I believe the fourth SD60MAC had a similar "fate". It was painted a really nice sky blue and had the addition of the large SD70ACe-esq radiators. It also served/is serving as a testbed. Its new classification is actually the SD60ACe lol.

A few things about these demo units. Emdx 91 was also an sd89mac but received 90mac specs, Emdx 92 was not actually a testbed for the tier 4 project, 91 was the one used for that. 92 was actually used as a testbed for the f125 project (if you look at the cowl frame and the time 92 received these parts, it matches with the f125), 90, 91, & 92 still remain stored at the la grange plant.

0:29 12 cylinders instead of 20? Versus the SD80MAC, yeah. But the SD90MAC had 16 cylinders in both versions of it. Also worth noting is the fact that the SD89MAC didn’t contribute to the SD70ACe as much as it did the SD70ACe-T4. The 12 cylinder engine eventually became the 12-1010J, which is what the SD70ACe-T4s use.

I saw the last UP 90mac running on its last days in Texas I don’t remember how many years ago but just a day or so after I’d discovered they’d been removed from service a lot were leased out. Personally they were my favorite as it was the last really large diesel. These 70 variations will be all we have in ten years. I just want American railroads to go through a new design phase, I miss seeing all the fallen flags and odd ball diesels in the late 90’s and early 2000’s as a kid. In Texas so many major railroads ended in Houston or on the gulf coast even today you see every major class one have motive power in the ports. Now with kcs and cp merged it’s been alot more red beavers and CN in there consists

Yeah it's sad it never really went anywhere, but without the SD89MAC, we wouldn't have much of EMD anything right now other than old rebuild equipment. I can definitely see in another timeline EMD never made that thing, and gave up trying to produce new equipment, and switched to rebuilding older stuff like it does now. It's sad, but that's railroading.

The SD70ACE-T4's came out of the SD89MX/MAC and look at what happened. It was another failure. The Caterpillar 1010J's are literally EMD 265H's but with different crankshafts and fuel injection.

It’s sad that the SD89MAC isn’t used much. I’m sure EMD will get better with that locomotive.

The SD70ACE-T4's are what came out of the SD89MX/MAC and look how that turned out. Just more short lived units that turned out to be more junk. The SD80MAC's were arguably the last best units from EMD in modern times. The last great units from EMD were the GP40-2's & SD40-2's.

When I was at a model train store I saw an unpainted SD89mac! It was very surprising to see it because it was just sitting in a box in the corner of the store with all the old used stuff…

This is the type of loco that Richard Topham Hatt would have. It may be more modern than the other Sodor engines, but he seems a hard worker and deserves a chance.

I have idea: Make the SD89MAC a Cowl Unit. Also, make it run on Bio-Diesel so it’s clean for the environment. Maybe if the Alaska-Alberta Railway becomes a thing, then Cowl Unit Freight Diesels should come back in style. I mean, it does get extremely cold high up north, and what if the Crew needs to do quick repairs? The Cowl Body will protect them from the elements, and Cowl Unit Diesels just look great in General.

There are a series of locomotives built and used in chinese railroads as freight shunters, called HXN3B which are similar to SD89MAC.

The SD70ACe-T4 should have been an 89 series locomotive as it is basically a modernized version of the SD89, with the same (yet refined) engine block and similar trucks and carbody.

While the EMD SD89MAC never saw sales, at least in any games that have it, be it a train simulator or a transport game, it'll continue to live on virtually, seeing as much use as railfans want.

Giving an SD89MAC a cowl body looks a bit weird IMO. Good to know it's technology ked to the SD70ACe, so it was still somewhat useful.

All of these units are still junk. The SD70ACE's have the exact same electronic problems as the SD9043MAC's and SD90MAC-H's did. The SD70ACE-T4's were based on the SD89MX/MAC because the Caterpillar 1010J's are based on the EMD 265H's.

The SD89MAC had major potential, but EMD had already sold a ton of SD70MACs and SD70Ms. Kinda sad to see it not get any interest. 4,500 HP is right in the middle and is the ideal horsepower in my opinion.
@Slim_Slid
@Slim_Slid 11 ай бұрын
The SD89MX/MAC had almost the same output as the SD80MAC in terms of horsepower. It was just a derated variable of the SD90MAC-H's with a smaller prime mover. EMD did that for many years with every series they built. 4,500 HP seemed nice when they built the SD75I's & SD75M's but those units soon had alot of amperage,alternator,and traction motor issues which is why BNSF put most of those units in storage with only a small amount of SD75MAX rebuilds. That's why 4,300 HP was fair for EMD with the other SD70 series units.
