I really enjoyed this one, thanks! Certainly the best one by W.W. Jacobs I have come across after 'The Monkey's Paw'. He really sets the mood in this one. The whole thing has such a sombre, muted feel, and the troubled Benson comes through strongly as a character.

That guy could have had people drag the well and get both his cousins body and the diamond bracelet up. His cousin had so many enemies there would be no end of suspects. He played everything a bit odd really. Thank you for sharing this one. It was fun to listen to.
@WowUsernameAvailable Жыл бұрын
Considering his mother saw him return at night and asked about the cousin, it wasn't in his best interests to have the body discovered and have her put two and two together. Also, the well is presumably on his land, and since it's unlikely that any of his men would have had any dealings with the dead guy, Benson was pretty much the only one with the motive.

I hope you will read The Monkey's paw soon. I tried to listen to the Librivox recording, but it had several people reading, making it hard to follow the story and ruining the mood. You and Greg Wagland and the absolute best.

We’ve all, well, most of us, are familiar with the famous Monkey’s Paw, but how many of us are familiar with The Well? Not I, or to be less pompous and less grammatically correct, not me.

To have owed £1,500 back in 1900 was not an inconsiderable amount. Apparently, this was not a one-off but was habitual. Hence the reticence of his nephew in pouring good after bad. His request was without explanation, which was rather presumptuous. In that year, you could have purchased 6 houses for that money. Anyway, he wasn't going to get it. He took what he saw was an easier solution....... Very sad indeed!

Nifty story, but the Moral is: He should have 1. NOT have allowed is flighty girlfriend talk him into going near the Well. 2. When she lost that bracelet---he should have said:.." Miss Olyve...get either Popeye or Bluto to go fetch it, 'Cause I Ain't---so get over it."...LoL...really, if you have the chutzpah to commit a Murder, should have the same to just keep a distance from the scene of the crime. Then just fill it in, as Mamaah would like it so done. tsk tsk...

Wonderful narration but the story is so contrived, the girl insisting on sitting on the well, etc etc. dropping the bracelet. Lazy writing.
