@Bisqwit3 ай бұрын
My method was somewhat gamey: finding a balance between minimal effort and good grades. I got quite good at it. One important aspect was in being organized: I spent significant effort in maintaining sheets, tables, charts etc. about the progress of my studies. In particular, a listing where for every course in progress I listed every deadline with color coding that indicates how urgently it is impending. If the task was due today, I would spend today working on it. I never attended any lectures or exercise sessions that were not mandatory, trusting that I can gain enough knowledge from the slideshows, course booklets and such, or even just search the digital book for applicable keywords on demand, and trusting that I possess the mental faculties to understand just enough that I get the exercises done. Once the model solutions were posted, I always read them through so that the next time the same or similar task appears, such as in the exam, I have gained enough understanding to do it properly. Of course, given this method, courses that actually required attendance seriously slowed down my performance.
@grumpyssandbox83633 ай бұрын
@@Bisqwit I'm curious what you use to make these "sheets, tables, and charts" you use, as I am back in school at 40, and struggle severely to maintain a practical schedule with my old method of attempting to schedule my life in a notebook. I've noticed over the years you always have very neat charts in your video presentations. What did you use to make the large chart of courses in this video that is updating over time? What application do you use to make your color coded deadlines? I would love detailed examples so I could adapt your method to my life, I'm sure other's would too. I realize this question could lead to a very detailed response. Maybe a video idea when you're less busy?
@Bisqwit3 ай бұрын
@@grumpyssandbox8363 Man, your comment was hard to find in KZbin studio… Finally found it by browsing the comments in the video. Not your fault, KZbin is just painful at times. On the other hand, your question is easy to answer. The color coded deadlines is a spreadsheet in Google Docs. It generally looks like this: imgur.com/a/bT7hJbx The example course shown is Linear Algebra and Matrices II from two years ago. Other ongoing courses would be listed below in a similar manner. Once the course is finished, it would be moved to another sheet (tab) in the document, and marked finished (valmis). Words shown are: Laskuharjoitus = homework, Vertaisarviointi = peer review, oma arvio = self-assessment, vert = peer assessment result, Koepisteet = exam points, arvio = estimate, Harj.pisteet = homework points, Yhteensä = total, Arvosana = grade, Loppukoe = final exam. The animated chart is a webpage, written in PHP. The second picture on that same page (imgur.com/a/bT7hJbx) tells more details in a reply I wrote to another person.

I appreciate you taking your time out to answer and will make good use of it. Also, no notification from KZbin at all about your response, I came here and had to find and open the comment as well.

Granted, I am extremely antisocial, but I do not think that makes my conclusion incorrect. Your humor is also very appreciated. I have a question for you; would you agree that everyone is controlled by the thing that destroys them (as opposed to the things that please, empower, develop, or comfort)?
@Bisqwit3 ай бұрын
Thanks for commenting. Your question is interesting. What am I being controlled by? What am I being destroyed by? I think it depends really on the perspective. If a person is living their passions, actively doing career choices, then one could say they are controlled by a thing that pleases or empowers them.

@@Bisqwit Thoughtful reply. What destroys us varies, sometimes it is cancer, sometimes addiction, sometimes it is errors in philosophy. Many thing, too much to list. What I observed is that when confronted by an explicit terminal threat, we tend to dedicate and center our lives around that threat. So, say one is diagnosed with terminal cancer; all of a sudden all of ones thoughts and actions become dictated with that in mind. Or say one is drafted into the military at a time of war; all of a sudden all of ones choices and actions are made within the framework of trying to survive that war. Things that made us happy or fulfilled prior lose value.
