Can you imagine Bishop Barron as the next pope? I know it won't happen, but he speaks with such clarity and erudition about the faith that he could lead a revival all by himself. I'm not much of a Catholic anymore, but every time I listen to him speak, his thoughtful intellectual-philosophical approach always tugs at me and teases me to give it all another try.

Look at the lives of St. Patrick, who went from slave to laying the foundation of the once great Irish Church, or how about St. Joan of Arc, a 17 year old girl with no military training who led the French to victory over the English occupation and regained their independence. Who would have predicted Pope Francis? With God, all things are possible.

I absolutely agree! I do pray for him. God has gifted him and blessed him and the devil HATES that! Even the greatest of men have "clay feet" and pride is our great internal enemy, but Satan certainly is the Evil One on the outside. I pray that Jesus protect Bishop Barron from both. I think he absolutely dropped the ball in the Ben Shapiro interview when he simply said that people outside the Faith could go to heaven. That is a growing and persistent position within our compromised episcopacy that the Catholic Faith is just one legitimate religion among many. Neither Bishop Barron nor many others will face the media with the Truth that no one wants to hear. Unless one accepts Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and follows God's law he or she will not get into heaven. "Not everyone who says Lord, Lord, will enter the Kingdom of Heaven but only those who follow the Will of my Heavenly Father." The good Bishop doesn't seem to believe this, and if he does he doesn't have the courage or prudent discernment to say that to a non-believer to his face.

I was raised Mormon but I converted to Catholicism in my twenties. I suspect that lots of Catholics leave because there is not much sense of community within any Catholic parish church I have ever attended. The Mormon church, which is certainly nonsense, has a much better sense of community and belonging. When I first went to my local Catholic Church the priest reluctantly gave me catechise; the parishioners were nonplussed about my conversion- as though it was something bizarre-; and almost no one welcomed me at all. The Catholic Church demands so much of its baptised members- and yet there is not much of a community to support those who want to be signs of contradiction.

The Catholic Church has a priestly hierarchy so nothing gets done without the approval of the hierarchy and unfortunatley they tend not to like change- and, moreover, they tend not to like the interference of the 'mere' laity. It seems to me that the laity need to be given more responsibility by the hierarchy.

My seven children are all devout Catholics. Six of them have two or more college degrees. I taught them at home with the St. Joseph revised Baltimore catechism. I am so grateful that they really know their faith from that little series of books. I did not think the CCD books in my parish were adequate. We also prayed the Rosary every night together.

Yes, they want to feel the Gospels, not just read them. Bishop Barron has the Bible (I got New Testament) where you have readings, but also commentary from him and other theologians and priests and saints. Gorgeous photos/paintings also.

Be great if they followed the instructions Jesus left us. Most churches are concerned with the material goods (money, fancy suits and big churches) and people see it. If you know Jesus, that is the exact opposite of what he teaches. OUR Job as Human beings, is to care for other Humans.. pretty simple. The church is concerned with taking care of the Church.

Not everyone wants that, you don't need Latin to want Jesus, to feel him, to want the Eucharist. Tongue/hand shouldn't be a topic of discourse. It becomes semantics and "I like bells and rails and I like this and that" Mother Theresa didn't care if she had the Latin mass or gorgeous church like most convents. It's nice to have things to help you focus etc but it's not the church.

I am in my 60s I was brought up a Catholic then I converted to Mormon when I was 18 years because it gave me a sense of community. From 30 I became disillusioned and agnostic until recently - I want to reconnect with my Catholic faith. But I went to church twice and found it mechanical lacking divine inspiration and very lonely - my sister had a similar experience. This is what the Catholic Church needs to address to attract people back. It needs to give all Catholics a sense of purpose by being part of a Catholic community. Not compromise it’s teachings to attract people but stand up for the true faith and it’s theology.

Hi. I 100% feel this. I'll spare the details on my reversion, but I found that once I changed my perspective about the church, my perspective changed also IN the church. I didn't manage to do it alone though. Reading Rome Sweet Home helped me a lot because it addresses exactly what you're talking about. Then also helpful was the podcast from Ascension by Edward Sri 'A Biblical Walk Through the Mass'. If you can possibly listen to that, I think it would help a lot. Or even search Father Mike Schmitz's talks here on you tube from Ascension Presents. He has a truly inspired way of explaining things. In fact, "Pray the Mass Like Never Before" is a video here on you tube from SEEK 2019, also Father Mike. God Bless You

@@user-yb5gg2yv3g No, please no. I grew with the Latin Mass. There was no more sense of belonging then than today. However, I also grew up in the Ukrainian Catholic Byzantine Rite. The Ukrainian “ Divine Liturgy “ has always been in the vernacular, that is, in Ukrainian. Nothing changed in that Rite after Vatican II except for the removal of the Communion rail. That was a bonus for the Priests, who had to bend down to drop the Eucharist from a spoon into the communicants mouth. It required constant bending the entire way. Married priests, facing the altar during Mass, no female altar servers - still the same. The big difference was the language. Even though my Mom spoke Ukrainian and we lived with my immigrant Grandfather ( my Gigi ), my English father would not permit us to learn Ukrainian - he felt we would be confused when we went to English School. The difference between the two languages that I did not understand at either Mass was that Ukrainian was spoken all around me. And we sang Ukrainian songs and lullabies to all the babies. We understood a bit. So it was the language that surrounded me all my life. It was comforting to hear. It was a language that was alive, unlike Latin ( which I studied in High School ) which was a dead language. It may be the Official Language of the Catholic Church, but it was not translated from the 4 centuries of Greek because it was in some way “ holier “. It was translated so that the Roman Converts could understand what was being said. In other words, it was changed to the vernacular - the Latin Vulgate.

You can become involved in the Church in many ways. The CWL, bible study classes, the K of C, volunteers for coffee after Mass. Many ways to serve and meet people and feel a sense of community. But you have to make a choice to get involved. Help or start a children’s liturgy. Join the choir. Volunteer as a lector. . I have done many of these things, including playing the piano - but I was a pianist. Met many people who have become great friends. And I moved from a different city where I knew and was involved with my family and relatives. It was difficult at first, but became easier. Many ways to become more involved and feel part of the community of believers.,

As a born-again Catholic with a profound conversion 16 years ago during a pilgrimage where God intervened to save my marriage, I agree with Bishop Barron wholeheartedly that our hearts long for Christ, and nothing will satisfy them beyond the materials and pleasure of this world. I led a promiscuous life before my conversion, with frequent visits to strip clubs and red districts. After God transformed my hardened heart, I felt the joy and love in my beyond this world. I asked Jesus that I would accept any suffering, including leprosy, as reparations for my sins because my love for the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate of Mary grew exponentially. I would rather die than divorce my wife, knowing that it would offend God greatly. I pray for others to receive the same grace of conversion to see the sacredness of marriage between a man and a woman and the sanctity of life from conception to natural death.

@Heart_on_Fire1 Why do you use the term "Born-again" rather than devout Catholic? That's a typical non-Catholic cliché to differentiate between true vs fake Christians, and to mean "having really been saved". But in reality it's just a label, and it doesn't mean anything more than just having being baptized. The true renewal of heart and spirit is a conscious process everyone indistinctly has to go through. For a happy marriage it takes two to tango! ☺

​@@therealong I beg to differ. Born-again has to do with a profound transformation or metanoia in a person's life, like St. Paul with his 180-degree conversion. I was a lukewarm Catholic living a life far away from God, leading a promiscuous life, so it would not be possible to change that lifestyle without God's intervention. A renounced exorcist Fr. Carlos Martinez said that it would take 75 exorcist sessions or 1.5 years to drive out that kind of demonic sexual sin possession. A devout Catholic is a term that typically describes a religious person going to Church often and may have a gradual conversion but not drastic transformation.

Every mass is valid though, some like more bells and whistles and others are there for the Eucharist. Most convents and places have simple churches, they didn't need the incense (which bothers my lungs) the Latin that they don't understand, heart is Jesus. Whatever makes you feel closer is great, but you are making the other things matter. I think that is what Pope Francis meant and John Paul ll with the Latin mass, it's fine but not "better". You can't idolize a mass to the point where you say I wont go if I don't have it, I'll move, etc. I see that online. It's subtle but the type of mass becomes more important.

I grew up in the NO, attended Catholic school through high school. The Traditional mass saved me and continues to feed my soul. Yes, the NO consecration is valid for now (unless the rubrics change), but the new mass has led to loss of faith for so many. Look at the drop in vocations, attendance and Catholics that don't believe in the true presence. My heart aches to see so called politicians call themselves Catholic yet they actively follow satanic views like abortion.😢 Jesus said " judge a tree by it's fruits". I just want us to go back to following Jesus and His Apostolic tradition.

@@deb9806 different attracts, happens at different churches, retreats, WYD type of events, priests know it wont last if the core isn't there. If you are centered with the Lord, it doesn't matter if it's NO or Latin or Orthodox, just like some poorer convents don't have elaborate masses, they don't need it. They have a valid simple mass with Christ.

I know from my own experience, that the heart becomes restless with anything less than God. I tried turning away for various reasons (doubts about Church, not the Faith ) and was always unsatisfied until the inner spiritual journey in Christ began, and I was enabled to understand the Church differently. Thanks be to God that B. Barron is alive to this need especially in the young at this time when media focuses on negativity and superficiality much . CMJ

The church is sitting on a gold mine of spirituality and now people are starting to realise it. There are great times ahead for those whom believe in Jesus Christ. Regardless of whether your local bishop snaps out of his slumber or not. The thing I am discovering as I look into the Protestant churches is how much they own their religion. It will exist only through the efforts of the laity. And they are passionate about their faiths. If only we could combine the love of the eucharist with the love of scripture and worshipful and vibrant singing like Hillsong does.

I loved your comment that we are sitting on a goldmine of spirituality. But the last thing we need to do is introduce anything Protestant. Protestants are not as solid as you might believe. They constantly church hop. There are over 40,000 registered Protestant churches in the US alone, all with different beliefs. There is still only one true Catholic Church, and that is by the grace of God alone. We have the fullness of faith. I agree there is a problem but we must expect more from our young people to use discern and we need to be the example for them.

@@ruthgilmour8399 I am not advocating for Protestantism, just their passion. A couple of thoughts on this is that, pre Vatican 2 has music that was music, memorable, moving, uplifting, special. Since Vatican 2 the music has been rubbish. The second thing is that it is far better to listen to Hillsong and Christian music than Taylor Swift of Beyonce. And that's exactly what our youth are listening to. We are in a spiritual war and need all the help we can get

At some point our society fostered secularism and continued to try to make government and its leaders our God. It's not been working and won't because the hunger is for something/someone beyond. I look at how the young get hyped up about climate change for example. They want to believe and make a change for what they think is good, but it's still about mankind having all the power instead of something/someone bigger than they are. Their energy isn't channeled to what can really matter. Maybe that's what youth is all about, and maturity has to kick in at some point to be able to say something like "Is this all there really is?" And then search for what's already in the heart but was hidden.

I see more young people, ages 18 through 36, recent converts, at the Tridentine parish I now belong to, than I have seen in my life and I was a child the last years before Vatican II. Youth are drawn to the Truth, love for the Blessed sacrament, the sacrament of Confession (We have lines every week) but also the perfection of the worship, the mysterious beauty of Gregorian chant, the virtues, and the hard truths spoken from the pulpit by manly priests. We have 30altar boys who have memorized the Latin responses beginning at age 7. When you see converts in their 20s and 30s staying to pray after the Holy Mass then you know what is missing in "young people's lives: God the mysterious whose love gives them hope and faith in these troubling and lonely times.

Why don't you get deep into the Vatican II's documents and learn the deep meaning of every single part of today's Ordinary Mass, and then explain it to these youths you refer to. Let's see if they return or have other things in their head not to have time to attend for just 30 minutes time. The CCC §166 explains in very few words what the real problem might be...

The explosion of the sources of spiritual sustenance means that people can find a route to the Divine source in many ways. I love the beauty in Catholicism. What many deep thinking people baulk at is having to simply accept a catechism of worked out answers; people are more sophisticated these days. I'm also not welcome as a gay man, so that avenue is blocked anyway. The crazy thing is I already have a relationship with God, so completely agree with Bishop Barron: nothing will satisfy until we find our source in God ❤.

You said you would not be welcome as a gay man. Do not assume that. We have a gay man at our Parrish. Everyone knows about it and nobody cares. He is a nice guy. He has many friends at our church. I do not know if he lives his gay lifestyle. We are all sinners, gay or straight. But we are also children of God who loves all of us. Try out attending a Catholic church, and “if” you feel not welcome, try another. It will be worth it.

The catechism is a distillation of all the knowledge and wisdom of a 2000 year tradition. If people want to go deeper they are always welcome to read the Summa Theologiae, the works of Saint Augustine and other foundational documents. But if we're being honest, they can't be bothered to read the catechism itself let alone the richer documents that it is based upon, but they reason that their skepticism of church teachings is a sign sophistication and not of ignorance.

I have two kids, both PhD students, who would like to meet other young people of faith and to find a spouse, but there is no where to find other young people of fatih. At the mass? Nope. They go to church, and everyone walks out at the end. Where is the opportunity to meet and talk? Please, Catholic Church, go to where the people are and address some of their real social/emotional needs... like the need to make friends, meet spouses, etc.. Create events/venues for young people to meet and greet. And for the lonely elderly as well. And for the moms/dads who want to meet other moms/dads. BE a part of the congregation's community.

Bishop Baron - thank you for consistently providing a level of Catechesis that we’d be hard pressed to get anywhere else. Your comments on the impact the Catholic online KZbin and other Social Media evangelists are having is tremendous. I am less certain of the impact the Eucharistic Revival is having. I’m in the Diocese of El Paso TX and have not seen much that is tangible and centered in catechizing Mass attendees that aren’t in OCIA. Our Tabernacles in many cases are not in the Sanctuary; there doesn’t seem to be an effort, sustained or otherwise, to catechize the Mass faithful on the Eucharist, reverence to the Tabernacle, attendance at Adoration, kneeling during the Eucharistic Prayer when the Blessed Sacrament is present / exposed, remaining kneeling through purification of the Sacred Vessels, understanding when the consecration / transformation takes place, a focus on the link between the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Communion to name a few shortcomings. I haven’t been to Mass across the Diocese, but have a baseline set of observations from the churches I have attended Mass at. I fear we are going to miss an opportunity while people crave Spirituality. Thank you again.

I think every human, at their base level core self, always longs to have a connection with something/s that will show them honest unconditional love and understanding. When people have a foundation to believe in, they live for a purpose greater than themselves because they know they are supported. It's true. The church needs to propose a challenge to young people, not bend over backwards to make us more comfortable with lessened requirements for catechism, fasting and prayer. Bishop Barron is a gift. I am in the camp that thinks he needs to become bolder. We need shepherds who will act and speak with the authority of the Apostles, which the bishops have. There is a part of the current order the Church cannot be cordial and cerebral with.

St. Francis was the ultimate environmentalist who understood the Divine in the world we inhabit. I am a lifelong member of the Mormon church, and currently in my own "Faith crisis", as it's referred to. When Bishop Barron says, we need to challenge their intellect, we need to challenge their understanding, that is why they leave, because we don't challenge them. My Mormon tradition has so watered down, sanitized and tightly correlated the curriculum that any sense of spiritual expansion is trapped inside the need to constantly confirm what has already been decided. The Mormon church has great community, and a dreadful and fearful learning environment. I wish our LDS leadership, like Bishop Barron, would be more broadly read, intertwining philosophy, psychology, theology, and science into our sermons and faith experience. Instead, we have this extremely stale concept that we gain a personal testimony of someone else's mystical experience.

Show the youth the Latin Mass and they will experience a renewal in their spirituality. I was at a college in Texas and our parish was the Newman Center for the College. They started exploring the Latin Masses offered in Dallas and Ft worth and suddenly the girls are wearing Veils, receiving communion kneeling on the tongue with no rail. A new sense of reverence was seen in the Novus Ordo Mass and the Local Parish Priest doesnt know what to think of it. The Novus Ordo was supposed all inovative and attract the youth but it did not work. They are saying we got cheated with guitars and kum bayah they want substance.

Some people might need to go back to traditional mass. But to me it is not the Latin mass that makes a holy man of me but the holy man comes from within me. There is much truth in that, but you have a maturity in your faith that the youth have not developed yet I personally can no longer tolerate the NO I am 60 years old now I have 1 child of 8 that attends Mass. While the Latin Mass parishes are growing by leaps and bounds. The youth are not a bunch a 60 hippies, they simply look at the Latin Mass in awe and wonder why it was taken from them.
