Story begins at 00:01:20. In the aftermath of a tragic motor accident in Norfolk, stories abound locally of strange visual and auditory phenomena. Can there really be such a thing as a ghost motor car? Our narrator is intrigued by the legend, but has no particular intention to visit the scene himself... Narrated/performed by Simon Stanhope, aka Bitesized Audio. Some background notes on the story and the author can be found in the video description. The description of the motor's travel as a great beast running and sauntering on the roads is poetic. E. F. Benson was an excellent author, and the story is excellently told! Thank you!

What a masterly piece of descriptive prose the driving section was, the story itself seemed almost secondary to that. Hearing it read aloud was an absolute treat.

True, much of the story is loving essay to the joy of motoring around the English countryside.

Hmm... A cautionary tale indeed - not for cars, but for their drivers. More and more modern vehicles connect themselves to the internet; they're loaded with infra-red sensors, vibration and heartbeat monitors, fingerpring detectors and driver-surveillance cameras, all busily recording an occupant's every move and live-streaming their data to 'the cloud'. It's quite unsettling. Will drivers involved in fatal accidents remain encoded 'ghosts in the machine' until their virtual selves can be hunted down and deleted? Information on the world-wide-web is passed from server to server and has an almost infinite capacity for backup and redundancy, so how would one go about laying such a virtual person to rest? I'm rather glad that I can only afford to ride an old bicycle these days.

Many thanks for the whole series - much appreciated. My interest in ghost stories began at a very early age when I began to read 'The Evening Standard Book of Strange Stories', a battered old hardcover previously owned by my mother in her childhood. No-one else in my family has ever understood my penchant for the macabre! But I much prefer the English style of understated fear to what comes from across the pond.
