Epica - "Tides of Time" Reaction: FIRST TIME HEARING

Great reaction to one of my favorite Epica ballads. Written by Simone and Mark Jansen (founder. male vocalist, rhythm guitarist, and recent first time father) upon the passing of Mark's maternal grandmother. She was a big supporter of the band, allowing them to rehearse in her house, so her loss was deeply felt by the band. Love the lyrics and how they perfectly capture loosing someone we car deeply for and has been a role model. Love how it encourages us to take comfort in the knowledge that death is inevitable and comes to us all and yet we can still be present to our loved ones we leave behind. Once Upon a Nightmare from Omega Alive is another great ballad from Epica.

Don’t think I’ve come across another rock or metal band with so many stunning ballads. You could probably fill two albums with their ballads alone.Simone’s voice on this is magical.

Every Epica album has a power ballad. This song is dedicated to Mark Jansens's grandmother, who let the band rehearse and stay at her house. The original 3 of Mark Simone and Coen the keyboardist speak highly of her.

Any time I come across someone watching this particular compilation of videos for this song, it brings me back to my first concert seeing them. There’s a video used in this compilation that comes from that show. It’s the only time of the 5 times I’ve seen them they played an any of their ballads. Was an amazing concert.

The ironic thing is: Epica is usually considered the black/death metal border of symphonic metal (rightfully so), yet they are probably the band with the most amazing metal ballads ever written. If you liked this, consider listening to 'Rivers' and 'Rise again', the latter of which has been done together with Apocalyptica, a legend in their own right.

I’m a 56 year old man ffs and I never understood how girls could fall in love with a musician (which after all used to be a male occupation predominantly), even though they never met him personally. I don’t want to say it because it feels wrong, but I really do think I could and would fall in love with Simone if I was younger. From everything I saw and heard of her, her beauty, her wit, her intelligence and of course her amazing voice…, how can you not fanboy over her?!?!?! 🫣
