Every walk in salon in my area is not sanitary. Infections are on the rise, yet people still go there. Our state is short on inspectors and there's not enough of them to keep up with the amount of salons opening up. It's crazy. I focus on sanitation and client care and doing well educating people. You guys have great advice and following it has made me more successful. Thanks! You guys are awesome!

So the realtor for our VERY small shopping center (4) retail spaces actually breeched our lease and put a walk-in Salon right next to our salon. Yep. Needless to say for me personally I didn’t even bat an eye because I know I have a different kind of client base. I was upset for our nail tech attempting to grow her business but honestly people walk in and say to us “I’m not interested in next door, do you have time?” Know your worth and focus on who you want in your chair, it will come to you. 💙

Around here the walk in salons are called chop shops. And they scam everyone too. They garage extra for gel but they use acrylic and just put a gel topcoat on....like what the heck man. I even had a salon refuse to do sculpted nails and they tried to tell me they are weak and will break.

As I was watching this I was nodding my head to every single word you guys said! It’s so true, I was very slow the first few months as my nails weren’t going to be amazing when I first qualified, I knew I needed to get better and then I found Young nails , best thing I ever did , I invested my money and had a few 1-2-1’s with Hannah Garbett plus group sessions I then bought all young nail products and took pictures to put on social media to let people know I had invested in my products, I took pictures of my log cabin where I work from I then thought what I could do different to other techs around me , I give my clients my full undivided attention, I listen to them and any problems they have and I emphasise with them , with this and upping my nail game I have more than doubled my clientele in the last month alone , I don’t worry about the walk in salons , I may take a couple of hours to do nails but my clients love coming to me as I give them nails they want plus the added bonus of someone to off load too , I work every single day to make sure my nails are getting better each time , I have followed lots of young nail mentors and I watch what they are doing , if you want to succeed you can’t just have an 8 hour day , I invest hours upon hours into my business because I want to make it work ! Love you guys ❤️❤️❤️

I am so glad that you guys brought this up. There is a need for both types of salons otherwise they wouldn't exist. I had been working at walk in salons for close to 10 years when I got burnt out and couldn't figure out what it was that was missing. There was no purpose anymore for me. I went back to school for aesthetics and got a job right out of school for a company that predominantly did appointments only with very few walk ins if time allowed. After working there for 2 years, I started to realize the importance of having clients come back like clockwork because that was money that you could depend on. My business changed and this was exactly what I was looking for. Those other salons that I worked at didn't really seem to offer that as an option. I felt like a machine and it was one person after the next. I guess it wasn't taught to do business like that. I went back to working in a nail salon after 2 years and continued to practice those methods and I was making more money working with appointments than I did with walk ins. I felt like me! Now that I am booth renting, I get to hear a lot of the frustrations that people have with these walk in salons and it makes to kindaaaaaaaa...........giddy. I get to charge for what I am worth and people see that after I am done with their service. I do things that those walk in nail salons don't and clients make comments about it in a positive way. This is how I see it. There is plenty of bad work out there and I will take advantage of the opportunity to make things right for someone that didn't get the service that they needed. I've been in this industry too long and I understand that there are still some old school salons out there that don't want to keep up with the trends. Some don't want to get continuing education so among my friends and colleagues, I am 10 steps ahead of them. I am understanding my market. I am running my business how I think it should be done and I'm obsessed!

Great thoughts!! I'm in the Bay Area and my issue with the walk in salon "competition" isn't because we are offering the same product/experience (we aren't) it's because I can only do one person at a time. Any client who wants to get a pedicure or their nails done with a friend is going to be there twice as long because it's me, not a situation with 20 pedicure bowls and manicure desks lined up and ready. I did a fundraiser for my kids school where for 2 weeks 20% of the services I did for school affiliated folks went to the school. I saw it as a great way to bring in clients and help the school. It went so well but I had 4 people who wanted to come in with a friend and being there for 2 1/2 hours while I did them back to back didn't work. 1 of them came in anyway and her friend came in another date that worked but the others never came in. That's the only thing that frustrates me. What I do is so different than what "they" do, if someone gives me a chance I know they'll be back. When people see there is another way out there, they usually prefer it and I appreciate that. With me you may be there for 90 minutes (I'm still new) but you get a lot of laughs and a counseling session. Not unlike if you parked it at bar and had a chat with the bartender in an old movie 😉

Walk-in salons, as you politely refer to them, are exactly why I started doing my own nails. Where I live, in Florida, there are 4 on every corner and they are all the same. No one speaks English, the price is never what their "menu" says, and they all do nails the same way. They HEAP on acrylic just to grind it all down, and after all that you still end up with huge, thick nails. If there is the slightest bit of lifting they'll start to pry it off (painfully) then charge you extra for that nail. I finally had enough. After researching what I could buy on Amazon and watching KZbin videos, I've been doing my own nails (with polygel or gel, I'm not confident enough yet to try acrylic). I'm learning and getting better. It takes me a longer time, but it's fun and I enjoy it. Plus, it keeps me off the streets and out of the bars on the weekends 😁.

A competitor for me was selling ferrets for $19.99. Mine were $79.95. Mine were hand raised and handled almost from the day they were born. My source for them actually was helping with national research for them. They were totally satisfaction guaranteed. The competition... I turned down "free" ferrets that were purchased there almost daily. They were inbred, bad-tempered, bit everyone... But the real laugh... After that pet shop sold one, they referred their customers to me for information... I always helped everyone who came to me. If they ended up keeping their bad-tempered "pets," guess where they came for supplies from then on??? It's ALL ABOUT customer satisfaction.... And knowing your product...😃

I'd like to specify that when I hear walk in salon I think of the salons that hire unlicensed people and crank out as many people as possible in the shortest amount of time, while doing extreme damage to clients nails and the nail field in general. And the day I see a walk in that is not like this I will not lump them all together.

I have the same story as Melissa R. I've only had my nails done in a walk in chop shop a few times. I can't understand them and have to ask my daughter what they said. The "boss" yelled at the girl that was doing my pedicure and she ran to the back room, he took over, then after 10 minutes she was back. I ended up with a nail fungus which I treated with tea tree oil and stopped it before it got bad. I would LOVE to find a professional nail tech that I could go to, understand and not have to worry if the tools were sterilized! So...I do my own nails and am getting pretty good at it, but only for me!

Hi Jane, unfortunately there are salons, walk ins and appointment based salons that do not practice proper disinfection. Keep looking for that perfect nail tech and never feel bad if you walk into a salon that is not clean to just turn around and walk out.

I find huge value in walk in appointments. I will take them as I know how it is to be a mother and worker and just get spur of moment feeling and want nails done. So I take that cash as if I don’t they will go spend that money elsewhere so I embrace it now rather than say no.. unless I honestly don’t have the time at all. Everyone looks online now and so correct online social media is the new phone book. I won’t take a client without properly cleaning and disinfecting my work area and salon. I rather have proper and protocols then make anyone sick. My health is just as important as my clients

Thank you both for this information, totally awesome as always! since the market isn't saturated as of yet at least not here in America and its predicted career-wise until about the year 2024, when you say that maybe the newbies like myself and have some time to get ourselves in order? 😜I believe that location location location is one of the best marketing tools and having business knowledge. As with any new business it always takes time to get off the ground, I've had two businesses in two different professions and it took me about a good two years to really get the clientele that I wanted before I start started seeing a difference in income. I think what I hear you both saying is that nail salons are popping up everywhere and they seem to be pretty close in proximity, which increases competition for clientele. I agree focusing on what you do and being the best at it will bring in the type of customers that you're seeking and frankly if we worry about everyone else we can never really hone in on our own skills and expertise and that's not good. lastly I would like to say that I think marketing and social media is really important, I've been thinking about how to do that so that it pays off. I noticed that some KZbinrs will have all of these people following them but no one of none of them live in their area there's got to be a way to draw clientele from your area from social media and the way that I think that can be done is on Facebook they ask you for your location and if you have a business page and tell them where you're at they will actually find people in your area and drive your advertising in that specific Direction. Just something to think about.💜💜💜💜💡

People don't know, what they don't know. Clients just assume these places are legal and sanitary. And most want cheap, fast, and the convenience of just walking in on top of it. Good as you may be, it's a little tuff to compete with these salons. How many times a client of mine will come in after not seeing her for 6 weeks for her to say," sorry, I was at Walmart a few weeks ago, and needed my nails done, so I just had them done there" uhhggg....just too many nail salons out there!

Walk ins did almost destroy my business. I used to do walk ins. In RSA people often get paid towards month end. That's when I'll be seeing 8 clients a day, some turn back, never come back and spread the word to others that my salon is always packed. Now I only do appointments. My regular clients are glad because the don't have to wait in line with fly by night clients who'll never come back. And in this business I've learnt to stop competing with others because I limit myself to what they can do or cannot do. Now I challenge myself further. I'm busy simply because in the short period of time I've been around, I'm doing great work and it's all self taught. The licenced technicians know me by name 😄 clients tell me. But walk ins are a no no for me. They can do that in other salons. Besides, my regulars love art so I make way more.

As a professional you should be qualified and have studied, be certified ,fully educated within your chosen profession, understanding health and hygiene in the work place and its implications on the public and then have worked with the public To perfect and master your craft whilst Continuing to keep up-to-date with new techniques and procedures If you do this then good luck to you, if you haven’t done the above then don’t call yourself a professional and most certainly don’t open up a walk-in nail business ,there making money ...?low low cost nails come at the cost of the exploitation of others in many cases Witnessed it first hand ,When I first went looking for my first nail tech job I thought why not try out one of these walk in bars knowing no better and being naive. I’d get plenty of experience and surely I would get paid well because it’s so busy ,would you believe I was offered £2.50 an hour for 10 hr day 6 days a week Suffice to say I started my business the very next day and I’ve never looked back ,we can’t keep being naive to some of these bars exploiting their staff and putting public at risk There is a great need for legislation in the UK regarding nail bars and certification , I would say they do not affect my flow of business but they do affect my pricing increments ,it has a limitation due to there low prices most people have a monthly cap where they will draw a line if prices go to high.
