This is honestly one of the most effective horror games without even being that directly scary. It gets it's horror through guilt and building empathy rather then menacing environments and disturbing imagery.

Yes... usually drama and horror don't last long in a game, as the developers don't dare to really stray from the action genre. Fortunately this game does that.

This phenomenon is called psychological horror. It doesn't spam you with visual jumpscares or play sounds that give you the shivers, but rather plays with your emotions in such a ways that keeps you uneasy, while and sometimes even AFTER playing the game. For me it does it's job much better than regular visual/sound based horror games, but y'all do y'all.

I have a theory that this game is more of a metaphor for suicide. Continuously searching for something that makes life worth living, not really wanting to die deep down, but feeling the need to ‘quit’ regardless. Almost like the bitbuddy and the player are one in the same. Often the bit buddy will refer to themselves using “us.” I feel that the bitbuddy is the hopeful part of us, the part that knows we can’t give up, desperately fighting to find reason to live, while we as the player would simply rather give up entirely. Just a theory, but some parts of the game seem to indicate that quite a bit.
