Poirier just was wary of the takedowns and even with that Poirier had the advantage with striking i.e. like Colby and Masvidal, Sonnen vs Silva etc. Wary of the takedown and Islam knew quite well that he didn't want to stand and trade consistently with Poirier and went for takedowns as much as he could. Besides knees and arm punches, Islam wasn't doing much striking.

That was the best Poirier we’ve seen. Hope he continues his career. With that said he was outclassed tonight everywhere. Islam had 45 more total strikes, 12 more significant strikes, and landed at a 56% rate compared to Poirier’s 40%. Islam outsruck Poirier in every round save R4 which was 23 to 20 in Poirier favor. In terms of grappling, Islam had 5 TDs with 2 sub attempts to Poirier’s zero, and Islam also controlled Poirier for over 20% of the total fight time. Credit to Poirier for the damage inflicted, but he got at least as bad as he gave. As such, in terms of scoring this was likely to be a 50-45 for Islam (although possibly even 50-44 as R1 could’ve been a 10-8), but the champ exposed Poirier on the ground in the end. Islam proved to be the superior fights on the feet, on the ground-everywhere. And one last thing, there’s a certain subset of fans who need to understand something crucial. Stuffing a TD does not score points or do damage in MMA. After the 2 Volk fights and now this one, it is beyond tiring to listen to all the KO-bros react to a stuffed TD like it was a knock down or near-sub.

What a great break down man. Still alot of people don't like the champ because of all the ground time. As a former wrestler, it's what I'm here for. The grind was real in this one and huge respect to Dustin, that switch was nasty and he defended so well. I felt he was always on the brink of changing the momentum. Such a great fight!
