My girlfriend and I were at this performance and they opened the competition with this work. I have many recordings of this work and I must say it was one of the most beautiful performances of the "Sunrise" I have ever heard. The tempos were perfect and the phrasing was delicious. They closed with a stirring performance of one of the Beethoven "Razumovsky" quartets which secured their 1st place win.

No recent comments about this stellar performance of one of Haydn's superior quartets. Such a beautiful quartet wonderfully performed! One sees here a glimpse of Haydn's greatness as a composer!

What joy! The young players here are truly enjoying themselves, and they do the very best thing one can do in a String Quartet; they make it a wonderful conversation! They speak through their instruments. Old Papa Haydn must smile from wherever he may be.

7 years ago and now, the Dover Quartet is the gold standard of quartet music-making! And then, as now, Camden seems to smile with enjoyment as he watches over each of his friends. Wonderful, marvelous playing!

@@valedamjj1718 You obviously don`t know what your talking about. He was one of the great innovation in music history and accomplished one of the rare feats, that of inventing a musical form and bring it to its highest zenith. Much of Haydn is just now coming to the public attention, namely his operas.
@gredystar83334 жыл бұрын
@@valedamjj1718 its quite sad you think that way. Haydn defined the concept of a string quartet. chamber music where all players are equal like you see above was pretty uncommon before him. you certainly had groups of musicians playing together, but there as always a center piece. he changed that. Very few musicians in history managed to be as innovative as him.

man, that moment at 1:35 where the tune goes from soft and slow paced to energetic and fast pace is so surprising. its amazing, as least for me, how it happens several times in that movement but doesn't feel repetitive at all.

There were some "comments" about "poor sound quality here. I have played this work, and many other quartets. This is what it sounds like when you sit in the middle of four good players! If you think the sound quality is "poor", have your hearing checked. Perhaps too much rock or hip-hop has destroyed your ability to hear the lovely inner voices. so clear and precise here.

For some moments starting at about 15:11, the first violinist seems to move in ways that are strikingly similar to a character in a video game animation. Is it some effect of the frame rate? The music is quite lovely, but I fear I can't watch the video of that movement without laughing.

this cameraman sucks. every time the player is not playing the key part, he/she is in the picture.
@vladgina9 жыл бұрын
I like when they do that because I can easily pay attention to the key part, but zone out and tunnel hear only the key part sometimes. Seeing the non key parts helps bring that lost audio back to me.
@vorspiel10239 жыл бұрын
+Dan Hu :There is no "key part". It is a glorious conversation between four voices. The camera is irrelevant.
@MrFpam9 жыл бұрын
+Mark Messer This is a simplistic comment. There are parts where, for example, the cello or the 1st violin has the melody and the accompanying instruments are shown. This is arguably faulty camerawork.
@daedalux7 жыл бұрын
They try too hard to make the camera work interesting. People watching this are not here for the camera work. I would much rather mostly have a group shot and let me decide which voice I want to pay attention to visually. As others point, out there's always some interplay between voices - the camera can't keep up or decide what's "important". 3 thumbs up for performance, 1 thumbs down for camera.
@ellberge6 жыл бұрын
I agree- listening in stereo why loose the visual field? The group shot's the only answer, similar to the one I watched with Smetana and Schubert quartets in a living room. That puts you right there !

These videos have opened my eyes to something I never noticed all my years. 90% of the time women perform, they dress as naked as possible in the top portion of their bodies. They only cover their breasts and belly. The men are always covered from head to toe. I began looking around in general and noticed this to be true in all walks of life (with some exceptions, obviously, but for the most part, synonymous with all females). Young and old, across cultures and nationalities. A fascinating glimpse into the make up of the human mind. Very nice performance
