Having done game dev every day for the last 2.5 years I can attest that the steady progression is real. Particularly if you are involved in a community where you can ask questions it real helps with seeing progress. Because when you start you are the one asking all the questions then as time goes on you find you are the one who can answer people's questions. It is a really cool sense of progress that you notice more in retrospect.

I agree. Well said.

I tried several KZbin tutorials and bought a course but I was only copying what they told me to do and in the end there were no exercises or challenges for me to try by myself and on top of that the project wasn't going to turn into anything special or of my own design. So i always quit. The most fun i had was implementing my own ideas into the tutorials but sometimes it would break the tutorial because in some future video there would be a step that would be compromised by the thing i diverged from. I'm going to pick a game and reconstruct it this time. Thank you.

Great video! I just started a few months ago and most of this is very sound advice from my experience. Especially version control. It’s not covered enough and I think I would have quit by now without it. I’ve “broken” my game multiple times due to rookie mistakes but I was able to rollback to an earlier time and saved so much time
@louisdesimone91914 ай бұрын
Yes, definitely not talked about enough. That’s exactly how I felt a few years ago when I was trying to learn unreal engine and didn’t know about version control.

Highlight advice - "Dedicate at least One Hour a Day for Game Dev" Excellent. Edenbound's trailer works. Looks great. Music, FX, scenes all well done. (Professional looking.) And it did make me curious even though side scrollers are not my thing. Wishlisted on Steam, Liked and Subscribed here.👍

That thing you said regarding tutorials was true for me as well. At a certain point, following a tutorial exactly won't actually teach you anything. Taking what you learn and doing your own thing is my preferred way to learn things. Also, I think that following the fun is the best way to go forward. If what you are creating is boring to you, what reason do you have to complete it other than to prove you can complete things?
@louisdesimone91914 ай бұрын
Exactly. Tutorials are great but shouldn’t be solely relied on to learn. At some point individual learning needs to take place.

Tobe honest your the first gamedev person which i agree completely on project scale, every youtuber i mean big youtuber like "Thomas the great brush" is pitching same thing to go far a small project. What i see is like am working on game for last 3 years and only thing motivated me enough is that it helps me to learn step by step in detail along side my game is in progress too.
@louisdesimone91913 ай бұрын
Thank you. I hope you success on your journey. I like Thomas Brush’s videos but I know what you’re saying. It’s super easy to lose motivation creating small games.

I also use assets, sorry but I'm not a musician or sound effects specialist, I tried learning blender many times but I just can't I rather pay 30 bucks to get a huge tileset better than anything I could possibly ever create. I do the coding, game mechanics and game design that's what I want to focus on
@louisdesimone91914 ай бұрын
I feel the same. My blender skills are very very minimal. Assets are there for a reason.

Make Your Game even if u starting was the best point. Because if I talk about myself, I start doing dozing and feel sleepy when watching tutorials ( Basic Ones ). The best thing is to start with project as I think coz when u will create something it will motivate u that I can do this. Happy Game Development! ( lol ).

Ah gotcha. Sorry, I didn’t understand at first. Good luck on your game dev journey. I hope your game is a great success!

I'm just learning right now. I am going through youtube tutorials and build the sample project, then I go through again and apply these concepts to my own project. Often tutorials are using previous versions and the project is broken (they certainly are in all the Godot videos I've watched) . I try to figure out what has changed and fix it. Hopefully this works :)
@louisdesimone919116 күн бұрын
Yeah, this is a common problem with most tutorials out there if they aren’t updated regularly.

"I know Godot is popular right now, but I haven't done any research" Step 2: "Do a little research" ok.
@Dom-zy1qy4 ай бұрын
He meant "Do research before you make decision on what engine to use" not "Research every game engine just because"
@louisdesimone91914 ай бұрын
Hey, what I meant by this was Godot is a popular engine right now but I don’t have any experience using it so I didn’t want to speak on it. This video was based on my personal experiences. The research part was meant to inform people not to dwell on what engine to pick because in the end it doesn’t matter that much, it’s just another tool. But thanks for checking out my video still.

14 seconds in, and it's bad advice. Start with an outline or game design document. You can't choose an engine without knowing what features you actually need.
@louisdesimone9191Ай бұрын
Not true. No one new to game dev is going to know what a game design document is or how to create one. The best thing to do is just pick an engine and get started. The features don’t really matter in picking an engine since most main engines do the same thing as each other. Pretty much everything you can do in unreal you can do in Unity.
