If you're surprised with the "instrumentation" on this song, you should listen the rest of Medúlla. Pretty much the whole album is an a capella masterpiece. It was kinda hard on the ears the first time for me, but nowadays I've came to appreciate it a lot haha

I remember hearing this song for the first time, and I recall it being sort of strange so hear. After a little while it grew on me though and is still one of the nicest things I’ve heard

If I remember correctly, the Olympics wouldn't let her sing live. Björk insisted on singing live, but the Olympics wouldn't budge (because "shows" like these never allow singers to sing live because it could backfire and create a bad show, ultimately). So, she recorded a playback live version where she sang it in full and then lipsynced to it in the performance. This is actually the only performance of hers that I can think of where she lipsynced.

Theres a performance of either Violently Happy or Army of Me where she lip synched but cant find it now. I think it was Top of the Pops or another similar show

I once read, that the reason is that the tapes with no voice recorded were accidentally destroyed while transfered to the Athens. So they could only use tapes with vocals, that's why she refused to pretended, and not using any mic. But I don't know if it's legit (:

Bedtime stories sung by Madonna, was composed by Björk. And perhaps, not coincidentally, it is a most crazy video and different that all of Madonna has ever done. Bjork is a universe of interesting and high-level sounds. She is amazing. Not only, but look about his album BIOPHILIA and his creative process. It's worth it too hear, Utopia, Homogenic, Debut, Bastards... She's amazing!

Actually the whole Medúlla album is 'stripped' in a special way. She recorded it predominantly with vocals (live and sampled/mixed) and minimal instrumentation

Bjork released a version of "oceania" as a duet with Kelis which is really stunning. Medulla the album this song is from is a really amzing album to listen to and has layers of sounds and vocals. You should check out some of her eraly videos like "Big Time Sensuality" which is just a brilliant track and the video is just so joyus. Bjork is a true original he music is constantly evolving and she embraces new tecchnology too and she always creates amazing videos.The original video for "Oceania" is really stunning visually you should react to it.I lve that Bjork just forges her own unique musical path.

Yes, more Björk please!! Great review, and I think you have picked up on some very important points with the power of her voice, the background "instrumentation" and the lyrical quality. I would suggest to listen to more Homogenic album songs (the same album that "Bachelorette" came from). Knowing how closely you listen to the instrumentation, I think you will really enjoy the various little wittering sounds and deep powerful "volcanic" rumbles on that album. I would suggest "Joga" and "All Is Full of Love" in particular (although if you want to be challenged, you can also listen to "Pluto" but it's perhaps a harder sell as it's quite atypical). You can also listen to songs from the Vespertine album which is also a soundscape feast but in a much smaller way, with liberal use of music box. "Pagan Poetry", "Hidden Place" or any other song really from the album are my suggestions ("Heirloom" is also really worth a listen). The Medulla album from which "Oceania" came from is also worth graduating to, but it may be easier for you to get into Björk in the two albums I mentioned above before moving on to that.

Bjork's Vocal Cadence is Soo Unique as you say, 2 or 3 words and you know who's singing. The background singers actually use a technique called Throat Singing, if not mistaken, Causing those low reverberating tones. Her Discography is 🤯🤯🤯.

Actually no throat singing on this song, but on others from the Medulla album. Throat singing doesn't sound like singing at all, you can't mistake it. In oceania there is just computer-enhanced choir.

I was a huge fan of all her work, albums, remixes, videos and concerts from Debut to Vespertine and of course Dancer in the Dark, but Medulla and all her following albums and videos after really disapointed me... It's sad I know. Except : WANDERLUST from Volta album (2007) You have to see and react to this amazing video...

Actually she was not singing live because the Olympic organization didn't let her, but she accept to perform with two conditions, she would sing a live recorded version of the song and she was not going to use microphone, because she won't to fool the audience

Phenoms can never be duplicated. Prince, David Bowie and Bjork are incomparable, IMHO. Bjork live prior to 2001 was epic. Bjork follows her own inner muse. Few musical artist are in that realm.
