There is a 5 minute video titled, "Santana's Acid Trip'' where Carlos talks about doing acid before going onstage for this performance. I've heard he also did an interview or two where he said he dropped mescaline. Santana was scheduled to play at 8:00pm that night. So, being hippie rockers at Woodstock they sourced some Mescaline and dropped it. Their plan was to have a nice mellow afternoon trip and be back down to earth by showtime. 20 minutes after they ate the Mescaline the director told them "There's been a cancellation you boys are on in ten!" So these guys are straight trippin balls right now while this videotape is running. Carlos said his guitar neck turned into a snake and kept twisting and turning on him! Somewhere on here in the interview with Carlos where he tells the story, you should check it out. This performance is what got Santana on the map. At the time, it was the largest gathering of people in US history, nearly a half a million people. It was an inflection point in US history and marked the culmination of the "hippy" movement and culture, which began 2 years prior in 1967's Sommer of Love. Literally every single performance at Woodstock is a class piece of musical history in the making.

The amp he is jacked into is still the amp he uses today on his shows. It is treated with extreme care for it is an artifact that is still being used. I have been blessed with uncasing it on the IN and casing it on the OUT several times and I hold it with awe each time. Carlos is a wizard at making on-the-fly adjustments to the Amp and his guitar to continuously be in tune while conditions are changing with the Amp and the temp/humidity/pressure/and static charge of the air change throughout a performance, even during a cold front passing producing a thunderstorm with heavy downpour of rain in the middles of a midwestern summer. It is a talent and connectivity with his equipment that very few performers achieve in their lifetime. The best Santana show I have witnessed over the years is when Carlos and Steve Winwood get together. They are like kindred souls that one seems to bring out the best in the other.

There will be concerts with more people, great bands, great performances but none of them will have the impact of the Woodstock Music and Art Fair of 1969. There is a movie out there that chronicles the concert (Martin Scorsese is among the editors), I would recommend the director's cut. I'm not alone in recommending Joe Cocker's performance of 'A Little Help From My Friends', a Beatles cover. Thanks for the reaction, it brought back memories a very important time of my life. Oh my gosh you have once again brought back memories. 1969 my Hippie days. I absolutely love this. Woodstock in case you don't know was a four day festival of love and music. Stared out as a ticket show but later into the show people especially hippies started crashing the fences. They came from every state in the U.S. this was held in New York. The freeways were shut down because people were parking on them. Some people were known to park and walk 10 miles or more to get there. What stared as a regular concert turned into an audience of over 400,000 people. Some of the greatest bands in the country attended. The streets became so crowded that they had to fly some of the performers in and out by helicopter. That screech you heard was what is known as feedback from the amplifiers being so loud. The members of the band were high on a drug called mescaline which is a form of LSD yet they pulled of a fantastic show. Please react to The Who, Ten Years After and Jimi Hendrix doing his famous guitar solo of The Star Spangled Banner. The entire crowd stood up and was absolutely quiet during the performance. I hope this gave you a small insight to what Woodstock was all about. There is a movie called Woodstock that came out during that time and shows quite a few of the performances. I was 16 years old and saw the movie when it first came out at the drive in theaters. Those were the days of my life. Thank you for being such a sweet soul. ❤❤❤ I am a subscriber and watch you everyday. P.S I also love cowbell. I was once a drummer and loved using my cowbell. Sorry I just have to add you would have made a beautiful hippie.

Woodstock is the grand daddy of all festival concerts. Three days of band after band who all became legends. In Santana's case, this was the performance that put them on the map being that this show was just a couple weeks before the release of their debut (first) album. Pretty much only known in and around the San Francisco music scene, Woodstock and their upcoming album made them globally known.

Carlos and the band thought they were gonna be playing their set a few hours later in the day so some of them took some LSD thinking they had plenty of time for it to wear off by the time they got on stage, but one of the bands was late so Santana had to go on early and by the time Carlos started playing the first couple of songs the LSD was starting to hit full blast and he said the neck of his guitar was a snake that was trying to wrap around his arms and that he was trying to fight this snake off.....he was imagining all this of course....but I dont think he missed a note and he mentioned that he went back and watched the film later and noticed the faces he was making were more intense during this performance and that he attributed this to the LSD trip he was on and his concentration on fighting the snake.....pretty crazy performance though.....he was able to pull it off...the band were fairly unknown up to that point in time....just another crazy rock and roll story from that weekend.

Ha! Yes! Definitely more cowbell! It's great how that's just become such a long lasting meme now, from before memes were even a thing. If you didn't know, the origin of that is a Saturday Night Live skit that's probably 25 years old now, with Christopher Walken, that you saw in "Pulp Fiction", who's amazing, and hosted SNL quite a bit, and was very good on that show. The sketch was a depiction of Blue Oyster Cult recording one of their most famous songs "Don't Fear The Reaper", which I don't think you've reacted to yet, but you definitely should. So, Will Ferrell plays a cowbell player that's annoying the rest of the band with trying to constantly work his cowbell into the song, but Christopher Walken is the music producer who's in to it, and is constantly demanding more cowbell!

By his own account of this performance, Santana believed he was not just playing his guitar but wrestling a powerful serpent. Since the band was originally scheduled to play later that night, he had decided to 'take a little trip' and enjoy the day, figuring he'd be ready to go at showtime. To his surprise their set was abruptly moved ahead by several hours, just as the experience was peaking. There were at least 400,000 kids in the audience. Santana was still a relative unknown and Woodstock propelled him to super stardom. I think maybe you were born into the wrong generation, Biss. Hello Bisscute, I particularly loved your reaction today, because it was about maestro Carlos Santana, who I can proudly say is of Mexican origin, immediately recognizable with his distinctive style that is a fusion of rock, Afro-Cuban rhythms and Latinos. Santana was just 22 years old when he participated in the Woodstock festival. Legend has it that he had consumed psychedelic substances before playing, it is even said that he said that in his hallucination, the neck of the guitar was a huge snake that moved in all directions. However, he played wonderfully well, his performance was explosive. , as you could tell. It is said that he, Janis Joplin and Ten Years After were the revelations of the festival. Jimi Hendrix, will be a different story worth telling in your next reaction to Woodstock. By the way, I understand that Santana used a red Gibson SG guitar on that occasion. which is now on display at the Hard Rock Café in Marbella. I suggest a reaction to the band Ten Years After at the same festival performing: I`m going home, it is a sublime participation. Greetings and a hug from Mexico City. P.S. That caught my attention about an alternative project that you have in mind.

Biss, if you want something a little different, but really sounds great, check out some Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass, "The lonely Bull", "Rise" and "Spanish Flea" are some of my fav's, they're all instrumentals, and feature great horns.

Was never really into Santana to be honest, but i obviously heard of him and knew he was a awesome guitar player. A song of his i absolutely love is Samba Pa Ti, its one of my favorite songs and i find it very spiritual. Great genuine reaction as always, love the dancing and you're positive pure energy. Your videos always make me happy thank you ❤

Carlos was tripping so hard during this performance. In later interviews he said his guitar neck turned into a snake and he was freaking out wrangling it.

They didn't even have a recording contract yet here... After this performance, They got one immediately!

@@bruceheckerman7343 , you are mistaken. Santana had obtained a recording contract the previous winter for their debut album. They recorded it in the spring of 1969. It was released the week after Woodstock.

Santana said that he expected to be on later so he dropped acid and was then told they needed to go on so he was tripping during the performance. He said it felt like his guitar was squirming in his hands.
