Subscription plans to use features of a car you buy is ridiculous. Mahindra sells 4-5 lakh cars each year. Locking the features already available in the car and charging thousands per user, to unlock them for a year, is next level greed. It's not like they are producing something new each year or the use of features costs anything to the company. It requires basic maintenance cost which is dirt cheap for a car company. As an engineer working for a luxury car company, i can definitely say that despite whatever you feel, people while buying cars were preferring more screen presense and more panels, which made the companys to shift towards increasingly more number of touch screen panels, thought now it might seem like it's too much, it is always the demand that drives these changes, the same goes for Indian market preferring SUVs instead of Sedans. Might not be the perfect scenario of petrol heads, but in the end it's the sale that matters the most, so it is what it is...

Suppose you have an accident and then you have to calm yourself and say "Engine On" etc for the car to start. So glad to see that Euro NCAP will penalize overuse of touchscreens. Bharat NCAP should also implement it otherwise this craze will not end.

It’s about cutting costs. When physical buttons are removed, complexity moves to software and that can be patched and fixed even after car is sold. One mistake in a button means that the user has to bring the car to service center and a part needs to be replaced. Tesla started the whole thing and it suits them because they are so good at software and now everyone is copying them. It also aligns with the tastes of smartphone generation who want everything on a screen.

Personally a mic of both is good. Touchscreens have the benefit of allowing more features without making it too clustered. Yet there are various functions that should be kept to buttons like climate controls, Volume, next music, change modes etc. Buttons should be kept but screens should be kept as well. Screens should not be too big that they get distracting but not too small that they are difficult to use. Voice assist has it's benefits but currently it is unreliable and so we can't say it would be used in the short term. Anyways, it can't replace the feeling of buttons and slightly lacks functionality of screens. Like you can't remembername of every feature to call it.

Can you find a button on touch screen & then push it without even taking your off eyes of the road . Naa never with touch screen even that has big touch buttons. With physical buttons you can easily do it , as physical buttons may come in different shapes which let your hands know what that button is for just by feel & they are at specific spots so with muscle memory one can find them without taking their eyes out of the road with one hand . Another plus point on physical buttons is if one button doesn't work then 1 button doesn't work but with touch screen systems if software is buggy or whole touch system fails then nothing can be done to ACs , sound systems , . Its like a single point failure point .
