Judy Garland was off her tits on uppers and downers given to her so the film could get made on time, the shooting schedule was extreme. This started her history of substance abuse which led to her death.

DA SUPADUPA yeah the mother started it and lied about the pep pills, so the studios gave her the same medication plus a steady supply of sleeping pills to knock her out at night. So she was getting twice as much as the studios thought, even tho what they gave her alone was much more than enough and way more than any child should ever take.

Alex Smith Lorna Lucy has spoken out about a lot of it, even wrote a book that was later a movie. Then, there’s also an interview from an E! documentary that was about her, her family doctor’s wife spoke out even though it sounds like she was more taking up for her husband and the studios.

What people don't think about, in picking on the MGM "Wizard," is that all movies present dangers and difficulties to the people involved in making them. Glenn Strange, playing the Frankenstein Monster in "Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein," broke his ankle during filming. Lon Chaney, Jr., who played the Wolf Man in that movie, shot a scene or two as the Monster while Glenn was recovering.

I always thought that the reason they used the same actor for the Wizard as the Wizard's guard was because we were supposed to know that it was the same person.....The Wizard at first could not let them in, lest he be exposed so he went out in disguise to tell them to leave...Then he was moved by Dorothy's story and said "I'll get you in to see the Wizard," because he knew he had the authority as the Wizard himself to make that decision. How else do we explain that the Wizard who was really just a normal mortal man, knew ahead of time what each of them wanted?

+Andrew Grove Shirley was ten years old, which was a perfect age for the role; in the book, Dorothy was possibly as young as six and certainly no older than ten. When Fairuza Balk played Dorothy in "Return to Oz," she was all of nine years old. Yekaterina Mikhaylovskaya, who played Ellie Smith, the Russian version of Dorothy in a 1994 adaptation of "Wizard," was even younger.

A few other things not mentioned: 1) The Wicked Witch originally said and did some more scary stuff, which got cut after the reactions of some preview audiences. One thing is that her skywriting originally said "SURRENDER DOROTHY OR DIE". If you pay attention the Cowardly Lion reading this out loud, you can discern that the last two words have been cut. 2) In addition to the elimination of the costly "Jitterbug" number, there was also an immense parade sequence in the Emerald City when Dorothy and the gang returned with the Wicked Witch's broom. This too got cut to shorten the movie, and it involved hundreds of celebrating extras. The only footage of it that survives appears in the original movie preview, for just a split-second. 3) Speaking of "SURRENDER DOROTHY", that was achieved by aiming the camera upwards towards a bowl of milk directly above it, and the words were written by a syringe filled with black ink - which had to be done backwards so the letters would read correctly.

It's funny how back when we were kids watching this movie for the first time that the snow scene felt genuine and magical, yet little did we know that "snow" was actually extremely dangerous. This movie might be a classic and played a key role in the history of movie making, but damn did the actors get the short end of the stick. From the incident with the original Tin Man to the witch catching on fire, it was a mess. What were they thinking with Aluminum dust? And using fire in unsafe ways? All things considered, this movie was magical, the sacrifices made to create it and to give us a timeless classic were all worth it in the end. Unfortunately, many of the actors paid a price that lasted a life time. Some even dying from it.

@@MaskedMan66 "It", obviously refers to the aforementioned disrespect and cruelty given to Judy Garland as a child actress. For example, slapping a child because she giggled during a scene - who does that?!!) That is blatant abuse. By the way, you might want to check your colossal ego at the door. @MaskedMan66
@MaskedMan66 5 жыл бұрын
Aforementioned? You didn't say a thing except, "They were pretty cruel to Judy Garland," which I already said wasn't true. Cruelty involves a deliberate and malicious desire to hurt someone, and that wasn't anyone's intention. I will tell you "who does that." A former prize fighter turned movie director named Victor Fleming, a husband and the father of two little girls. A normal person, in other words. And you might like to know the whole story: Bert Lahr's crying routine as the Cowardly Lion was so funny that Judy got into a laughing fit. She tried to control herself, but she kept laughing and ruined take after take. Up against the wall and running out of time, Fleming took Judy aside and slapped her to get her to take things seriously. She did so and finished the scene without breaking up-- though even in the finished film, you can see her mouth twitch. :-) Now this is the bit you need to hear. After the scene wrapped, Fleming, who had once had his nose broken in the ring, took someone aside and said, "I want you to slug me and break my nose again." "Why?" asked the man. "Because I hated what I did to that little kid." Judy happened to overhear this, and she sauntered out from behind a prop tree. "I won't break your nose," she said to Fleming, "but I will kiss it." So saying, she stood on tiptoe and did. No-one died and I am scarcely a king. I have, however, researched this movie for decades and know a few things, things that anyone else can know and pass on as I do. Like now you can tell that story to anyone who brings up the slap to try and slander Victor Fleming.

The claim that MGM wanted Shirley Temple but couldn't get her has been stated a lot, but has also been refuted. The Oz movie brilliantly tells Baum's moral that we can beat the elites. The Wizard (government) is just a man behind the curtain who has no special powers. And the farmers (Scarecrow) and factory workers (Tin Man) are smart and are heartfelt. To fight oppression (Lion) takes courage even though we're scared. And with all money leading to the government (yellow brick / gold road) we have the right to make our own currency from real silver (Ruby slippers differing from the book) and not accept fiat currency. "Keep tight inside them, their magic must be very powerful or she wouldn't want them so badly."

The Wizard of Oz book series were specifically written for the purpose of Luciferian mind control and the re-programming or reinforcement of children’s existing programming. Children must be regularly re-triggered and re-traumatised for the artificially induced neural pathways to stay open, and those naturally existing pathways that were forcibly closed, to remain shut.

This movie will never be the same after I discovered what happened on and off set. Judy garland (Dorothy) was put on a starvation diet, was given drugs and pills to keep her awake and was often touched in sexual ways by the directors and the munchkins... it makes me so sad that such a great movie has all this dark stuff behind it...

Artistic_ Fangirl_trash You know what... everybody is basically trashing this iconic movie that has been a huge part of most all of our lives growing up especially those of us that are in the age grp of 70 on down! I use that age loosely it goes up as well! I’m in my late 50s and I’ve watched this movie at least 40 or more times every yr I watch this movie and have since I was a little girl and when I was little believe me commercials were barely a thing it was nice compared to now!!!!! Anyways I loved the movie and still do I understood the movie even as a small child I figured it out but it didn’t change my opinion about the movie or the characters in it nor what may or may not have happened back stage. Bc this stuff happens pretty much on every set of every movie that’s filmed. So what’s the big deal? I mean I’m not demoralizing what happens to ppl not by a long shot but what happens happens... unless women/men take action and report it to authorities then it’s assumed to be ok! So if your ok w that as an Actor then the public has no say about any of it... therefore it’s a mute point! In other words LET IT GO PPL THATS THEY’RE AFFAIR SO TO SPEAK! And if you have issue w this them all you can do is write to these Actors and encourage them to press charges if they don’t then it’s assumed they don’t care or it was ok or all the above! So move on to something else don’t drag this wonderful movie down!!!!

Judy began to experience bipolar disorder around this time,probably as a result of her medication and the breakdown of her parents marriage initially.She was showing symptoms then and those that knew say that she was what would be called "forward",in other words ,she was promiscuous.She had a life long battle with the disorder and she was hospitalised although she was never given any drug treatment.It must have been tough for the adolescent Judy to be described as fat by adults and men at that.I'm sure that rocked her self esteem.

She wasn't "put on a starvation diet," she was just put on a diet. EVERYONE-- not just Judy Garland-- was prescribed pills for such purposes. She was not molested by anybody, certainly not by Victor Fleming, who was a father of two girls himself. As a former prizefighter, he'd have clocked anyone who tried anything with his daughters, so he wasn't about to mess with anyone else's.
