People always go on about Homogenic, but for me, Vespertine is Björk at her absolute best. Utterly astounding, and that little greek chorus of "she loves him" in Pagan Poetry gives me chills even 20+ years later. Also LOVE seeing the look on your face when there's something you're surprised by or really digging, like at 16:36. My Top 3: Heirloom, Pagan Poetry, It's Not Up To You.

Welcome to the Unison fanclub. Seriously, this is why I subscribed. Extremely pleased to see you enjoy and appreciate Vespertine. It's by far my favourite album ever, and Unison is my undisputed favorite song of all time. I mentioned before that for almost all of Björk's albums she creates these universes in which they live and creatively explores pretty grand themes (the earth, the universe, heaven and hell, etc); Vespertine is a bit of an anomoly because it's a microcosm of love and closeness that permeates everything on the album. It's something she won't replicate on this level until you listen to Vulnicura, which I think most fans would consider Vespertine's sister album. From here on out, the albums will feel a lot grander in concept. Next up, Medulla! Have a nice weekend.

She wrote and created the beats and structures on her laptop on her own, wanting that beauty and intimacy that would be in complete contrast to Dancer in the Dark's horror. She even had music boxes made, which you hear frequently. Pagan Poetry was the last song she wrote for the album, which is why it sounds heavier than the other tracks. Vespertine - Live at Royal Opera House would be an amazing treat for you to also review. It's visually as arresting as the music on Vespertne.

Wow. Love this journey. Found you a couple of days ago and love your thoughts from Debut, Post, Homogenic and Vespertine. This one was really special, your face sure was mine when i heard this album, speacially Unison, that finale... I supposea you already know by the comments, but this is the "love" album around her marriage, and Vulnicura was the end of that phase on her life. Listen this after Vulnicura is painful. Specially Unison. The beauty in the craft of this album, the heavenly strings and choir, the gelid musicbox trilogy inside between this album, the "nest" made with the microbeats, all of that resumes in Unison. After Homogenic, where i think she embraces herself with her freedom, on Vespertine she founds the love that surpasses that, and that emotion was the seed of the making of this album. But it has to die eventually. A lot of possibly maybe unuseful thoughts, but that pain makes, ironically, this album even more beautiful

Vespertine has a magic. I think if she only ever made this album and nothing else, it still shows what an amazing artist she is. What she can craft is like nothing else. Again, i really enjoyed your reaction and it takes me back to how I felt when I first heard it when it came out. By that time I knew to expect something different than what came before with Björk. Unison is also my favourite track. I remember her saying it was her most self-indulgent song. Fine by me, it really gives me goosebumps. There are some nice b sides to this album including the track Verandi and Generous Palmstroke.

Your face during It's Not Up To You, Undo and Unison where all I needed LOL Björk has a secret ingredient, the song starts with electronic weirdness and her voice as if it was telling some sort of Fairy tale, but at the last chorus the choir, the strings and her vocals come all together and elevate the song to a masterpiece. I fell for it, you did and everyone else too in the Vespertine fanclub you are now a part of, congrats 🎉

I came here to watch someone else also enjoy Unison from this album after I listened to it again on my cd player next to me. It is so unbelievably heavenly and transcendent, it makes it feel like a secret song for me that I don't really get to share with anyone else and i get to enjoy it on my own. when I've put vespertine on replay, I somehow would always wake up to _THAT_ song with the beautiful chorus playing, it was almost overwhelming and I'd cry while my heart would swell up. 🥲

The drum programming surprisingly is not electronic drumming. Bjork recorded a bunch of random domestic sounds, using cards, hitting furniture, breaking ice, etc. She proceeded to up the gain levels and quantize it to a ProTools grid. She designed the sound with the laptop speakers in mind considering Napster was popular. In Hidden Place, she used reversed Guitar samples and pandiatonic harmony which is why it sounds the way it does. The laptop speakers then were mediocre, but interestingly enough I streamed this track on an older mac laptop and it was beautiful. Vespertine is my favorite Bjork album because it is probably the most advanced futuristic and innovative electronica album recorded in my opinion. Thank u for reviewing this :)

Dancer in the dark is very powerful and overwhelmingly sad, the soundtrack is great as keeps bjorks signature… Vespertine is definitely her magnum opus, although I love it, my personal favorite is “vulnicura” which I consider a dark twin of this one because it chronicles the end of this relationship, it is just as honest and personal, but maybe personally i gravitate to the sad end rather than the wonder of the beginning, they are both extraordinary though, they cemented the idea that every Bjork song is a universe

Homogenic (1997), Selmasongs (2000), & Vespertine (2001) have no skips for me. Time permitting, I can press play and enjoy every song. Hidden Place, It's Not Up To You, Undo, Unison are sublime. You don’t need to watch the film to enjoy the soundtrack. The songs on the album have a different arrangement than how they’re featured in the film. Ex: In the Musicals. Also, a pussy willow is a young catkin plant. Yes, they're called music boxes, hence Mariah Carey's iconic Diamond hit 1993 album.

Let’s gooo ! Gonna edit this comment as i watch with some Vespertine Trivia! (You’ll see Selmasongs doesn’t have the film versions of Dancer In The Dark, they are far superior, Björk wanted the soundtrack to reflect what Selma was dreaming of more than being a copycat of the film, the producers were against the idea but she fought for her work and won) Hidden Place has both a women and men choir the idea here is the meeting of a man and a woman and the start of a relationship Cocoon is my personal favourite, so intimate, if you have time i would suggest you watch the 3 videos from Vespertine, Hidden Place (video idea initially thought for I’ve seen it all on Selmasongs), Cocoon & Pagan Poetry And if anyone is into microbeats i would suggest the album « Objects for an ideal Home » by Opiate (Thomas Knack, who worked with Björk on Cocoon and Undo) Björk recorded the vocals of many songs on Vespertine with a soundfield microphone, normally used to record nature outdoor, not vocals, this enabled her to capture all the microdetailed sounds of the mouth It’s indeed a boys choir on Undo (along with a mixed adult choir in the back) it’s all real recording, and many tracks have orchestral sections, she had to write them for several years before recording all of them the same day with the full hired orchestra (It’s not up to you, Undo, Sun In, Harm of Will, Unison) For Vespertine bjork wanted to write for music boxes (the winter domestical aspect of the album) she composed all the melodies and got them adapted for music box, Pagan Poetry, Aurora, and of course Frosti have music box recordings on them. But she also made one for Cocoon (not used on the album) they are 2 versions of each, albums versions are from 15,5” copper plate discs, and the simpler instrumental versions that are on the singles (and with which she opened the shows of the Vespertine tour) are 7” adaptations. She actually got made bespoke music boxes in plexiglass (traditionally in wood) as she wanted a sound that was more « cold » and « crystalline » which had never been done before (Also Frosti is actually the name of Joga’s son (björk’s best friend) it works as both a nod to him and the idea of frost & winter) Another important element on the album is the Harp, it is predominant in Aurora and Pagan Poetry but you can find harp on half of the songs on the album, she took a long time to fine-tune the melodies and then worked with american harpist Zeena Parkins to interpret them, the bonus track Generous Palmstroke works more as a collaboration between the 2 on the composition Sun In My Mouth is played on Celesta, with the orchestra in the back (same ingredients as Harm Of Will) The text is actually a poem from american poet EE Cummings Vespertine is my all time favorite album, followed by Kid A of Radiohead in second position and Goldfrapp’s Felt Mountain in third, i recommend them !

You're goddamn right it's a 10. I haven't watched your other Björk reactions yet, since Post is her only earlier album that I think is great. This is my favorite Björk, with Utopia second (her most aggressive and primal, yet still beautiful, album), and Vulnicura, Medúlla, and Biophilia in a three-way tie for third. I'm excited that you liked the strings and harp so much, since Joanna Newsom is a harpist, and her album Ys is loaded with strings. If you want another album that features excellent orchestration, I would recommend A Moon Shaped Pool by Radiohead. You've probably already heard it, but it's my favorite work by them. If you want to hear some more idm-stylings and microbeats in pop music, check out Quarantine by Laurel Halo. Of course, not for reactions necessarily. Joanna Newsom - Ys, Ichiko Aoba - qp, Richard Dawson - Peasant, Yuki Saito - Love, and In Gowan Ring - Hazel Steps Through a Weathered Home are the only albums I could ever request you to react to in earnest with all my heart.

Matmos did a hilarious album called A Chance to Cut is a Chance to Cure, dedicated to their fathers who were both doctors. It's largely made from samples of surgery or medical tools, except for when they bump it up a little with straws blown into glasses of water for extra squelch on Lipostudio, and one deeply upsetting track made from plucking and bowing a rat cage as a protest about animal testing. They also remixed Bjork a couple of times, with very bonkers results. Olivier Alary remixed several of these tracks very beautifully as Ensemble, and as a result he and Bjork wrote Desired Constellation on the next album. It's not *that* weird to talk about Timbaland and Bjork at this point, it's just not so very obvious from the albums, but she's had more connections to rap than you'd expect - she'd remixed A Tribe Called Quest, and gotten remixes provided for her by everyone from the Beastie Boys to RZA of the Wu Tang Clan (there was even some proper Wu Tang collab but we'll never hear it.) Dobie raps on his versions of I Miss You, and Kelis sings with her on a version of Oceania from the next album. Tricky's Nearly God counts too I guess lol - and if you expand it to urban generally, Goldie, Dillinja, Dallas Austin and Photek all had a go too. And the Sugarcubes supported Public Enemy on tour!

What's so cool about this reaction is you have a in depth knowledge of different EDM generes which might have inspired some of the best programing. Vespertine is a masterpiece. REALLY sonically lush, sensitive and narrative.

PJ Harvey''s album, Is This Desire?, would be her Vespertine, I think you'll enjoy that as well then. Fiona Apple's debut Tidal has this dreamy effect, When The Pawn was a little harder. Radiohead's OK Computer as well, great production and nelodies. Before I make a nuisance of myself any further, just one last one, Róisín Murphy's first solo album after Moloko split, Ruby Blue will be a listening feast.

Tied with Joanna Newsom's Ys for my favorite album of the 2010s. Ys is probably my favorite of all time, but it's not as accessible and the late-night winter mood of Vespertine makes it an easy contender. Glad you enjoyed it.

I'm a big fan of Björk. This album is her highlight! I regret that since then she stayed in this period of micro and experimental sounds. I do like the album Volta and was at that concert in Amsterdam. It was something special. I like your reviews on albums. If i might make suggestion: Miss Kittin And The Hacker - Two [2009].

If you ever watch the music video for Pagan Poetry, you might not understand what you're seeing as the images are very vague, so I'll tell you: Björk recorded herself and her lover together in the acts of love, and then the images were highly distorted to make it more abstract. With that in mind, you can more easily figure out what's happening in the video, and it's very intimate. Not only between the two of them, but between an artist and her audience.

On to "Medulla". You're in for a strange experience, but a good one. I can't wait for you to get to "Biophilia", my favourite Bjork album. No, you don't have to listen to and watch EVERYTHING single thing that she's done to be thorough with her discography reaction reviews. Go through her discography -- her ALBUMS -- then disover those side things on your own. If you then want to do a reaction review on them, then do it, but don't feel compelled to add those to this is.

"It's weird talking about Timbaland, while we're listening to Björk." Oh man, you're in for some surprises. I mean, she has always been working with the best beatmakers like Nellee Hooper, Goldie, Tricky and even on Verspertine, with the German computer beat maker Console. But yes, there will be several Björk/Timbaland songs on a later record, so... no, it's not weird at all, actually.
