The supreme irony of HMS Hood and Bismark is that both were felled by lucky hits. Hood blew up because of a random hit near an exposed magazine and Bismark was crippled by a single torpedo, rendering her rudder useless. In a way the fate of the Hood was more merciful as her crew was killed almost instantly when she blew up whereas Bismark endured the death of a thousand cuts, being gradually blown apart by hundreds of hits from a small flotilla of RN ships. Whether or not Bismark was scuttled or sunk by a torpedo is largely academic as by the time of her sinking she was a floating burning mass of twisted iron with all her guns being put out of action and most of her crew dead.

If you want to see another exampple of the factor of "luck" in combat, read how HMS Prince of Wales, who had escorted HMS Hood during the Denmark Strait engagement met her end in Dec 1941. Basically a single torpedo hit the support stanchion of the outboard port propeller shaft. The now unsupported and VERY quickly turning propeller shaft (PoW had been evading the Japanese attack at full speed) now flexed out of control tearing apart all the stuffing boxes, glands and bulkheads right the way back to her turbines which resulted in catastrophic flooding, which knocked out the electrical generators which killed her pumps. If the torpedo had hit anywhere else along the length of her hull she would have easily shrugged off the single hit.

@@walterkronkitesleftshoe6684 I didn't know about that one, thanks. The Bismarck sinking was more famous (even with a movie...) but the sinking of the Prince of Wales didn't get nearly as much attention. What most similar episodes show is that throughout WW2, capital battleships were not the war-winning behemoths they were once thought to be and were mostly relegated to a support role. Aircraft carriers, on the other hand....

Correction: at 0:37 the Title read "The Bismark had to been sunk" ... it should read " be sunk" ... imagine , when the Bismark was built , it was already an obsolete form of weapons ... just nobody knew that a $30000 plane launched from an aircraft carrier could cripple / destroy a multi million dollar battle ship.

Great Duel! Both had similar displacement at this time, but its hard to find the dry weight of HMS Hood at the time if its sinking, but if we go by deep load , the Bismark is 3000t heavier. Both had a top speed of 30Kts, yet the Bismark carried more fuel oil, extending its range 4000miles beyond the refitted Hood. The deck of the Bismark averaged twice the thickness of Hood, yet both had very similar Belt and Turret armor at this time in History(6-12.6" and 11-14" respectively) *HMS Hood could effectively fire an 880Kg 15" shell 30.6Km, 24 times a minute. *KMS Bismark could effectively fire an 800Kg 15" shell, 36.5Km, 30 times a minute. One of the most even matches on sea, during WW2. Anyother Battles you think were just as evenly matched?

Bismark had much more modern radar, made to target faster planes, but Swordfish Bi-planes was not very fast (at all) and the shells were made to go through thicker armor, swordfish planes has very thin armor so the shell would go through one side and out out the other. The disadvantage the British had at this part. was before the swordfish attacked Bismark they had almost accidently attacked a allied ship, and the British swordfish had lost the element of surprise.but they had disabled Bismarks rudder despite the lost element of suprise.

Hence why it was renamed from the "Reichmarine" to the "kriegsmarine" when the nazis came to power, and why it was controlled by OKM which in turn carried out the orders of OKW which in turn was sworn to carry out the orders of the "commander in chief" A.K.A Adolf Hitler, who all German service personnel swore allegiance to personally by name.

The only had so many ships to cover all the possible passages Bismarck & Prinz Eugen could take. Also they had to cover convoys and keep an eye on Scharnhorst and Gneisnau in Brest. Hood was old and rather worn out, but coupled with Prince of Wales, they thought they could do it. The shot that hit the magazine in Hood was a bit of a lucky shot you'd have to admit. How Hood would have fared in a gun fight is anyone's guess. But we know that Prince of Wales was too new to do much although the damage done to Bismarck was actually done by Princes of Wales.

@@swanner95 Sorry, I didn't see right away that it was the thumnail that actually troubled you, the "Bruno" turret seems much smaller due to the poor quality of the thumnail, it is not easy to distinguish the number of guns of the turret, but looking closely, it is the "Bismarck" because the rear mast includes at mid-height a kind of protuberance which is most certainly "a crow's nest" where men were stationed whose lookout function. This feature is not visible on the "Scharnhost". In addition, the arrows of the two cranes are directed towards the rear (their bases are located at the base of the chimney on each side) So it is indeed the Bismarck on the thumnail.

Maybe it took a lot to sink the Bismarck but it took surprisingly little to make her combat ineffective. A couple hits early on by the POW, the torpedos, and a few minutes of fire by the HMS Dorsetshire that damaged internal communications and fire control systems. The situation wasn't helped by very poor crew moral, most had been kept at their battle stations at gunpoint for 2 days, most were drunk. In the final battle one main turret never engaged and its crew abandoned it prior to the hit from the 8" guns of the Dorsetshite that knocked it out of service.

The steering compartment had sustained considerable damage and was taking on water. Trying to blast off the rudder or rudders would have made a bad situation even worse. The ships antiquated design, 3 screws and 2 rudders doomed the ship. Then there are other factors like the German failure to protect internal communication lines and fire control systems. Even before the Rodney opened fire the HMS Dorsetshire with 8" guns had disabled turret Bruno (the turret's crew had abandoned their posts before the engagement began, they were drunk and only being kept at their posts by their officers at gunpoint) and wrecked much of the Bismarcks fire control systems. The Bismarck was combat ineffective within the first 10 minutes of the engagement.. The Bismarck was an enormously expensive, overly complicated but antiquated design, maned by a poorly motivated crew. Maybe one of the most overrated warships of all time.

@@emilkarpo are you sure the dorsetshire 8" disabled turret bruno?!? Turret bruno was hit on the top by an 16" shell of Rodney and that shell didn't penetrate the armor but the explosion disabled the bridge crew, that's happened. The dorsetshire 8" shell you maybe mean disabled the range finder that was only protected by max. 4" steel. If admiral Lütjens not demoralized his crew this fight has had an other end because the accuracy of the German fire was still incredible and Rodney nearly was hit at the beginning of the battle also the British ships could maneuver the Bismarck not and this ship took more damage than any other ship in any war and did not sink through the Shells and torpedoes of his enemy rather through his own crew. Dorsetshires torpedoes hit Bismarck long after the selfdestruction was managed. Survivors out of the engine compartment told that everything was fine down the under the armored deck only smoke was comming through the ventilation system because of the fire on board. And Ballard who found Bismarck on the bottom of the Atlantic checked the whole torpedo protection and found there was no damage from torpedoes not even a bump in it. The final conclusion is the Bismarck wreck have had no signs of implosion that every not self destructed ship has after sinking this is the proof of the myths about the Bismarck and Ballard found that proof. I agree that the Royal Navy defeated the Bismarck and her crew but the ship and crew never surrendered! Sorry for my bad English

@@emilkarpo "The Bismarck was an enormously expensive, overly complicated but antiquated design, maned by a poorly motivated crew. Maybe one of the most overrated warships of all time." Like all the new battleships. Before their last battle Bismarcks's crew was already exhausted due to lack of sleep. As for overrated: One Iowa class battleship alone did cost almost as much as the entire KGV class, yet the four Iowa class BBs combined managed to sink just one single warship, an already crippled light cruiser. The sinking of Bismarck and POW made it clear that the battleship no longer was the king of the ocean. At least Bismarck managed to do what only one BB/BC (Von der Tann) had done before; singlehandily outright sink an enemy BB/BC. And Tirpitz, because of the reputation she (he) had "inherited" from Bismarck, tied up huge ressources that could have been used elsewhere.

@@milesalpha1 The idea is good, but would the submarines have been able to maintain their maximum speed without damage throughout the "Bismarck" mission? Of course also submarines could have been placed along the route of the battleship to intervene in case of problem, but at the time there were perhaps not enough German submarines at sea in May 1941 in the Atlantic. . And let's not forget that the main mission of the U-boats was to sink the English merchant ships and not to protect the German battleships. The ideal would have been to escort the Bismarck / Prinz Eugen group by means of the aircraft carrier Graff Zeppelin (its fighter planes would have intercepted the Swordfish of the Ark Royal and its bombers would have sunk the British battleships in pursuit of the Bismarck) . This raises a problem which contributed to the end of the reign of the battleships whatever their nationalities, they had to be systematically escorted throughout their missions. This is what most navies equipped with aircraft carriers do today!

The idea is good, but would the submarines have been able to maintain their maximum speed without damage throughout the "Bismarck" mission?

The Bismarck should have had at least 6 destroyers escorting her, but German destroyers were not very good ocean going vessels! In fact when Bismarck had departed on her mission she was escorted by 3 destroyers and and a flotilla of minesweepers, but they were detached when Bismarck left Norwegian waters for the Denmark Straight because their un-sea worthiness in oceanic waters. Maybe one of the destroyers could have intercepted the torpedo hit to the rudder? Who knows?
