it's both. market reacts to many things, one of them is reacting to what it thinks the fed WILL do. that's why rate cuts and rate increases get priced in a lot sooner than when they actually happen

A couple of points to make about recessions, it's not in a country's interest to go out of their way and announce they are in a recession, BECAUSE - doing so, causes the very behavior likely to prolong and deepen the recession. The US is not alone here, I'm sure most country's governments try to avoid the subject as much as they can. In fact you can create a recession, by spreading fear of a recession. The other point is, not all recessions are the same, some are shallow and some are deep.

Rate cuts are a result of cycle pivot, not a reason. Aggressive rate cuts is signaling that the fed is behind the curve and need to pivot fast to avoid a recession, most likely will hit in next 6 months

Bitcoin will still go through its regular cycle even if there’s a recession. Rate cuts mean liquidity and it means money market rates going down. There will be trillions of dollars looking for yield.

Exactly. Love VB but this recession info was a giant waste of time and energy. At the end of the day (the cycle) it will make very little difference, plus we’ve been in a recession for over a year and there’s a strong indication we’re coming out of it. It’s beating a dead horse.

S&P 500 returns isn’t what determines a recession - it is gdp. And why we are rarely in a recession is because inflation is so high from printed money that the economy grows in nominal terms, m2 is so high as well but doesn’t feature into real gdp, but is also what is holding up gdp - hence, the fed will always print if a recession comes to avoid a technical recession

Let's be honest, it's likely that unemployment is about to go into exponential growth mode in the next few months. I think the FED is way too dovish. I would recommend to be careful with investing right now too. Not saying that you shouldn't do anything, but hedge and prepare for possible sharp pullbacks. Still DCA'ing myself, but having enough cash on the sideline. Next to that; Look at the relation between the weight of the first rate cut and what follows afterwards. 50 bps first rate cuts (heavy) tend to correlate with deeper pull backs.. For as far as we can make this statistically significant of course, with the low amount of data points we have.

The NBER was never meant to provide a real time recession call but just provide the official dates when the recession begins and ends even if it's 2 years after the fact. One reason is the the data that they/we get is usually not accurate and is constantly being revised, for example in August it came out that the US added 818,000 fewer jobs for the 12 months through March 2024, talk about a inaccurate and lagging data. According to NBER "A recession is a significant decline in economic activity spread across the economy, usually lasting more than a few months". For NBER some of the things going into determining a recession include: real personal income less transfers, nonfarm payroll employment, employment as measured by the household survey, real personal consumption expenditures, wholesale-retail sales adjusted for price changes, and industrial production.

Those not heeding macro cycles and events will get wrecked. There's still a left translated cycle that needs to be disproved and plenty of bearish macro indicators that need to be watched. An 18.5 year cycle ends 25/26, and the markets will eventually correct. That doesn't mean blow off tops. or gains, can't be had.
