As a Gardener on my own martial arts journey, who works with an ex-spec. ops and the other an ex K1 competitor/judoka, this quote always itched me haha. Do both. That's what some monks did/do, that's what old farmers (e.g. The Fyrd) used to do. Working with the soil/nature and training in combat are two primordial duties of man. Its honestly a wonderfully calming lifestyle. Besides, I'm not using my jiujitsu when I'm holding a 6ft sharpened Dutch hoe ;-) we know how to handle our tools

BJJ is such an amazing art. Striking is indeed powerful and it's a great toolset, but honestly, becoming a great striker requires taking a fair amount of damage to your body and as pointed out in this video, our society frowns upon you using strikes. BJJ isn't everything in the realm of fighting, but it gives you a ton of latitude in real world situations.
@bane3991
@bane3991 2 жыл бұрын
@Jack Black Striking is very dangerous because any man standing with a fist is extremely dangerous. When you take them to the ground you take that danger away from them. I train both. Ideally both are preferred but grappling gives you more options to go with. I won't be trading punches with anyone on the streets though it is far too risky. They just need to connect once. If you fear someone will jump in, keep a knife on you. At that point you can legally use it for self defense because you are being attacked by multiple people. I always carry a knife around on me. I will not engage in any fist throwing with someone unless they are much smaller than me.

each action you do carries risk of injury or death you know. You only live once and time is ticking, keep that in mind. I'm a white belt who started training 3 months ago, in my 5th session I was unfortunate enough to break my rib but I suppose not everyone rolls with seasoned MMA fighters. I wont lie, you do get bruised up a bit, some days you will feel quite sore and BJJ itself is quite exhausting but its worth it. You become more confident by knowing how to defend yourself (as much as a whitebelt can) and it build your mental toughness aswell. The great thing is that you are in control of training. You can tap anytime and take a timeout in between rolls if you feel like doing so. Inquire about a free training at your local GJJ or BJJ school and see for yourself!

I find a Gracie ctc location. They don't let new white belt spar in the beginning so you won't get hurt. The 95% who aren't brawlers or were athletes in school are better of training how Gracie University teaches.

The way that NYC views self defense and what is considered the "appropriate response" to someone violently assaulting them or others is frankly absurd. I am a small female martial artist. If I am ever assaulted on the street and am able to defend myself I am not stopping until that person is dead or completely incapacitated. Especially if I am alone. Far-East Asian male perspective: -School teachers tell you not to stand up for yourself -Principals tell you not to stand up for yourself -Liberal family sitcoms traditionally tell you not to stand up for yourself -Karate teachers tell you not to stand up for yourself (generally speaking) -The Gracie Family teaches you how to stand up for yourself So, to my fellow Far-East Asian brothers, let me ask you this: Who are your real friends?

who said karate teachers tell you not to stand up for yourself?
@perfectsplit5515
@perfectsplit5515 2 жыл бұрын
@@cosmeticscameo8277 Karate teachers teach their students to “walk away” and “talk your way out of a fight”, with the only exception when an assailant physically attacks you first. (Then you are permitted to use violence) This philosophy comes indirectly from the Shaolin Monks, who had to defend their temple from bandits and thieves, but still wanted to uphold the principles of Buddhism. Additionally, modern karate is very watered down, impractical, and unrealistic. Therefore, it generally does not teach people how to fight. In public school, racist kids harass, bully, and threaten Oriental kids in many ways that do not involve direct physical violence. Therefore, Oriental teenage males who learn karate are conditioned to not stand up for themselves. When you apply the philosophical teachings of karate to the cruel racist social jungle of public school, those teachings ultimately boil down to being a doormat.

Clearly a crazy homeless person. Most homeless people are insane. Isn’t it frustrating to know that even though you did all this work to apprehend and stop this guy that he won’t spend one night in jail? He will be out the same day and won’t face any repercussions for his actions.

@@utubepunk that’s what happens in New York period. You haven’t heard of their “bail reform” law they passed a couple of years ago? The basically don’t punish people for anything (short of murder). Something like simple assault? This guy won’t spend a night in jail and probably won’t even be prosecuted by their left wing DA’s. It’s one of the main reasons a lot of major cities are being absolutely cascaded in crime.

I started doing judo because BJJ is too expensive for me now, but it's more of a sports emphasis instead of self-defense. I don't know if I will continue doing it because half the stuff I learn is useless in a real confrontation. I would learn BJJ from the online lessons but I don't have anyone to practice with. I hate not practicing how to defend yourself, you don't feel confident 😞

A couple of days ago, one of my female coworkers was sucker punched by some guy early in the morning as she was transiting from a parking garage to our office spaces. Maybe three blocks. She ended up with a fractured orbital socket. The building security saw it, sprayed a one of pepper spray in his face, good Samaritans tried to subdue him and yet he still got away. If one of them had studied BJJ, that guy might be off the streets.

I think this would be a wonderful opportunity to pause for a moment and give thanks for the great contributions of the Black community to our society. Their peaceful and generous nature makes them ideal neighbors, lending testimony to their exceptional family values and parenting skills unrivaled by any other culture. Their commitment to academic excellence enriches our schools and serves as an example to all who hope to achieve prominence as a people. Real estate values are fueled by the mix of African Americans into an area due to their caring and respectful nature in these communities, an example of all they have achieved through their enthusiasm for self- improvement by hard work and a self-reliant can-do nature. Without their industrious and creative drive, we would be poorer as a nation.
