I live in The South, where there are Baptist Churches on every other block, there are alot of Catholics too.A few years back,we had a man that would stand across the street from Church EVERY(for a year)Sunday with large signs"woe-ing"the evils of Catholicism. I prayed briefly & approached him with my brother. We answered all of his"disputes" with him by pointing out his common held myths about Catholicism are FALSE. He never came back. The Grace of God & trying to KNOW MY FAITH helped tremendously

As a person who is not Catholic, I believe we should all be supportive of Christians everywhere. The world sees a caricature of Christianity and part of this is on us as Christians. We must stop squabbling among ourselves and show the love of Jesus to the world.

I completely agree with this analysis. Anti-Catholicism (and anti-Christianity as a whole) is alive and well. I am constantly shocked at the comments posted on KZbin videos and online news articles that pertain to Christianity, the Church, abortion, or any other "controversial" moral teaching. It's amazing how much "tolerance" they preach for everything and everyone EXCEPT for Christianity. When it comes to Jesus, the Church, etc., INtolerance is the name of the game.

If that is true, every school department in the US which shifts around teachers accused of abuse or molestation should be labeled as criminal... and that's pretty much all of them! Shifting an accused person to a position where they can do no harm while an investigation is going on protects both the accuser and the accused. It also punishes those who are unjustly accused of crimes they did not commit.
@BishopBarron

@JaneAlex09 Oh but the Pope has done much more than simply apologize. There have been major structural changes in the church in response to the scandal. Just take a look at the Dallas Accords from 2002 in order to see how the church in this country responded. Also, last year, there were precisely six priests credibly accused of child abuse--in a church of 70,000,000 Catholics and in a coterie of 45,000 priests. Things are getting substantially better.

I also hear the classic, "You're the devil because of the fact you're Catholic. You think you're perfect." Which isn't true at all, and I don't think I'm perfect. Because I'M NOT. As a Protestant desiring to convert to Catholicism, I find the debate can be both enlightening and divisive. I personally seek to follow the Lord via the tenants, traditions, doctrines and dogma of the Catholic church. I believe these are, by and large, founded on the Holy Bible. Is Catholicism a perfect denomination? No. Is Protestantism a perfect denomination? No. Should these two denominations be engaged in "holy war" with one another? No. If we are, who is triumphant? Who is served? God? No, He weeps at this. Is mankind served? No. Mankind is embittered and decimated by this struggle. Let me have an end on it, "There is neither Jew, nor Greek, Scythian, nor slave, free nor bond, man or woman; but Christ is all and in all." I'm paraphrasing. But I trust I have made my point. I follow Christ, first, last and always. He has drawn me to the Catholic church, this is all Him, and none of me. He knows my needs, and I will find His provision for filling them there. If you are a Protestant, and that is where He leads you, then God bless and keep you, go in peace. Churches and denominations may change, God does not. Can I get an "Amen"?

@Roper122 "mishandling" Yep, there was a mishandling of the sin that was, arguably, almost as bad as the original sin that caused a problem that needed to be handled in the first place. What a mess! And the Church SHOULD be held accountable, as it has. The members of the Church who engaged in this behavior have been exposed, the crimes brought to light, justice dealt, lessons learned, and reforms instituted.

@Roper122 "across all churches" The problem isn't that sexual abuse occurs in churches, the problem is broader than that. @Roper122 I want to mention that I firmly believe there are certain cardinals and bishops that should be charged for aiding these abusive priests. And there are more who should at least be laicized, for other reasons (I don't know if you 've heard of Cardinal Sodano?). I just don't understand why people are giving Pope Benedict such a hard time. He was one of the few people in the Church who clearly and persistently worked to dismantle the system of abuse. It strikes me as a gross injustice.

@Roper122 Absolutely that's not the general interpretation among most critics of the letter. And yes, of course people are justified in raising their questions. Because of the political and dynastic parts of the Reformation, particularity in what is now the UK, Catholicism was equated with disloyalty (or divided loyalties) in the English-speaking world. I thought we had gotten past that... and at least we have from most of our fellow people of faith. The New Atheists and the Nones can be a discouragingly scary lot. One sad note, if you read US anti-Catholic rhetoric from the 1820s to 1850s and substitute the word Muslim for Catholic it reads the same.

I see a larger trend in society. Instead of giving the best understanding of the opponents point of view and then addressing it, often people caricature the opposing point of view and ridicule the caricature. n 2001, while he was a cardinal, Ratzinger issued a vatican edict to Catholic bishops all over the world, instructing them to put the Church's interests ahead of child safety. The document recommended that rather than reporting sexual abuse to the relevant legal authorities, bishops should encourage the victim, witnesses and perpetrator not to talk about it. And, to keep victims quiet, it threatened that if they repeat the allegations they would be excommunicated.

@Roper122 (con't 3)4. Some direct questions: Do you believe the Church should acknowledge when there has been criminal activity among her members? Has the Church done this? Do you believe the Church should remain silent in the face of accusations which are untrue, even if those accusations touch upon, or refer to, activity already acknowledged as proven true? Are defense against false accusations and acknowledgment of proven wrong-doing mutually exclusive?

@zztestenglish - I don't mind your asking. :) My church is a nondenominational independent group with a pastor who graduated from a Baptist seminary. We're kind of half-Calvinist, Bible-preaching, with a heavy emphasis on missions and helping others through hard work and charity. While I don't condone prejudice toward anyone, calling anti-Catholicism the "last acceptable prejudice" is self-serving, presumptuous, and simply false. Try running for higher office in the U.S. as an open atheist and see how well you do against equally qualified religious candidates. Religion still holds an unjustifiably privileged position in much of this society.

@hiswife2002 (con't 4) These conversos were the target of the Inquisition. It is unthinkable to us today to have no seperation of church and state (and indeed, it is a situation ripe for corruption), but there was no separation as such in medieval times. The actions of the double agent conversos was anlogous to a person coming to America from a foreign country, swearing allegiance to America and then cooperating with anti-American forces

@Roper122 "boring and time consuming." Then why do you continue? Again, I say to you......state what you are saying clearly and I will respond to what you write. If you feel I've misinterpreted, which is always possible, then point out why instead of using that mistake to point out why I, or others, are so dense.

@GideonsKnight I'd add also that you might need to pick your battles. Anyway you might want to challenge your teachers in class if you are up to it (although you might made an enemy... so beware ), so that he has to explain and defend his views against your criticism in public and not in private. Some professors think themselves as the carriers of pure truth, an enlightment to the 'poor ignorant students'... they need a good lesson and a good humbling.

@Roper122 So, then, show me where I pick and choose. If not between truth and lies, then between what and what? If you pick, if you choose, it pre-supposes a minimum of two possibilities.

@bayreuth79 (con't) This "justice", conducted without lawyer, trial or judge, was based on popular opinion and consisted of torture and almost certain death to not only the accused, but to anyone who opposed this system of "justice". The establishment of the Inquisition was to bring a fair system of justice, one where evidence was presented and a trial was conducted.

@Roper122 "Nowhere did I ever say that." Please show by verbatim quote where you have included mention of the Church reforms and their efficacy in your posts. "elegant out" I don't see anything either "elegant" or an "out" about revealing a deep-seated prejudice that obsesses on negatives. "organizations" That is changing, thank God.

@koollikesnow I know. Secularism is such a silly ideology. I shouldn't laugh at it, but I can't help myself.

@bayreuth79 (con't 2)Additionally, a central aim of the Inquisition was to convince and convert rather than simply to punish, as was the province of the secular courts. Another aim of the Inquisition was to protect both church teaching and nation. Secondly, why do you not mention the conversos of the Spanish Inquisition (which is what most people refer to, or think they know about, when mentioning the Inquisition)?

While I'm certain the things Bishop Barron said are true, I don't think one could find 7 states in the US in which Catholics are forbidden by law to hold political office. The same cannot be said of atheists. A bit of perspective always helps.

@Roper122 " yup and when this happens, your organization loses credibility and respect... whether you like it or not." I can understand and accept that. It is a normal immediate reaction to a situation which is so disturbing. But those who are intellectually honest will do their research and make sure of the facts before making statements. And to spread hatred for an entire organization and it's members is not a withholding of respect as much as it is an active spread of prejudice.

" 1. Was pedophilia viewed as a "curable" disease? 2. What was the recommended course of treatment recommended for pedophilia? 3. What was the expert medical advice regarding the treatment and release of pedophiles back into the community (both in secular and in Church instances)? "

What do You ( B.Barron) think of Pagola's argument that the Father did NOT want Jesus' sacrifice as a substitute víctim ( " died FOR us")? Stops one feeling guilty for His death.

@Roper122 What Father is saying is that terrible things happened in the Church that were covered up. This equates to crimes that should, and were, brought to judgement. Reforms were subsequently put into place. Those, such as yourself, who ignore these reforms, and their efficacy, preferring only to re-hash and repeat the crimes, are motivated by what seems to me to be at least analogous with hate, not to mention bias.

@Roper122 "What? It's not logical for people to make accusations and seek evidence?" In all honesty, are you actually reading my posts or are you simply scanning them to pick out key phrases to argue with? Given the amount of reading into my words and misinterpretation of what I am posting, the latter seems likely and I honestly don't have the time or the interest to argue for the sake of arguing.
