize that we SHOULD listen to our conscience and not drown it out, ignore it or push it away. It's that voice always telling us to do what's right so as to lead us to become the best people we can be because we do good and not evil. It's the voice of the Father leading us to the path he wants us to go to. Since it is His voice, I know to not reduce the conscience to those things (hang ups or repressions). You've made me realize how important my conscience is since we young people are becoming mislead and we need to follow God's path once more. The conscience is so powerful so we must use the power it has to do good. I see the difference between feelings about doing something good or bad ARE different FROM THE FEELING OF DOING MORAL ACTS based on one's conscience. I know now the vital role my conscience has in the development of myself to strive to be truly good. Thank you for that, Fr. Barron! :)

You so properly distinguished between the voice of God (conscience) and the thousands of other voices that are calling out to people. One nourishes the soul, and the other loses it. We have become susceptible to falling into the trap of listening and obeying those other voices, but it's reassuring to know that there is still a powerful little voice within us that rules above all.

Feeling ashamed when we disregard our conscience is a sign that we young ones have to realize is wrong. By listening to our conscience, we will be able to make well-informed and well-thought out decisions. I think it is essential to our lives (the youth) for this is the age wherein we will be going through a lot of decisions like college, future career, etc. We all need to listen to God's whisper in order for us to hear his plans, what he wants for us, and how we should decide on things. I have parents and teachers who express their ambitions for my future, friends who influence my priorities, and the media which portrays an artificial way of life. However, you reminded me not to drown the voice of the conscience, because it is God’s voice in me. It is a voice so distinct and powerful that it cannot be suppressed because it presses emotions of reward or guilt upon me. I learned that these effects come about because the conscience places me in the presence of someone I love. Thus, I am reminded to form a good conscience to please God, and stop disappointing Him.

Thank you so much for this video, Fr. Barron! My ideas about conscience and morality were a bit unclear prior to this video. However, I'm grateful that this video has helped shape my thoughts and understand that conscience isn't just a voice in our head, like Jiminy Cricket from Pinocchio; it is actually the voice of God guiding us through our paths. It makes so much sense that out conscience gets plagued as we continue to sin without going to confession for His grace. I really enjoyed your re-telling of the story of Elijah, as I am not very familiar with the Old Testament. I believe that we should be like Elijah in the sense that we put God before all things - just as the first Commandment states. Also, that beliefs shapes character, which is something that I will always remember to live by. Lastly, I learned that the Old Testament is compatible with the teachings of the New Testament. This has definitely inspired me to pick up the Bible and not skip through the OT! Thank you so much, once again, for the enlightening video. God bless!

Thank you for posting this video! When I watched the video, I was immediately struck with how you started it. You connected how one can tell a lot about someone based on what he regards as his highest value. When you used this introduction, it hooked me to watch the whole video as you flawlessly shifted to the topic of conscience and morality. When you described conscience as the ‘aboriginal vicar of Christ on the soul,’ I immediately opened to the idea because conscience is a small voice at the back of the head that commends the rightness of an action or chastises the wrongness of the action. It is a powerful voice that places man ‘shame’ when he does something wrong because the feeling of ‘being ashamed’ and ‘betraying’ someone important is whispered to man. You also mentioned the fact that there are voices competing for man’s attention that influences man to he ignore the voice. But what I liked most about the video is your simple explanation of conscience and its importance. You related the topic to ordinary activities or objects that people can relate to.

And as you said, it has the ability to "place us in the presence of someone that we love", so we must learn to hear it out and to follow whatever it tells us to do, instead of ignoring it or turning away. I have to admit, the idea I had about conscience before watching this video was somewhat polar from what you discussed. Personally, I thought that my conscience was the spiritual equivalent of my natural survival instinct, that if I didn't follow it, I wouldn't be able to get by as a human being. I listened to that voice in a selfish light, only following it to avoid more trouble on my end. To me, it was all about me. However, your video clarified this misconception. In your words, the conscience puts us in the presence of someone we love, which introduces the concept of shame. If someone I loved had witnessed all the times I rebelled against that inner voice, I would definitely feel ashamed and would resolve to follow that voice out of a desire to avoid shame and achieve honor. Ultimately, that "someone [I] love" is Him, and I now know that the act of following one's conscience is an act of humility and obedience towards God. Thanks for clarifying this and leading me in the right direction. Godspeed!

I agree with you, Father Barron that the conscience is more than just our parents' voices and the norms of society. Our conscience is our great connection with God because, as you said, it is His voice. However, just as in Elija's situation, God's voice, or our conscience, is so small. It may sometimes be inaudible because of all the external voices of our environment. Thank you for clearly pointing out what the conscience really is. As part of the youth, we often end up falling for external pressure from our surroundings rather than listening to the voice of God. This only shows us that we really have to strive to hear our conscience more than anything because this will not only lead us to God, but to our true vocation as well.

This video is a tremendous insight. I think the key to having any kind of spiritual success in this life is learning to listen to, and follow that "still, small, voice." Those who fall away from God (meaning: all of us) can find their way back if they remember the spiritual experiences in their life and recognize that internal vicar or "The Light of Christ" pointing them the way home.

Hello Father! While I was watching this video, I started thinking of my situation as a high school student and how I always find my conscience at odds with itself. With so many external factors (like family, peers, media, and society) influencing me, it's hard to discern what I must believe in and how I must act. As you said however, through God's grace, each one of us has been enlightened with that voice of reason, enabling us to know between what is moral or not. We have to be careful though, because if we mistakenly listen to the wrong "voice", we might end up on the wrong moral path and ultimately lose ourselves in the process. So, I will take your advice and try my best to listen to that one, correct voice. Thank you!

Thank you, Fr. Barron, for that very enlightening discussion! The way you talked about the workings of the that voice we all hear in us, namely the conscience, truly concluded what I learned for the term and made me realize how everything that we do always goes back to that. Also, the way you talked about Elijah has prompted me strive to be like him or at least strive for the relationship he has with God. I wish that I will be able to hear the voice of God as clear as he did and that my actions revere Him always. I just have a question, however, father. How can one feel bad but not ashamed? What does the conscience do to him then? Thank you once again and I hope that you are well! :)

I would indeed argue that certain fundamental moral values are self-evident and are recognized as such, either implicitly or explicitly, by every culture on earth. The trouble with making morality simply a matter of cultural consensus is that we'd have no real ground for saying that, say, Hitler's Germany was morally bankrupt. If it's all simply a matter of societal conventions, then we fall into complete moral relativism.

It really struck me when you said that what we worship defines who we are. Also, I've never connected the story of Elijah with the matters of conscience and morality the way you did. However, I do have one concern. Are you then saying that the conscience is always right? I have been taught that the conscience is a human act and that human acts can be wrong. I do agree that the cause for taking on a life of worshipping sex, pleasure, or material belongings is the act of ignoring our conscience but I maintain my opinion that the conscience is not always correct. In addition to this, I believe that the conscience that always leads us to do right can only be obtained through the education of morality. Thank you again, Father Barron for this thought-provoking video.
