Bitwig 5.2 is in beta and comes with a ton of new sculpting plugins like; Sculpt, Focus, Tilt, Over, Compressor+ and much more!
In this video I wanted to try out some of these for processing real drums and electric guitars!
Let me know if you enjoyed the video!

Thanks Mattias this is the best presentation of the new plugins for Bitwig I have seen. I would like to ask how much does the new GPU Visual Interface improves for audio. Have you opened big arrangements and test with them?

Hi Boris, thanks. This was just my very first boot of 5.2. And I wanted to see how these plugins work on real instrument recordings. Which I believe is the true test of fidelity. 😄 I’ve not done any other tests except this one. So i will need to get back to you on this. 😃☕️🥁

@AncientGranules yes Im gonna do some performance tests, and more video tests with these new tools on acoustic guitar / vocals. But today its valborg here in sweden. So family time! 🎉🏆🦊🤷‍♂️😄☕️🥁🎸 and I just made / released two new episodes in the Bitwig Ambient Music course so I need a short break. 💪🤘😉 dunno how much diff there will be in performance on my M1 Max since its not very similar to PC with extra dedicated GPU. I never felt gui was slow in Bitwig in the past. We’ll see…

Hey Mattias! I believe only the analyzer part of the compressor is 4-band, so in effect you basically have a 4-band int/ext sidechain analyzer and the compression itself happens across one band.

Hey Mattias, long time. Sounding good man. I'm thinking one of the reasons they may have re-written the GUI might be a path towards it running on a tablet. Pure speculation, but it would make sense right. Hmmm. I really like the new EQs and Clipper. They sound very good and quite easy to use. Alright, well nice to see you! Ciao!

@MattiasHolmgren

I use Logic Pro, Bitwig and FL Studio simultanously and depending on project etc. Sample pack creation and sample management is often handled in FL Studio because it's superior for that with Edison, markers for sample export etc. Logic Pro for game / film scoring. Bitwig for electronic / hybrid music. Vocal / guitar recording = Logic Pro. That's in short how I work with them. How about you?

Hey, glad to hear you enjoyed the presentation. I feel its eseential to get a solid multiband compressor like compressor+ and the new EQs are really good sweetspots for recorded audio / instruments. yeah I thought the best way to show these new sound sculpting tools of Bitwig 5.2 with real recorded instruments because the audio has more grit and dirt than sterile synth sounds. Real instrument audio recordings you can mold and bring in/out details with such tools. Like my drum recording is recorded stereo stem of 8 individual tracks. So sculpting such a stereo file can bring a lot to the details of the overall sound. Same with dynamic playing on the electric guitar straight into audio interface. I’m glad my effort came across. Though I only had 1 hour to record / shoot while my 2 year old was sleeping.😴😂🥁🎸😄

Hm. But still not fixed basic issues like that beta-ish piano roll and the unablity to quick switch tracks to mono? And also I'm still waiting for something like a current-track in FL studio. I would love to buy bitwig but I think it's still incomplete in basic things that I simply expect from a modern DAW. Also the support never gets back to you when you reach out. Waiting for version 6...

Interesting, I have yet to find anything in the piano roll that doesn't work exactly as I expect it should - no less so than any of the other DAWs I own or have used. The only issue I have are a few improvements to the curve tools for automation curves. Curious what tools or functions you miss? Also, the support (the very few times I have needed it) has always been very responsive to me.

Whats your problem with the piano roll?
@TheQxY
@TheQxY 10 күн бұрын
I do think the piano roll can be better. But Bitwig community are the biggest complainers ever. I keep hearing people say there is no key highlights, but you can just use Key Filter. There are many ways to make audio mono. Why does it matter the track itself is mono? Bitwig is different software, so learn how to use it instead of complaining all the time it does not have a one-to-one feature set to another DAW you use,just use that DAW then.....

Nice. Very cool, positive start of comment make algorithm happy and keeps it visible. Positive. Good. Super. One tipp, you started talking about the pultec emulation, boosted the lowend which ran the signal way hotter into the peak limiter at the right end of the chain... this is not A/B but falling for the louder is better trick and changing the sound through the limiter getting into the game... rofl! Yeah, it's the pultec that makes it nice an punchy ... rofl. The long release of the peak limiter which is clearly shown, even changes the level ratio of the drum hits, just look at the graph of the gain reduction... And btw shocked & massiv for the 5.2 update!? Really... I'm shocked by the massive clickbait of the video title.
@MattiasHolmgren
@MattiasHolmgren 8 күн бұрын
Lol irl rofl 🦊🤘Feed the machine. Boost low / attentuate low mids with Sculpt, yes obviously also pushing the limiter a tad more. My little quick demo video shows what you can do with the tools anyway. Which is the important on an update. And I feel its miles more important to show these tools on real recordings rather that sterile synth lines. And of course you can dig in and finetune whatever to suit whatever. But I roll my way of presenting and improvising with the tools. More power to the hits. Thanks for engaging. 😄

@@MattiasHolmgrenA tad? From nothing going on at the limiter to like 6 db attenuation... ;-) The thing is, dialing in values in Sculpt and telling viewers this is now way better, is missleading. Especially beginners might think I need this magic thing and a miracle will happen by a EQ which surrounded itself with the mythical aura of pultec. It won't. That makes this part of the video less credible. Not a general critic, it's only about this part of the video which might raise expectations that cannot be meet. Just put Sculpt to an test with Bertom EQ Analyzer. It's interesting analytical results. I've seen enough people trying to sell snakeoil. Not this channel! But better add some honest critics among all the applause, I thought... -- Btw: Limiters working rather fast, so when thinking of a 80hz wave which has 12,5 msec wavelenght the limiter will crush that wave and thus adds harmonics to the signal ...

All of these DAW updates are sweet, but most of the best music was without a DAW in the era between the 1970s -and 1990s. We are relying too much on technology and not the creative process.

I have Bitwig but they haven't improved the CPU resources and it eats more and more the system, you need an Apple Max Pro of 3000 dollars so that it doesn't start to crash at 20 tracks, FL Studio overcomes it widely without crashing...

Not updating. This year my money goes somewhere else. Not bitwig. And looking around I’m not the one. I hope there will be a lot of paying customers skipping update plan. Maybe then bitwig will learn something and start to implement features that cannot be replaced with 3rd party tools like compressor or eq. Also I heard that new editing with keyboard shortcuts are more confusing than helping as they literally do opposite things in different editors. Switching editing styles force you to remember what style you are in. In my opinion on scale 1-10 this update gets 1. For GUI execration. Even I don’t need it. Without gui would be -5. On the same scale.
@EsoVieTH
@EsoVieTH 10 күн бұрын
And the same argument can be made for scales in the piano roll. Why implement it when you can use scaler? I would never even touch a scale function, but if they implemented it i wouldn’t care and I would definitely not write angry comments about it on youtube. Take a deep breath and make some music instead

I welcome native plug-ins as I am on a platform 3rd party plug-in developers tend to ignore completely.
@vroteg
@vroteg 9 күн бұрын
@@sablesanctumI think developers don’t mean to ignore Linux support. The decision not to support Linux mostly driven by demand. There are not many DAWs that support Linux in the first place. And non of flagship daws support it. If Live, Cubase, Studio One had support you would see dramatic increase in Linux supported plugins. But at the moment it’s just not profitable for plugin makers to support it.
@vroteg
@vroteg 9 күн бұрын
@@EsoVieTHI’m quite calm but I see you a bit nervous for some reason. Based on what I have seen online on forums and in private groups there are more users that want scale awareness in piano roll than new compressor. And plugin you mentioned is not a solution. I’m not writing angry comments but constructively criticizing decisions of the company I would like to support with my own money. We are not donating to company. We pay for what company offer. And for me and many other user bigwig didn’t offer anything major in the last couple of updates. But they could well boost their revenue by including at least one highly requested features. If they don’t I don’t pay. Simple.
@sablesanctum
@sablesanctum 9 күн бұрын
@@vroteg I am aware of the market situation, and I apologize for using the word "ignore" in this context. A feeling of being ignored, doesn't necessarily make it so. But it sure makes it easier to continue to support those who do provide, even if they prioritize to the detriment of users on other platforms.
