Fun fact: You can actually hear City of Color heavily slowed down in Inkopolis Square's ambiance. Also, Shooting Starfish actually samples Maritine Memory, as it not only has City of Color and Calamari Inkantation, but it uses sound effects from the song too (which is the case for all the Octo Canyon tracks). In fact, Maritine Memory's vocals reversed perfectly match up with Shooting Starfish. It's kinda creepy...

my personal belief is that it is a bootstrap paradox! since we know that the splatoon games existed in the splation universe during our time, there is a high likelyhood that, simply, the splatoon series and calamari inkantation became popular enough to be ingrained into the populace, and becoming basically a self-fulfilling prophecy so, simply, calamari inkantation is ingrained into the DNA of the splatoon species because the splatoon games existed in human times, and became popular with the humans

YEAAAAH I love this theory!! Also one detail that I've seen someone point out is that both the 3Mix and Wave Goodbye have non-inkling voices either vocalizing (in 3Mix they're like.. a background chorus) and in Wave Goodbye those voices are the ones singing the lyrics to Calamari Inkantation. They sound very different from how the inklings usually sound in music, so I like to think that it's kind of like.. the last will of humans shining through. I can imagine that living in a dome underground for so long, longing to see the sky again would give a bit of a hit to morale. So the humans made this super uplifting song to inspire them and motivate them to keep going. And then when this song, filled with the hopes and dreams of humans longing to see the sky again, is heard by octolings, it breaks their brainwashing and fills them with that same human desire to see the sky. This song just has a death grip on my brain and I just absolutely love love love all the little details that's been snuck into so many tracks. =v=

It's actually really simple, Octavio only really creates propaganda, from what I've seen quite a few folks have gotten confused about a translation of an answer from an interview and mistakenly thought Octavio brainwashes his subjects but no. That's just a misunderstanding due to translation stuff, he only creates propaganda music pieces, other than that he's apparently a good enough leader to stay in power for 100 years or so. If he wasn't a good leader he would've been usurped by now, no? Not a surprise that his subjects even the ones who left would still like him well enough.

one of my fave bits of sploon music trivia: in sploon 1, when you scan a squid sister amiibo, you get to listen to a solo song from that idol; callie sings Bomb Rush Blush, marie sings Tide Goes Out. in sploon 2's story mode, the theme that plays when you meet marie (Low Tide) is an arrangement of her solo song. but also! in the fight against octavio at the end, the song at the start (Bomb Rush Blush - DJ Octavio feat. Callie) is an arrangement of callie's song. when marie shows up to help, the next track (Tidal Rush - DJ Octavio feat. Callie vs. Marie) is a mix of both their tracks together.

it happens at random while smallfry is out of the backpack and i don't think it can be triggered on purpose through any means, so it's possible they just didn't sing it throughout your playthrough. they can also sing a different song after you beat the game (not going to say what song in particular just out of courtesy for anyone who hasn't but you can probably guess pretty easily)

The name Shi-ho-shy is directly referencing one of the splatoon composers' names, Shiho Fujii. Whats cool is that she was the one specifically in charge of composing all of the squid sisters' tracks, and also wrote the lyrics to the songs. She is in a sense, their in-universe producer :)

Actually, within the lore of splatoon 3, the octolings of the splatlands and splatsville were not in Octavio’s army. They are ethically different and have their own history. Shiver’s lore discusses her family and clan with no reference to Octavio or the underground cities. I think a new interview confirms shiver and Frye went to middle school together. The reason the octolings and inklings in inkopolis separated was due to war for land as the sea levels rised.

There's an obscure detail that everybody seems to miss, if you pay attention to both Spicy calamari inkantation and the 3mix, Shiver's high note in the middle of the chorus is imitating the traditional flute that plays during the pre chorus of SCI, she sings the exact same tune and the fact that tradition is something of great relevance to the character, herself being the one that incorporates that specific instrument her way is just so cool

When Calamari Inkantation came on, my brain itched with familiarity and it was only after listening a bit more that I thought, "Hey, this sounds kinda like that one part in Fork Lifter from Rhythm Heaven Fever." I do think this is a stretch, however, considering the only similarity between the two songs is the first four notes (the Fork Lifter section best heard in the infamous Remix 10). I'm not yet a big Splatoon fan by any means (I haven't played the games and the only way I'm exposed to it is through my bf), so what do I know, but it was just a passing thought I couldn't help mentioning.

You can create a tiny melody out of both of them! As far as I know, it doesn't have any particular song the sound bites belong to, but I thought it was worth noting. :)

I know of a bunch for Commander Tartar's theme, there's a ton in 2 and Octo Expansion for Off the Hook, there's still Bomb Rush Blush and Tide Goes Out for Squid Sisters and I don't think Deep Cut has anything as of now other than you being able to hear the theme of Anarchy Splatcast when you're standing right outside their window in Splatsville and their solos during the first 24 hours of Splatfest being variations of their solos in Anarchy Rainbow.

Yes, Splatoon, the game series with my favorite soundtrack. Great video, I think the only motif you missed, (which I guess could be considered a remix, although I wouldn't count it as one) is the most recent one, that being how in Splatoon 3's splatfests, each member of Deep Cut has their own theme that plays in the hub during the first day, and then the second day's song, Anarchy Rainbow, has elements of each idol's individual songs.

I know that a very interesting and obscure little "music secret," but also just fun fact that I ended up hearing in Splatoon 2 a while back was that in Salmon Run, when you down a Scrapper (immobilize, not splat it), it plays a little jingle on a car horn. I remember hearing the horn for the first time and realizing that the jingle that you hear is the same one as the jingle that plays after you clear a stage in the Splatoon 1 Octo Canyon Hero Mode. I thought this was interesting cuz if you look into the lore some, you'll find out that the Salmonids weapons are actually manufactured by the Octarians, who's your main foe in the Splatoon 1 campaign. It's a nice little nod to some obscure lore, but that's kinda why I find it so cool.
