How has it taken me so long to find this amazing video! One of Stanier's legends meeting one of Gresley's legends, nothing could be more glorious. I may need a minute, I seem to have something in my eye.... :)

It is a very special treat indeed. Personally I favor the Duchess over Bittern simply due to their valve gears. But this was a legendary video. I would love to see 3 Locomotives from the 3 Groups all whistle battle. For me that would be 60009 Union of South Africa from LNER, 6027 Princess Elizabeth from LMS, and Kind Edward II from GWR.

Don't see it as a battle, see it as two old steel giants paying respect to each other.

So pleased Bittern was preserved. It was the first A4 pacific I 'copped'. Idle in the yard at York in 1963 I think. It looked majestic.
@sprinterofficial84572 жыл бұрын
The first A4 pacific was actually 2509 (60014) Silver Link But bittern ran the last A4 powered train under British Railways

Thankyou for a great capture of these two wonderful locomotives. I’m a compulsive coach counter, I have to know how many coaches the loco is handling. It’s always a joy when the last coach passes without an intrusive diesel hanging on the back,as in the case of Bittern, and a slight disappointment when you see one of the infernal things grumbling away, as the Duchess had. I’m sure there are perfectly valid operational reasons for the diesel being present, but you always have the sneaking feeling that a rear end shove is taking place. This ever so slightly spoils the authenticity of the occasion for me, or am I possibly just being a bit churlish?

Gresley designed them fir the LNER - btw it means 'Lunatics, Nutters, Egoistic and Robbers!', where the line was almost flatter than a billiard table. Meanwhile Stanier designed the Coronations for LMS - Lots More Steam!, where the line has some rather steep gradients: Camden Bank, Lickey Incline, Grayling Bank, Shap and Beattock. When Gresley's 'duck' did the ton plus 25, it was pulling 8 coaches!, the Coronations produced something (from memory) like 35000 foot pounds of steam at the top of Shap or Beattock, something Gresley's never achieved; and had a lot of excess steam as they came over the summits. Oh and they pulled regularly 12 or more coaches unbanked over Shap and Beattock!
