Hey Arun, 4th year pharmacy student here. The microbial growth experiment performed in the video is sadly flawed. The reason why you saw colonies of bacteria in 16:23 in the agar inoculated with the phone sanitizer gadget sample was most likely not caused due to the product not working as intended. The cleaner might as well work properly but some considerations were overlooked. When performing the inoculation, the area around the agar has to be aseptic, meaning free of organisms. This is usually achieved in the lab placing a bunsen burner very close to the manipulation area for example but maybe a lighter could do the trick at home. Also, I bet the cotton swabs were not very sterile to begin with and could contain some bacteria in it. It is also quite interesting the fact that not too many many colonies formed as indeed, phones, hands and other things we use on a daily basis are quite contaminated with bacteria and other microorganisms. This is could be caused by an inadecuate temperature to grow the bacteria among other factors. Aside from the critic, great iniative performing the experiment!

@ well, not quite. What we do in lab is to use sterilized material to avoid cross-contamination while working in the aforementioned aseptic space. This way we minimise the variables of cross-contamination of the agar plates. Control groups are there for us to control ONE single variable at a time in the experiment so as to easily determine the cause of something happening in the experiment. In this example, to swab the unsterile swabs in unsterile air would introduce two variables (the swabs and the air) and it would likely show colonies after a while and so the meaning of a control group would be lost. If u were performing the experiment in the ideal working conditions you could do it and be valid. In fact, the way he did it in the video is testing whether the “experiment works” as he said in the video, he is testing whether anything will grow in the agar which in this case would be somewhat the right approach.

@ because he most likely did not open the control agar plaque and therefore it really isn’t in the same conditions. He does this to make sure the experiment works but he is not testing the efficacy of the UV disinfectant.
