Great shots I have only seen Bittern once on the main line since the 60s and it was at Wilpshire prior to using a camcorder in 2015. I have spotted myself at the far end of the platform when I filmed Bittern in MP4 with a compact! I put this on you tube and it is still on.Things have moved on and I have put a bit more camcorder footage on since. In the 70s and 80s when I was at sea I did super 8 cine but silent what a pity whilst visiting many different far away places we did not have digital South African Garretts and such. I live in Wilpshire and am limited to how far I can operate through circumstances. I will look forward to more of your high quality videos .Thank you so much. Brian

Were the Staniers and the Gresley's designed differently due to LMS lines being - on average - "hillier"? And would an A4 maybe struggle more on hills than a Coronation?
@MarshSteamVideosTM10 жыл бұрын
EASYTIGER10 A4's were built for speed. I'd say, the Coronation Classes were built for bigger loads and the ability to climb gruelling gradient's while maintaining a good speed. 46233 used to haul loads, up to 17 coaches, in it's heyday. As for the A4's, they climb extremely well. The main scene in the video, at 2.39, shows Bittern topping the 1/100 summit, at Ais Gill, which was passed at 40mph with a equivalent load of 14.
@alexwright60389 жыл бұрын
+EASYTIGER10 Staniers' brief when he designed them was to put the largest boiler he could, with the largest fire grate area on that set of wheels for both the axial loading and load gauge. this gave the LMS locos 4500 lb/f greater tractive effort than the A4. Although the A4 has a smother power delivery, as it has 6 power strokes per cycle rather than the 4 power strokes of the LMS loco.

@@thetigerstripes No. In the UK the majority of the mainline steam runs have no diesel. They are not there to assist, they are there to primarily do stock moves as there are very few places on the UK network that have the infrastructure to handle a locomotive hauled train terminating (diesel or steam). In the UK nearly all regular passenger trains are either multiple units, with a few that run top and tailed. Another reason why a steam hauled train may run with a diesel in tow is because the carriage set is not working the same diagram as the steam locomotive (in which case the diesel moves the stock to the required location). The diesels used are almost invariably what in the UK we call 'heritage diesels'. This particular one is of a class of 512 introduced in 1962 and built until 1968. Earlier in the days of mainline steam the diesel sometimes also serviced the airbraking and airconditioning one some of the carriage sets as the vast majority of UK steam locomotives were originally fitted with vacuum, not air braking and didn't have generators. However, they have all been updated in overhaul now, so when there is a diesel in tow it is just for carriage movements. If you look further, you'll find many videos of UK steam hauled mainline trains without the diesel depending on the route. The Torbay and Dartmouth Expresses never have diesels for example because the train terminates on a heritage railway that is connected to the mainline, so all the train handling facilities are available at the terminus, even though it is one of the toughest routes on the UK mainline steam schedule. The one thing the diesel is never there for is to assist the steam locomotive in hauling the train. The mailine certified steam locomotives are tested and inspected to a very high standard and a locomotive is either fit to run unassisted or it's not fit. Here is a really good compilation of last year's mainline running season highlights. You will see many of the trains have no diesel, and some trains (with the same loco, but different route do) FYI 60163 Tornado is a new build (2008) class A1 pacific, built to complete the LNER inventory of pacific classes, as none of the original A1's was preserved. There are several new builds to replace lost classes under construction in the UK. Hope you enjoy the videokzbin.info/www/bejne/lZqpYZyJqpmJhqs This is a run of the Torbay Express. The single track footage in the middle of the video is a privately owned heritage railway (the destination) where the speed limit is 25 MPH. ( www.dartmouthrailriver.co.uk/) There is some neat footage of the sea throwing spray over the train on its return journey. Enjoy! kzbin.info/www/bejne/ml7Hdn-bhqd2abs

Why the 60 odd ton deadweight of a 47 diesel towed at the back?
@MarshSteamVideosTM2 жыл бұрын
At Carnforth the A4 would have to come off due to gauging issues at Carlisle. So once again and disappointingly for the passengers, they were diesel hauled to Carlisle.
@alexwright60389 жыл бұрын
the thing I don't understand is why they removed the double chimney in the overhaul, why would you remove a performance improvement? The loco is already not authentic with the addition of signalling gear and modern sticks to warn of high voltage and the like. It's throwing away better coal and water efficiency or greater sustained power output.
