Making phones and computers is one thing but making car is a job of another dimension. Even though the trend is towards electric vehicles this does not mean that they are something completely new and different from conventional cars. They are still the same cars just without an engine and some more softwares. There is an entire history and a branch of manufacturing in industrial engineering regarding car design and manufacturing. If anyone thinks that a computer making company can make a world-class car in its first attempt (or frankly even in its 10th attempt) without any major help from a great car building brand is just stupid. Software and all those shiny features is just a small part of a big machine which is a car. I am saying all this as a mechanical engineer.

Once Ratan Tata sir had said in an interview, getting into auto industry was the most exciting yet the most challenging business one can ever build. Now also we can see even after making so many good cars & even after acquiring JLR, Tata still haven't reached that level of engine refinement & reliability like Maruti & Toyota resp.
