Just watched some old Unite & other conference vids diving into the finer optimizations on shaders & post-processing, lighting, etc to get max AAA-like graphics on iPhone 7 to current (and Android equivalents). Unity not only has the technical chops to do it, their documentation & information ecosystem is deep, broad, and guaranteed to be up-to-date for whatever new platforms come out. IMO That's the big advantage over Godot, GameMaker, and even Unreal in some ways. Unity can take you from "My First Mario clone" to "Can I make a Crysis clone run on a smartwatch?" without having to learn assembler or be reborn as John Carmack. If you're only making simple games, modest specs, PC-only, no cross-platform or heavy graphical ambitions, then use whatever makes you happy. But that's not a good fit for everyone.

Unity is doing this because their numbers are horrible. Otherwise they wouldnt wait a year to backtrack on a decision, something no company wants to do. So it definitely isnt all good news.
