After helping to inaugurate CNN.com on the Internet in the early 1990s, Garzik worked at a succession of Internet startups and service providers for over two decades, all while working on open source software engineering projects. Involvement in one of the best-known open source projects, the Linux kernel, led to an extended tenure at Linux leader Red Hat, during open source's most formative years. In July 2010, while reading slashdot.org, Garzik stumbled across a post describing bitcoin. Immediately recognizing the potential of a concept previously thought impossible − decentralized digital money − he did what came naturally: developed bitcoin open source software and started micro-businesses with bitcoin at their foundation. Almost by accident, Garzik found himself square in the middle of the global, disruptive, amazing hurricane of a technological phenomenon known as bitcoin.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Jeff I'm an early adopter and I thought this was a fantastic talk. That audience came in thinking bitcoin=silk road and left thinking bitcoin=internet of money.

Great 15 min intro for newbies; spares them rabbit-hole topics like mining, alt-coins, meta-coins, app-coins. Also thanks for not mentioning the $ price action - it's irrelevant to the big idea.

He seems to be a very smart guy. My main thing is that he did not provide many slides. Lots of people are visual learners. Especially those that use youtube :D

It-s not accurate to say that bitcoin the currency runs on top of the blockchain though, is it? It-s one program, not two separate where one is higher level than the other. Correct me if im wrong please.

Is there any conflict of interest in being core bitcoin developer and working for bitpay?
@JamesonLopp
@JamesonLopp 10 жыл бұрын
No - ***** would not be able to add features to Bitcoin Core that would give BitPay any sort of unfair advantage, because the other Core developers review any changes that he proposes.

I will agree that the idea cryptocurrency shows promise for the future. I'm still not sold on it yet. I don't see how it can ever replace real, physical currency. It may grow in the digital realm, but it will never be a primary method of transaction. Right now it's really more of a digital commodity than a currency. It has an unstable value, tied to other currencies, and a very low market adoption. Not to mention a high learning curve. For wide adoption, it will have to be much much easier for the average person on the street to understand it. Then there's the large data footprint. I was immediately turned off by bitcoin when I discovered it downloaded a 14GB+ blockchain, UGH! really. F'k that. IMO, bitcoin isn't ready yet. maybe in 10-20 years, but I still consider it alpha software.

I think government fiat will destroy itself over the next 15-20 years. The world is looking for new reserve currency. You make a good point about needing physical money too, I wonder if there could be a decentralized alternative to for that as well.

Eric Palmer Fiat destroys itself gradually, every second. It's a feature. As for physical, easy, given the fiat ("physical currency") is uniquely identifiable and sufficiently resistant to counterfeiting you can just color a bitcoin and attach it to the paper with the specific ID. Take a bank note, write 0.1337 bitcoin on it, attach 0.1337 Bitcoins to the Serial No. If the person knows the note is genuine they can just confirm with their smartphones what amount of Bicoin you attached to it and redeem it when they return it to you. - Voila, you are the Central Bank, the new proxy of trust.
