The funny thing is that what is being done in this speedrun is about exactly the sort of thing I would expect a James Bond character to kind of do irl, (if real life worked like this of course) what with the luring guards and taking adventage of their mode of operation, using explosives to take multiples of them out at once etc.

Thank you so much for making this great video! You commented very well on all the key moments of my run. You really did a good work. It's awesome that you highlight the DLTK mode. I'm not a speedrunner but I watch quite a lot of speedrunning videos (especially Goldeneye videos because it's my second favourite game of all time) and in my opinion, DLTK speedruns are VASTLY superior to A, SA, 00A etc, far more impressive. Those guys will look at the ground for the entire run if they could and that is so boring to watch. Now get a guy who actually masters the level, actually MASTERS IT and doesn't just look at the ground the whole damn time -- that's a dude right there.

Coincidentally, a subset for Dark License To Kill was recently made on Retro Achievements, and it looks to be one of the hardest sets on the entire site. Despite being out for four months, there are still 8 levels with zero completions outside of Softcore (which lets you load save states and rewind the game). For comparison, on the same site, thirteen people have beat the entirety of the original Ninja Gaiden deathless and sword-only, and two people have beaten Ninja Gaiden damageless. The sets for those have existed for much longer though.

Surely there are too many areas where not being hit is actually IMPOSSIBLE with everything at max...

I wonder why they took the approach of making it gradually faster and faster the more times you (start a) pause, though. I feel like I would've just, make it play the whole animation the first time, then skip to the fastest one for all pauses after that. Did they think it was too jarring?

I want Bismuth, Summoning Salt, Gymnast, et al to Kickstart a glossy monthly video game speedrunning news, interview and history magazine in the style of Nintendo Power. Magazines can exist with relatively low subs; a campaign would gauge the interest among the community. I'd love to have a tactile keepsake like that. Hell, there could even be physical strategy guides. We all are seeing how fragile digital media can be, there needs to be a tangible presence for all this, too.

Fantastic video and the TAS recreation was a brilliant idea so we could have a top-down representation. I do want to clear up one thing regarding the Explosions for people who want to try using those strats themselves: Explosions are only insta-kills when a Guard doesn't have Armor. Similar to Bond, Guards can have Armor which allows them to take more hits and is an invisible value, there isn't a Body Armor model that guards can wear like Hats or Sunglasses. The way to tell if a Guard has Armor is whether or not they do a damage animation. If a Guard grabs their arm and is bleeding, they have 0% Armor and are losing Health. If the Guard keeps shooting and isn't bleeding then they have Armor and you need to deplete all of it before they can lose any Health. If a Guard has even 1% Armor then they will run right through the Explosion regardless of how much Health they have whereas if a Guard has 1000% Health but 0% Armor then they die immediately. Fortunately none of the Guards in Silo have Armor so Explosions will always insta-kill them but other levels like Caverns will have Guards with Armor. This also applies to Bosses like Xenia or Baron Samedi, you have to deplete all of their Armor before you can insta-kill with an Explosion.

Main things tyat increase my positive opinion of this game are bullet starting point being at the gun, enemies being right or left handed, and that having an effect on gameplay, and neat grenade mechanics! Deing able to exploit railings is kind of a large oversight, but I understand how railings are an edgecase for several of the game's mechanics.

Dude played the closest to a real James Bond might have needed to be just to survive, aside from exploiting the guards grenade animations and the fact that he needed to shoot them in the head 10 times. Having to sneak around and lure guards without leaving a single chance to get seen by one or else getting shot on sight sounds like how those situations would really play out in a "realistic" sense, which is crazy to think about when playing FPS games as you could otherwise often blitz through enemies or just make sure to aim and shoot quickly (which in DLTK or just having enemies with 1000% accuracy AND damage, as you explained it can result in literal death from peeking through a corner even at frame 1). ...That said, HUGE props to every single player that has achieved succesful DLTK runs in these levels, let alone these Silo runs which you broke down excellently with how much of a feat achieving that *while being on a time limit* legitimately is.

I just can't see how certain levels are possible. Some of them have sections where you surely cannot avoid being hit with everything at max. Basically the last six levels I'm thinking.

I'm taking the liberty to post the Additional Notes of the video in case they are deleted from PasteBin. These are the notes mentioned in 5:24, written by Bismuth, as of October 6th 2023. Note 1 (2:06, 5:25): The name Dark License to Kill comes from it being a much harder version of another special 007 difficulty: License to Kill. LTK has the same one shot death rules, except enemies also have 0% health, so they also take one hit. It was named after the multiplayer game mode License to Kill, which is itself named after another Bond book and movie. Note 2 (7:35): This is demonstrated in multiplayer to get an outside view, but the shot trajectories in multiplayer are actually calculated from the camera's point of view. In the example in the video, Ourumov is actually missing Bond by aiming too far left, barely missing the head. Note 3 (11:57): This can change if they have body armor, but guards with body armor are fairly uncommon (usually different types of guards, like those that come in during alarms in Bunker) and none of them can be found in Silo. Also, explosions deal damage in four equally spaced pulses rather than constantly. Therefore, it can be possible for Bond or a guard to run through an explosion without getting hurt, especially towards the end. The last pulse is 79% of the way into the fire animation, so the last moments before it disappears are harmless. Note 4 (12:50): As soon as I find out why that happens I'll write it here. Note 5 (13:00): If a guard is injured in the middle of some animations like rolling or sidehopping, they'll complete their stupid acrobatic move before doing the hurt animation, which can significantly delay the point at which guards who saw it will set their target to Bond's position. Also, if there's a direct line of sight between the guard and Bond, even if the guard doesn't see Bond at that moment, the reaction is instant. If the line of sight if obstructed, the reaction is delayed. Note 6 (14:40): It is possible to skip keycards by getting scientists or guards to open the doors for you, but it's less reliable, especially in DLTK. Each keycard is required to leave the fuel room it can be found in, as well as to enter the next fuel room. Note 7 (20:35): Blaze alerts patrol guards from the T-shaped hallway past the fuel room when he fires on the straight bridge before throwing his grenade. You can see a guard in the third fuel room who's already running in when he throws the grenade. Note 8 (25:24): More precisely, 4 different guards are alerted for 3 different reasons. The closest guard is alerted by the shots fired into the ceiling next to him. The far two guards in the T junction are alerted by seeing a guard get injured. The far guard in the second to last room is alerted by noise.

Fun facts this is played with 1.1 control style vs 1.2 used in the main game runs. Also those K7 shots are done on purpose even down to the amount of shots. I suggest anyone to play Silo 00A it's pretty hard makes this completion way more impressive

What's the difference in control schemes?
@rage9715
@rage9715 Жыл бұрын
@disfiguringthegoddess-sh5wf 1.1 uses the stick to move and the C buttons to aim 1.2 uses the C buttons to move and you aim with the stick A and B buttons are switched. This control scheme was used on most fps games including quake, turok off the top of my head.
