Fabulous content! Keep posting! Army vet, as well (4 ID). I am an M157(wagon) and M278 (CLS) owner. Both engines have updated chains; both engines experienced oil intrusion to the harness at 20k original miles (remedied with new harness/ECU/4x CSPSs (M278)) and cleaner/2x new CSPSs for (M157)). I swap engine oil every 3500 miles (0W-40 Mobile 1 with BG additive) I will be switching to Liqui Moly on next servicing. Compression tests OK on both engines (knock on wood). I also don't hot rod either of them very often; just a spirited spank every now and then to "reboot" the engine cadences. Top tier premium fuel always.

I am servicing all my AMG's myself. M157, M278. Never had a mayor issue because I strictly follow the service manual. Oil change every 8K Km. Transmission 30K Km. Do it right and enjoy your AMG's. Do it wrong you pay until "All Money Gone".

@Zzafari7 lean has a distinct odor and it means the car was ran opposite of rich meaning less fuel and a hotter burn. Rich smell is just fuel a lot of fuel!

31:34 On the engine ecu you have an automated electronic compression test that gets you the same results as the manual compression test so no need to waste 1 hour dismantling and screwing in the test gauge just be sure you know how to read it.😊

With wanting to know the technicalities before deciding on building or saving an engine, a manual compression test is the only true way to know. Never go off a scan tool for something this expensive.

It was just a friendly advise , you shouldn't get offended like this. I worked on the electronic design of these cars as an engineer for daimler , using original equipment to do a electronic compression test is the same as using a manual compression test but takes 1 minute and you even get the difference test graphs but you only need to know how to read it, the diagnosis tool named STAR will instruct you when to use a leak test tool and diagnose further , in a mb workshop there are a lot of cars and pulling out plugs is time consuming so my colegues design this test . I'm sorry that you took my advice the wrong way 😔

Thank you. Terrific instructional. How much for the fix? As owner of 70 kmi '14 e550a with this motor, seeing the problems is very helpful. Also scary. No problems yet. Can't imagine rebuilding this beast with such low mileage. My Nissans all passed 250kmi with no issues. Really feel taken by MB, putting time bombs on the road. All of these problems were avoidable in design...and they use limited lifetime plastics too..

My 2015 E63 S has a weaping rear main seal and seems to be burning some oil (ir gets drivrn qhite gard tho) I have no other known issues and am very familiar wirh the platform, but the KBB value has dropped $12K since I bought it and the value is now underwager vs my loan amount remaining. Im thinking of getting out of it rather than dumping money into her, even though I LOVE this car and the M157, my financial situation ahs deteriorated in the 2 years since I got her and looking at $5-10K in work is now not really feasible anymore. Given that, what should I expect to pay to have a borescope check for the cylinder scoring and a pressure/leak down test performed?

Question, the oil coming from the valves is it due to the valve stem seal failing? Or is that due to carbon buildup on the back of the valve.

Mostly all these engines have the oil coming in oil oil buildup plugs if not positioned properly. I don't see anyone saying why.

It's coming from the rings and being blown up to the valves. On a non direct injection the fuel would normally spray this off. This is why carbon cleanings like walnut blasting is done. Be sure to watch that video we put out!

Is there a root cause for the cylinder scoring? It seems like its a design issue from mercedes, but is there something to prevent this issue, or do you just have to roll the dice on an engine?

It's roll of dice. It is indeed a design issue. We have discovered that for emissions purposes, the oil pump solenoid restricts pressure under 3000 rpm enough that it will not activate the oil squirters in the cylinder walls, so basically unless you're driving it is S+ or M and controlling a higher shift point, you'll be starving your cylinder walls of oil 99% of the typical driving time. This has led to better overall performance of the engine and feel of the car while driving, even ironing out the lurching/bucking from a stop issue. Best thing to do is pay for a PPI and have the cylinder borescoped during that PPI

@@dontsleeponit7951 None so far. Look at the forums on MBWorld, there is a massive thread about it that I have also contributed to. It's running strong and healthy for my E63 S, and I drive it HARD. Honestly, just for even the driving characteristics improvements, it's worth it even if it lowered the longevity of this engine to me. This engine and car is a rare case to ever see 200,000 miles and you're going to be putting in $5-20K in repairs and maintenance to get it to 150,000 RELIABLY. I love the car, but the value has fallen through the floor, especially for the S-model for some reason... So buy them cheap and enjoy them while they last, but I've changed my opinion on keeping this car "forever". It's simply just not built to last if you drive it like it should be.

Around those miles on m157 is going to hit you on the pocket. Turbo cooling lines goes bad, heater valve breaks “ major cooling leak “ camshaft sensor goes bad , torque converter goes bad, high pressure fuel pump also, shifter goes bad, and more

Looks like owner didn't care tomaintain this thing properly. Everybody who cares knows to check for oil in the harness from the cam sensors. And obviously slacking on the checks bit him in the ass lol.
