Love the fine brass arrangement; the lady not being a native German speaker gives an excellent, lovely intonation and performance. I've truly enjoyed this!

I pray this will always be a tribute of remembrance to the great organist Williston Hobbs playing the Conn Organ at the introit every 4th Sunday, Campbell AME Church, Washington DC, from 1960-1974. This was his favorite and he played it to awaken souls to the coming of Messiah. May he rest in peace.

her German is actually very good, for someone who is not a native speaker. Really! Originally, this piece was written for a man, without the trumpets and trombones, but this arrangement is beautiful. I love it!

Beautiful venue, beautiful voice, wonderful brass, classic interpretation. Sometimes restraining emotion can bring out the beauty of the music. It's not always appropriate, but I think for Bach, it's a good choice - treating the voice as an instrument.

I am a classically trained vocalist. I have toured several countries and performed with some of the best musicians and conductors in the world with my choirs. This performance is beautiful. As far as accuracy goes, she took artistic license and made the piece even better. I would like to hear what you call a good performance of this piece because I thought this was flawless. If she is not a professional singer she should be.

Bach did not compose Bist du bei Mir. It is an aria by Gottfried Heinrich Stoelzel copied into the Notebook of Anna Magdalena Bach, Johann's wife.

"Bist du bei mir" n'est pas de Johann Sebastian Bach, mais de Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel (cf. opéra "Diomedes oder triumphierende Unschuld"). L'arrangement est somptueux et les cuivres sonnent magniquement bien. Bravo.

What a lot of people don't know is, some random guy took it off Bach's harpsichord one morning while he forgot he left it there and put his name on it. Bach later found out about it and went over to his house and hit him with a stick until he agreed to pay him fifty nine cents for the work. True story.

Wow! That's a fascinating bit of music history trivia! Thank you so much for sharing it! 🙏🌿🌻🌿🙏
@olgat.28373 жыл бұрын
Target Football, indeed, many people do not know this, because it probably did not happen. And in general, little is known about this: "Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel's opera Diomedes was staged in Bayreuth in November 1718. There has been some speculation how one of its arias, "Bist du bei mir", came to be known in the household of the Bachs in mid-1730s Leipzig, when Anna Magdalena Bach, Johann Sebastian's wife, copied an arrangement of the aria in her second notebook. 21st-century scholarship has shown that, mainly in the period from the mid 1720s to the mid 1730s, at least several dozens, maybe even over a hundred, of compositions by Stölzel were adopted by Bach or his family members in their public and private music practices. Only indirect evidence has come to light how such music was transferred from Stölzel to the Bachs. Bach and Stölzel were in the same places at different times, and shared acquaintances, but whether they met in person can only be surmised" (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bist_du_bei_mir).

The above comment was intended to be what is known as a joke 😂. Whoever wrote it, it is a lovely aria. And I like this version of it, very nicely done.

@@targetfootball7807 No worries, mate. I got your joke. Some people just get carried away. I'm pretty sure Mr Bach had a fantastic sense of humour.
@prototropo2 жыл бұрын
@@targetfootball7807 Yes, this is a really great recording--and a real gem of music. But, well, I actually didn't get your joke, either, Target. But since the topic is interesting and serious, I went to do some research, and found that you and both Olga had the right story, minus the stick and money. though the real story is still foggy, apparently. Bach was either the brunt of plagiarism, or was himself guilty of creative theft. The likelihood that plagiarism in some way clouds the world's most revered composer is kinda depressing. Although using other guys' music wasn't quite the horror in the Baroque that we assign to it. Handel did it a lot, too. The important thing is that both Bach and Handel wrote a lot of incredible music that was verifiably their own. Their genius cannot be diminished.

This is every brass player's nightmare gig. If these same five guys were accompanying a 60-voice choir the conductor would tell them they are too damn loud. So they recorded an entire album with a soprano soloist. And they don't overbalance her.

I can fully support your statement, Marianna, but in this case we do not have a composition by J. S. Bach. This incredibly soulful aria was composed by Gottfried Heinrich Stoelzel and is part of his opera "Diomedes". You could check out on Wikipedia ;-) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bist_du_bei_mir

Nice to know that more people than myself can appreciate intelligent, articulate conversation about interesting topics - like quality in music.

For Linda Crister When your wedding day comes, make sure the singer has the following wording for the first stanza: Bist du bei mir, geh' ich mit Freuden, Des Lebens Wanderweg mit dir entlang In Freud' und Leid Bis uns der Himmel gibt Bescheid Then for the second one, only change the first word: Bleibst du bei mir ...etc. This sings for the couple to stay together for a while, before they start talking about death. So give them a chance before kicking the bucket. Mit liebsten Grüßen

What's surprising to me about this listing is that it continues to attribute the song to J.S. Bach, when it has long been considered not to be his work, but rather likely that of Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel.

Does anyone know the copyright guidelines for this song? I would like to use this recording in a short film. I know that any work under JS Bach falls under public domain, but I'm not sure about using recordings such as this, that are renditions of Bach...
@wbr2007 жыл бұрын
The extent to which degree copright is protected varies between countries. What's no infringement in Russia, Turkey, China, would be a grave one in the US, EU. But I suppose that in most places of the world today, the artistic performance and the film production are creative artistic acts, bringing about their own rights of ownership. Bach's works being public domain only entitles us to sing, perform, record, scan, copy, print, publish what's in Bach's writings, without his approval. Millions are gained from that, without any heirs getting royalties. BUT recent products are not transferred automatically into the public domain just because one of their many aspects (here: composition) is public domain. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright
