I've listened to two Peter Schiff interviews recently on the Gold vs. bitcoin debate, and he has been solidly successful in convincing me that he's not someone who is able to objectively debate the gold vs bitcoin issue.

Peter Shiff is a Gold Salesman who owns a company that invests in and Sells Precious Metals. He is not arguing objectively or truthfully, he is talking up his book. Raoul Pal has every penny of his liquid net worth in Crypto. This is like a debate between the CEO of Coke and the CEO of Pepsi talking about which Cola is better. The arguments are interesting but you're delusional if you think you're listening to two people speaking the unbiased truth.

Making the case for BitCoin is no different than making the case for paper fiat currency. They both have no inherent intrinsic physical value (one is just a piece of colored paper while the other is just electronically stored digital bits) other than the belief that they are a medium of exchange, a unit of account and a store of value.

I think a major issue here is that he is trying to compare bitcoin to other assets which have existed for hundreds of years. Bitcoin is the first fully decentralised asset where you can send it anywhere in the world needing nothing more than a computer and internet connection. The only thing you need to ask yourself is do you trust your government? do you trust your central bank? do you even feel a little uneasy about the excessive money printing? If the answer to any of those is yes, then bitcoin is a way for you to protect yourself.

Peter’s question (while ignoring all the utility) seems to be “why wouldn’t you rather have a more stable, consistent store of value instead of a more volatile inconsistent store of value?” if that’s how you’re going to measure it the answer is actually easy. The more stable option has a much slower, much lower value, and the more volatile one has a much higher value, but is also actually quite stable over the long-term. So if you go with the more volatile one, your odds of being higher are much better, and it’s still probably stable and if it starts to collapse, you can absorb a lot of collapse and still land at the same value you would have the option. It seems like a no-brainer. I’ve loved Peter in the past, but I’m going to have to just assume he’s in it for his business now.

This is why, for instance, a painting of a great master would be valued far higher than that of a mediocre artist even though the material base for both paintings (canvas, paint, solvents) is the same.

Gold is a safe haven, it's an insurance policy" what happens when the government decides, As the US did in the 1930's, that it's illegal for civilians to own gold and they confiscate it from you. You are not protected owning gold, it can be taken from you. With Bitcoin, as long as you know your private key, you can pack up and leave tomorrow and take your value with you. That sounds like more of an insurance policy to me.

Kept a little gold- about an ounce in small denominations mostly for bribing purposes- and my 8.25 btcs, which I bought for $15K back in 2017, is now worth quite a bit of money. Now you have people like Michael Saylor urging people to buy mere fractions of a btc (I think 0.1 to 0.25). His belief is it will eventually go to $13M 20 years from now. ($1,300,000 to $3,250,000) However, you might be dead by then.

I really like Peter Schiff because at his heart he's a freedom maximalist as I am. But he's just wrong about this. First, even if BTC is never used as a currency that doesn't mean it can't find other utility. Is he aware that applications with utility are being built every day on the lightning layer? There are any number of inventions that have found different purposes other than what they were originally designed for. Owning real estate on the most trust-less and anonymous network yet to exist puts you in a position to rent space on that real estate. Second, gold only has the value it does because people say it does. That's no different than BTC. If gold were valued only according to its use in industry it would be worth a fraction of its current value. But you should own gold. There's a non-zero chance that all this comes crashing down and there's no grid and you're raising goats and in that scenario, you'll want gold. And bullets.

i dont understand with blockchain being used in a different industry had to do with the price of bitcoin. does a company using blockchain to store info on it have to speculate on digital tokens to use it? and doesnt a lightning network essentially centralize bitcoin? doesnt that defeat the whole point of bitcoin? if bitcoin did become a currency in the future coundnt the central entity controlling the overlaying network basically just start printing whatever tokens are pretending to be bitcoin?

@@AC-wl7ve The point to my post is that Schiff often says that BTC has no utility. That's clearly not the case if you can build things on it. Lightning too centralized? Okay, but it's still a "thing" built with the BTC network. Don't like it? Build your own. No one can stop you. You can use the network to build whatever you want. And, no, you can't fake bitcoin. It's anonymous, but it is completely public. Everyone can see which satoshis belong in which wallets even if they don't know who has the wallets.

@young9534 The actual value question ... I guess most would say gold is used in electronics therfore there is value in the products people use that depend on gold. Bitcoin technology is the most secure network known to man. Think in terms of the strongest, most secure vault to store your assets. And in addition, it is permissionless ... meaning you can securely send/receive your asset without friction ... no middle man such as a bank ... no authority to restrict your transaction. You and you alone decide when and how much. If you were in a war-torn country, it would be very unlikely you could escape to another country with your gold. This wouldn't be an issue if you had bitcoin. It is a store of value asset like gold, art, or any other rare asset, but far more secure than any other asset. This is the value of the bitcoin technology.
